Smart Prepaid Meter: Are you trying to link your mobile number to your prepaid meter? Under the ‘Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme’ (RDSS), officials are working to install smart prepaid electricity meters in different states across the country.

One of the most common problems people face is linking their prepaid meter. Earlier, for this a person had to go to the electricity office, but now this work can be done sitting at home in a jiffy. This is possible through both offline and online methods.

Why is it necessary to link mobile number?

Linking the smart prepaid meter to the mobile number is important because it acts as a form of communication between the electricity department and you. If the number is not linked, you will not know how much balance is left in your meter. In such a situation, there is a fear of power cut.

Due to linking of mobile number, whenever your balance decreases, you will be sent an alert through SMS so that you can recharge on time. Apart from this, in many states like Bihar-Jharkhand, electricity bill is now being sent directly on WhatsApp. Another advantage of linking the mobile number is that if the meter reader does not come home, then you get the correct information about consumption and bill on the number itself.

How to update online

• First of all download the official app of electricity department like Bihar Bijli Smart Meter or UPPCL Online from Play Store.
• After this, log in to the account using your customer ID.
• Now go to Profile Settings or Manage Account section.
• Edit and update the mobile number present there.
• If asked, enter the OTP received on the new number.
• After following these steps, your number will be linked to the prepaid meter.
• Note, some steps may be different in different apps. However, you will get the option to update your number in your profile only.

From the portal of electricity department

• You go to the website of your state electricity board.
• Consumer Login.
• Go to Manage Profile and select Change Mobile Number option and complete the process.

You can also update your number by calling the helpline number of the electricity department like 1912. For this you may have to tell your old number and meter number.

offline method

You go to your nearest electricity office (Sub-division Office) and submit a copy of your identity proof like Aadhaar card along with a copy of the electricity bill along with an application.
