Now water is sprinkled from time to time to keep this mixture slightly moist. Experts say that it is appropriate to keep the size of the pit about 2 meters long, one meter wide and about 1 foot deep. Raw cow dung is first cooled by adding water and left for 24 hours. After this earthworms are added to it.

In how many days is the compost ready?

After completing this entire process, vermicompost is ready in about 60 to 65 days. In some cases, given proper care and right environment, it can be ready even in 50 days. When the garbage completely decomposes and turns into black granular manure, it is considered ready for use. While making vermi compost, it is important to take special care of temperature and moisture. The ideal temperature for earthworms is between 5 degrees Celsius and 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. In case of excessive heat, it is very important to cover the pit with jute sacks or grass and sprinkle light water. At the same time, the moisture level should also be kept balanced, because excess water can cause harm to earthworms.

Why is it important to protect from fresh dung?

According to experts, fresh cow dung should not be used while making vermi compost. The gas produced in it and the high temperature are harmful for earthworms. Therefore, cow dung and other organic waste should be left to rot for the first few days, so that the temperature becomes normal and the right environment can be created for earthworms.
