Somnath Amrit Mahotsav 2026: Somnath Temple is also one of the ancient and major centers of faith in India. Today, on Monday, May 11, the temple is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its modern reconstruction and inauguration. Preparations for Sommath Amrit Mahotsav organized in Gujarat are in full swing.

Somnath Temple is the first Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Hinduism, which is located in Prabhas Patan of Saurashtra region (Veraval port) of Gujarat. Religious belief is that Chandradev had performed penance here to get rid of the curse of King Daksh and it was here that Lord Shiva first appeared in the form of a pillar of fire. Therefore, Somnath Jyotirlinga is a symbol of the infinite and indestructible form of Lord Shiva.

Preparation for Somnath Amrit Mahotsav

• Preparations for Amrit Mahotsav are going on in Somnath temple. Religious and cultural events will be organized in the temple premises.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform special puja and Kumbhabhishek in the temple. He will also address the public meeting.
• To make the program of Somnath Amrit Mahotsav grand, the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team of the Indian Air Force will perform an air show. Besides, flowers will also be showered from the helicopter.

The story of creation from the destruction of Somnath temple

Modi said- Just as repeated conspiracies and attempts were made to destroy Somnath, in the same way foreign invaders tried to destroy India for centuries. Still, neither Somnath nor India was destroyed.

The history of Somnath Temple is a glorious symbol of destruction and reconstruction. After independence, the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel pledged to rebuild the Somnath temple.

Then on May 11, 1951, India’s first President Rajendra Prasad participated in the re-inauguration ceremony of the temple. In memory of this historical moment, the 75th anniversary is being celebrated today on 11 May 2026.
