After this you will stop receiving such calls and messages.

You can block calls coming from telemarketing companies by following some easy steps. Apart from this, you can also block messages. For this you will first have to go to the website of your service provider. Here go to the DND section and enter your number. Fill the OTP received on this and block promotional calls and messages. If you are a Jio user then you can do this work through the app also.

How to block through SMS

If you do not want to activate DND through website or app, then SMS is also a way. For this, write START 0 and send message to 1909 from your registered mobile number. Even after this, if you receive any spam or marketing call, then send the message by writing UCC, caller, date/month. Instead of caller, write the number from which you have received the call.

You can also block through phone

If you find it a hassle to block spam calls through website or SMS, then you can do this work by just making phone calls. For this you have to call number 1909. Follow the instructions given on the call and within some time DND will be activated on your number, after which spam calls and messages will stop.

What will change after this meeting?

Now bank calls will come only from the number “1600” – TRAI has decided that now banks, finance and insurance companies will call only from numbers starting with 1600. Earlier this series was limited to some banks, rest of the companies used to call from old 140 or mobile number. Thugs used to take advantage of this. Now it has been decided to bring everyone into this series. Meaning, if no call is coming from “1600” then understand that he is not a bank person but a fraudster.

Links sent in SMS will now be pre-verified. Companies will now have to whitelist their URLs, app links, OTT links and callback numbers with TRAI in advance. This will expose fake websites or apps like “click and get rewards”.

Blacklist will also be public- TRAI and telecom companies will now release the list of those companies which have been caught in spamming or fraud. That means the names of the thugs will now be visible directly on the website.

OTP system will be more secure- TRAI is now implementing security features like captcha and real-time verification so that it is not easy to steal someone’s account or data.

TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti says that maintaining trust in the digital world is most important. The steps taken today will strengthen both the security and transparency of users.

That means now is the time to say goodbye to fake calls. Soon, when you get a call from “1600” on your phone, understand that it is from the bank and not from some fraudster.

In view of the growing cyber fraud and telecom scams in the country, Airtel has once again sent a proposal to the Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (VI) to come together. The company wants all the telecom service providers to start a joint fraud protection initiative, so that such cases can be detected and blocked immediately through real-time intelligence sharing and cross-network coordination. Airtel has also informed the Ministry of Telecommunications and TRAI about this.

It is reported here that the company wants to create a strong and secure structure, which can curb the telecom fraud. The company also shared data in a separate letter, stating that in the first 9 months of 2024, more than 17 lakh cybercrime complaints were filed in the country, which caused a loss of more than Rs 11,000 crore. The company has clearly stated that if the industry is not united, it will be difficult to protect the common user from scammers.

Airtel is already using an AI-based system to block scamming links on social and OTT platforms like Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook and Instagram. But the company says that now scamming methods have become even more sharp, especially through fishing links and fake websites.

The report states that Airtel sent a proposal to the rest of the telecom companies on 14 May 2025, stating that all together launch “Joint Telecom Fraud Initiative”. With this, all the networks will be able to track the fraud together and the same security layer users will get.

This is not the first time Airtel has sought such a colonies. In October 2024, the company also sent a letter to all telecom companies to share the corporate connection data used for commercial calling in a standard format, so that spam calls could be blocked in advance. It also suggested to create a central platform like DLT.

According to the report, Airtel’s Vice Chairman and MD Gopal Vittal is also going to send a personal email to customers in the coming days in which they will give information about the changing methods of the scam and the protection masters taken by Airtel. He says that today scammers are targeting users not just from calls or SMS, but also through chat, email, social media and apps.

The Department of Telecommunication (DOT) has discontinued more than 1.75 lakh direct inward calling (DID) and landline numbers. These numbers were found to be involved in unauthorized promotional and illegal activities. This action is part of the continuous running campaign of DOT against spam calls and cyber fraud. In addition, DOT has strictly instructed the telecom companies (TSPS) to strictly follow the unified license rules. Companies have been instructed to ensure regular audit of Pris, Lease Lines, SIP Trunks and IPLC and ensure only valid use of them.
