Now the news is that the Election Commission has sent summons to Shami and his younger brother Mohammad Kaif. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued notices to both the brothers for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing. Actually, the Election Commission has noticed some discrepancies in the census forms of Shami and Kaif. This process started from 16 December.

Mohammed Shami plays for Bengal in domestic cricket, but he is originally from Uttar Pradesh, but has been living in Kolkata for a long time. Shami and his brother were ordered to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer on January 5, but due to the Vijay Hazare Trophy schedule, they will not be able to attend the SIR related hearing on January 5.

Shami had written a letter to the ECI regarding his prior commitments, after which his hearing date has been postponed to January 9-11. By then, Bengal’s group matches will have ended, while the quarterfinal matches will start from January 12.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami and his brother Mohammed Kaif are voters of Ward No. 93 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which comes under Rash Behari Assembly constituency. This matter is said to be related to technical flaws in progeny and self-mapping.

Mohammed Shami is continuously performing well in Indian domestic cricket. Has taken 11 wickets in 5 matches for Bengal in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. Before this, he had also performed strongly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Despite this, he has not got a place in the Indian squad for the New Zealand ODI series.

The Special Intensive Verification (SIR) process of voter list, which was going on since November 4 in Uttar Pradesh, ended on December 26. According to the data released by the Election Commission, out of 15.44 crore voters, the names of 2.89 crore voters are set to be deleted. In this process, shocking figures came from big cities where maximum votes were cast. A record number of more than 12 lakh names were removed in the capital Lucknow. Apart from this, the number of votes being deducted from many cities is in lakhs.

According to the Election Commission, now the draft voter list will be released on December 31, after which those whose names have been removed or have any claims and objections will be accepted till January 30, 2026. After this, the final voter list will be released on 28th February. Those whose names have been deleted will have to provide relevant documents. After that their name will be added to the voter list.

Names cut due to this reason

According to the Election Commission, the impact of name deletion has been found to be greater in cities. In this process, names of lakhs of voters have been deleted due to migration, duplicate and missing voters. The voters who have permanently transferred or migrated are the highest. Their number is more than one crore, while the number of deaths and duplicate and missing voters is also in lakhs.

Major districts where most names were cut

• More than 12 lakh votes were cast in Lucknow
• 11 lakh 56 thousand 339 votes were lost in Prayagraj
• More than nine lakh votes were cast in Kanpur
• 8 lakh 36 thousand 965 votes were lost in Agra
• 8 lakh 18 thousand 325 votes have been deducted in Ghaziabad.
• 7 lakh 14 thousand 768 votes were lost in Bareilly
• In Meerut, 6 lakh 65 thousand 647 votes were lost in the first round of SIR.
• 5 lakh 89 thousand 546 votes were cut in Jaunpur
• 5 lakh 73 thousand 217 votes were lost in Varanasi
• 6,45,634 votes were lost in Gorakhpur.
• 4,47,479 votes were lost in SIR in Gautam Buddha Nagar.

It is clear from the district wise data that SIR has had the biggest impact on the voters of urban areas. Accordingly, there were more than 40 lakh voters in the capital Lucknow. In which now 12 lakhs have been deducted. While Prayagraj stood second and Kanpur stood third.

Objections can be filed after the draft list

The Election Commission has now advised to register objections after the release of the draft list. According to the Commission, the objective of this process is to make the voter list completely error free. Therefore, the documents asked for should be provided to the concerned BLO before the last date.

More than 18 lakh voters in Noida

A total of 18 lakh 65 thousand 673 voters are registered in the district, out of which a large number of voters have been digitized, mapped and verified, while lakhs of voters have been found in no mapping and ASD (Absent, Shifted, Duplicate) category.

According to the report, detailed analysis of voter data has been done in three assembly seats of the district, 61 Noida, 62 Dadri and 63 Jewar. There are a total of 7,71,082 voters in Noida Assembly constituency, out of which electoral forms of 5,61,764 voters (72.85 percent) have been digitized. Whereas in Dadri seat, digitalization of 5,62,435 (77.38 percent) out of total 7,26,828 voters and 2,93,470 (79.8 percent) out of 3,67,763 voters in Jewar has been completed.

9.81% voters in no mapping

Talking about the mapping status, a total of 12,33,316 voters (66.11 percent) have been mapped in the district. On the contrary, more than 1,83,067 voters (about 9.81 percent) have been found who are included in the no mapping category. In Noida assembly constituency alone, 59,139 voters, 1,01,877 in Dadri and 22,051 voters in Jewar have been registered in the no mapping category. The district administration is now going to take strict steps regarding these voters.

It has been clarified by the administration that notices will be sent to more than 1 lakh 80 thousand voters included in the no mapping category. These voters will have to submit documents related to their eligibility and identity. For this, the time has been fixed from 31 December 2025 to 30 January 2026. Apart from this, a large number of voters in the district have also been found in the ASD category.

