The High Commission of Singapore in India on Monday congratulated Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. The BJP led NDA alliance has got a landslide victory in the assembly elections held in Assam.

What did the High Commissioner of Singapore say?

Singapore’s High Commissioner to India Simon Wong, in a post on social media platform X, wished Sarma and reiterated Singapore’s commitment to support the development of Assam. Describing Singapore as a trusted friend of Assam, Wong said the island nation is ready to further strengthen cooperation with the north-eastern state in many areas.

The High Commissioner said in a post on Twitter, ‘Many congratulations to our dear friend Himanta Biswa Sarma. Your new tenure as Chief Minister will definitely take Assam to new heights. As your trusted friend, we will stand with Assam as always.

Sarma took oath as Chief Minister

The BJP-led NDA won a significant victory in the Assam assembly elections. This cleared the way for Sarma to continue as Chief Minister for another term. Sarma took oath as Chief Minister in the presence of several senior BJP and NDA leaders in Guwahati on Monday (May 12).

Assam-Singapore increased cooperation in many areas

In the last few years, Assam and Singapore have significantly increased cooperation in areas like industrial investment, technology, infrastructure and skill development. Singapore has emerged as one of the state’s key international partners under India’s Act East Policy. Starting in 2026, Assam-Singapore relations have increasingly focused on economic partnership, green energy initiatives, semiconductor manufacturing and urban planning cooperation. Many of these initiatives have been included in the state’s Advantage Assam 2.0 programme, which aims to attract global investment and promote industrial development in the region.

The Assam government is also involving Singapore companies for the development of semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the Electronic City Project of Jagiroad. In January 2026, Sarma also met Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during the World Economic Forum to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Assam and Singapore. An MoU for industrial and investment cooperation was also signed. Its objective is to increase employment opportunities for skilled workers in Singapore.
