Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along has given a strong warning to the fundamentalist leaders of Bangladesh who are talking about cutting India’s strategically important Chicken Neck (Siliguri Corridor). He said that the people of the tribal community of the North-East are experts in the art of throat cutting. This warning has come at a time when some radical elements in Bangladesh are heating up politics over this sensitive corridor connecting the North-East of India with the country.

Giving an open challenge to the fundamentalist elements of Bangladesh, Temjen mentioned the Mahabharata characters Ghatotkacha and Hidimba. According to Mahabharata, Ghatotkacha and Hidimba belonged to the North-East. Hidimba, who was the wife of Bhima and mother of Ghatotkacha, belonged to the Dimasa tribe of Assam and Nagaland.

Giving a frank statement, Temgen Imna Along said that any attempt to weaken the territorial integrity of India will prove to be a big mistake. They have not seen our strength. Whatever the people of Bangladesh are saying, we do not condemn it so much, let them come and see in the North-East, we know what their intention is. If those people think that there is no chicken neck or no neck, then they are wrong. We are connected to India by a strong link. We are Indians.

Nagaland minister’s stern warning

He said, ‘We do not want to say that all Bangladeshis are wrong, some crazy people talk like this. If they have not seen Ghatotkacha and Hidimba, they are welcome. We will show them what we are capable of. They should forget that it was not India that liberated them and if they have forgotten so soon, then many things can happen. As far as slitting the throat is concerned, he doesn’t know any better than us.

Sadhguru, founder of Isha Foundation, has spoken on a very sensitive issue related to India’s strategic security and sovereignty. During the satsang organized at Sadhguru Sannidhi in Bengaluru, when he was asked a question on the comments made by the interim government of Bangladesh regarding the Siliguri Corridor, he termed it as a ’78 year old anomaly’, a result of the partition of India.

‘India lost the opportunity created in 1971’

Sadhguru said that the Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the ‘Chicken Neck’, is a very narrow stretch of land connecting the north-eastern states of India with the rest of the country. This situation was created at the time of partition of 1947. He said that even though India may not have had the right or circumstances to improve it in 1946-47, but after the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, India had full opportunity and right, which was lost.

Sadhguru said in symbolic language that the foundation of any country cannot rest on weakness. He said, ‘The nation cannot run only as a ‘chicken’, it has to become an ‘elephant’. For this, if nutrition is needed, strength is needed, or any other concrete steps have to be taken, then that will have to be done. Every step has a cost, but the security of the nation is bigger than that.

‘This thinking is not practical in the current global situation’

He also said that in an ideal situation the world could be without borders and countries, but in the current global situation this thinking is not practical. It would be nice if the world had no borders, but we are not at that level yet. To suddenly assume that everything will be fine is an impractical thought.

‘The neck of an elephant is easy to handle’

Sadhguru reiterated that this discrepancy is only 78 years old and correction is still possible. Saying, ‘The neck of an elephant is easy to handle,’ he clarified that strengthening the Siliguri Corridor is the need of the hour.

It is noteworthy that Sadhguru has earlier also expressed concern about the violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, destruction of temples and demographic pressure.

India has considered the recent contacts between military officials of Bangladesh and Pakistan as a serious strategic signal. For this reason, the Army has taken major steps to strengthen the security of the Siliguri Corridor, which is called the lifeline of North-East India. According to intelligence sources, three new military stations (garrisons) have been established near the Bangladesh border at Bamuni in Assam, Kishanganj in Bihar and Chopra in West Bengal. This area is extremely sensitive because in difficult situations, these bases will provide fast and flexible response capability to the Army and BSF.

Siliguri Corridor is also called ‘Chicken Neck’, because its width is only 22 kilometers at some places. This route connects the 8 states of the North-East with the rest of the country. Any kind of blockage here can cut off the entire North-East from the mainland, which will stop military supplies and trade worth billions can come to a standstill. A senior army officer says that this is not a weakness of India but a strength because we are deployed in this area from three directions.

Why increased concern?

According to the report of The Hindu, security agencies believe that in any unexpected tension, anti-India forces can target this corridor. Especially India is watching very seriously the new political environment created after the departure of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. Recently, Acting Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus met Pakistan’s General Sahir Shamshad Mirza in Dhaka, in which military cooperation was discussed. India is seeing this not just as a formal meeting but as a sign of changing regional equations.

Why was security increased?

Along with the new garrison, surveillance networks, fencing, drone monitoring, digital watch towers and rapid reaction forces are also being strengthened. Especially Kishanganj is considered very important, because it is just 23 kilometers away from the Bangladesh border. Many central leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah have visited this area and have clearly said that there can be no compromise on the security of this corridor.

The new deployment and surveillance make it clear that India is pursuing a zero-risk policy on national security and territorial integrity. Amidst the changing geopolitical situation, India’s message is clear that no one can play with the security of the North-East.

India’s decision to deploy S-400 and Rafale fighter jet in Siliguri Corridor is not just a strategic maneuver but it is a strategic announcement. New Delhi is drawing a red line in the region affected by alliances, pseudo -maneuvers and technical war. India will respond to any adventure from the north or from the east with full force regarding the safety of this corridor.