According to the report, a total of 4 lakh 48 thousand 15 voters in Gautam Buddha Nagar, i.e. about 24.01 percent, are registered in the ASD category. These include 2,09,320 voters in Noida, 1,64,395 in Dadri and 74,300 in Jewar. According to administrative sources, names of about 4 lakh 40 thousand voters have been removed from the list under the SIR process. Such voters will not be included in the final voter list to be published on December 31, 2025, unless they complete the verification by submitting the necessary documents within the stipulated time.

Draft voter list will be released in Rajasthan today on 16th December under Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Under this process of the Election Commission, notices will be issued to 16.46 lakh voters out of 5.48 crore voters.

Necessary documents will be asked from these voters. The Election Commission says that this is being done with the aim of making the voter list more transparent, pure and updated, so that any kind of error or dispute can be avoided in the upcoming elections.

Don’t panic after getting notice- State Election Officer

Under the draft voter list and notice process, 16.46 lakh voters to whom notices will be sent will have to submit the necessary documents within the stipulated time. The state election officer has clarified that there is no need to panic after receiving the notice. If the documents are found correct, no voter’s name will be removed from the list. If any voter’s name is not included in the draft voter list, then he can get his name added by applying as per the prescribed procedure.

Regarding appeal and opportunity for improvement, the Election Commission has assured that voters will be given adequate opportunities. If anyone has any objection to the draft list or wants to make corrections in name, address or other details, an appeal can be made at the prescribed stages. As part of the availability of the draft list and the role of political parties, the draft voter list of 61,136 polling stations in the state will also be shared with the political parties. How long did the SIR process extend in UP?

This step of extending the deadline for special intensive revision of the voter list has been taken by the Election Commission on the request of the concerned Chief Electoral Officers. The SIR period for Uttar Pradesh has been extended till 26 December and the draft voter list will be published on 31 December.

In which states has the SIR deadline been extended?

Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has issued a revised schedule for SIR in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The period of counting forms for these 6 states and Union Territory was to end on Thursday (December 11) and the draft of the voter list was to be published on December 16, but now the extension of the deadline has brought relief to those who were left out in the process.

But the biggest question being raised on social media is whether this campaign will affect cases like Seema Haider also? Will she be forced to leave Noida?

Seema Ghulam Haider is a woman resident of Karachi, Pakistan. She got married to Ghulam Haider in 2014. In the year 2023, while playing PUBG game, he met and then befriended Sachin Meena of Noida. It is said that both of them met in Nepal, got married in the temple and after that Seema came to India from Nepal border with her four children.

Both were detained during their stay in Noida. A case of illegal entry into India and fake identity was registered at the border, but later he got bail. During this time, the border issue came into national headlines.

Can SIR impact campaign limits?

The biggest question is, what is the relation of this big investigation of voter list to Seema Haider’s case? The simple answer is, it has no direct impact on Seema Haider.

SIR only works to update the voter list. This campaign is not at all related to making anyone vacate their house, leave the city or send them somewhere else. Nor is this campaign like a police investigation or citizenship investigation by central agencies. Under this, it is only seen that there are no wrong or duplicate entries in the voter list.

Seema Haider herself is already appearing in the court in the illegal entry case and is on bail. Therefore SIR does not have any impact on their whereabouts, location or place of residence.

Seema’s case is a matter of giving life – lawyer AP Singh

According to the report of Dainik Bhaskar, Seema’s lawyer AP Singh has claimed that Seema’s case is completely different from the voter list. He says that Seema’s issue is about life donation, not about voter list. This issue is related to humanitarian grounds and comes under the mercy petition pending before the President. Pakistan is not cooperating in the verification of documents, but this will not make any difference to the case.

He says that Seema is neither a spy nor a terrorist, but has come to India because of love. AP Singh even said that if Seema is proved to be a terrorist then she should be hanged double.

Action can be taken in such a situation

If Seema Haider has ever applied for Voter ID or any Indian identity document. In that situation the SIR team can raise questions. But no such official record has come to light yet. Seema Haider had sent a mercy petition to the President for Indian citizenship in July 2023. This petition is still pending.

That is why lawyer AP Singh claims that the final decision will come from Rashtrapati Bhavan and not from any voter list campaign. Both SIR and limit case processes are completely separate and do not conflict with each other.

Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Saturday (November 29) accused the Election Commission of creating fear and doubt among voters during the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list. He alleged that undue pressure on field staff and rushed deadlines indicate that there is something wrong with the process.

Speaking to the media in Jaipur, Pilot said that although SIR has been conducted many times in the past, it has never generated public concern like this year.

He further said, “SIR has been conducted many times before in this country, but there was never any discussion or doubt in the minds of people.” He reiterated that for the first time the attitude of the Election Commission has created concern among the citizens.

‘Officials involved in the SIR process are under immense pressure’

Congress leader Sachin Pilot alleged, “Names have been removed in Bihar and the officers involved in the current process are under immense pressure.” In many states, people are under stress and some are even committing suicide due to the pressure. He alleged that this is a clear sign that something is going wrong.

‘EC should work as an independent institution’

The former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan also said, “The Election Commission should work as an independent institution. Revision of voter list is the work of the Commission, not of any political party. Congress is running a nationwide campaign to ensure that no vulnerable citizen loses his or her franchise.

Action taken under political pressure is unacceptable-Pilot

He stressed that we want to ensure that the poor, Dalits, tribals and the elderly are not deprived of their constitutional franchise due to lack of awareness or someone’s intention to remove their names. He warned that any action taken under political pressure would be unacceptable. Pilot said, “The Election Commission should work impartially. If he works under the pressure of any ideology, government or leader, it will not be acceptable to the public or the Congress.

The objective of this campaign is to make the voter list of the state more accurate, transparent and updated. The Election Commission of India has started this program across the country, in which the campaign will run in 12 states and union territories including Rajasthan. This campaign will run till 7 February 2026 and the final voter list will be published on the same day.

More than 52 thousand BLOs in the field

52,469 booth level officers have been deployed for this campaign in the state. These officers will go door-to-door and collect information about voters. According to the current voter list of the state, 5 crore 48 lakh 84 thousand 827 voters are registered.

Of these, about 2.61 crore voters are above 40 years of age, whose mapping has been completed to the extent of 77 percent. At the same time, 2.88 crore voters are below 40 years of age, whose work is still going on.

How long will the campaign last?

In Rajasthan, from November 4 to December 4, 2025, BLOs will go door-to-door and distribute and collect enumeration forms. After this, the draft voter list will be published on 9 December 2025. Claims and objections will be taken from 9 December 2025 to 8 January 2026, that is, during this time any citizen can apply to add or make corrections in his/her name.

Hearing and verification work will take place from 9 December to 31 January 2026. And finally the final voter list will be released on 7 February 2026.

What is SIR campaign and why is it important?

SIR i.e. Special Intensive Revision means special intensive revision of the voter list. Under this campaign, voters’ information is updated so that no eligible voter is left out and names of deceased or transferred people are removed from the list.

This time in Rajasthan, the State Election Commission has made complete preparations. BLO i.e. Booth Level Officer will go door-to-door and distribute the Enumeration Form and get it filled.

This time the Election Commission has made the calculation form very easy. Now this will be a single page form in which some basic information of the voter will be pre-filled. Such as name, EPIC number (Voter ID number), address, part and serial number, and even the photo of the voter will be pre-printed.

The voter will have to fill only some information. Date of birth, Aadhaar number (optional), name of father, mother or guardian, mobile number and a passport size color photograph will have to be pasted.

Created help desk system

For the convenience of the voters, the Election Commission has also created a volunteer and help desk system so that no one faces any problem in filling the information or form. Also, voter list and related information can also be seen on the website of Election Commission of India voters.eci.gov.in or the website of Chief Electoral Officer of Rajasthan election.rajasthan.gov.in.

MK Stalin on SIR: Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Special Intensive Revision process.

The move comes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) last week issued orders for the next phase of SIR of voter lists in 12 states and union territories, which will cover a total of 51 crore voters.

Nomination work will start from November 4

The nomination process for this phase will begin from November 4 and the final voter list will be published on February 7, 2026, with January 1, 2026, as the base date. Assembly elections are to be held in the five states/union territories next year in April-May 2026. West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are included in the list of 12 states where the SIR process will run in the next three months. However, Assam, which is one of the election states, is not included in this list.

CM M.K. Stalin accused ECI of conspiracy

On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin accused the Election Commission (ECI) of a conspiracy and said the SIR was a malicious attempt aimed at removing opposition voters.

Stalin said, “To stop this undemocratic step, we called an all-party meeting and passed a resolution condemning the SIR. The complete revision of the voter list by the Election Commission a few months before the elections is a deliberate strategy to remove legitimate voters.”

Big allegation made giving example of Bihar

CM Stalin alleged that a similar process was adopted in Bihar also, where lakhs of genuine voters were removed from the list. He said that the first opposition to this controversial process started from Tamil Nadu, after which Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and opposition leaders of Bihar also opposed it. Stalin said, “Even after the legal case was registered, the Election Commission did not give any satisfactory answer”.

AIADMK and BJP also targeted

Stalin met AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. He also made a scathing attack on Palaniswami and said that he was playing a double game and was afraid of the Election Commission because of his links with BJP. He further said that migrant laborers from Bihar have got respect and employment in Tamil Nadu, but the Prime Minister is “doing political drama for electoral gains in Bihar.”
