Why was SpiceJet fined?
According to the report of Indian Express, this matter is two years old. When an old Kashmiri couple was returning from Haj pilgrimage, they had a flight from Delhi to Srinagar. He also had valid boarding passes but still the airlines did not allow him to board the flight. Because of which the couple had to pay extra money and travel by next day’s flight. Due to this, he faced difficulty in traveling, cost more money and also caused mental stress.

What was the complaint?
According to the complaint, the couple was returning from Delhi to Srinagar on July 8, 2024 after completing Haj pilgrimage. His son had booked a SpiceJet flight, which was scheduled to take off from Delhi at 6:45 pm and reach Srinagar at 8:20 pm. The couple says that they reached the airport much before time. He checked in, deposited the luggage and also took the boarding pass. But when it was time to board the flight, the airline staff stopped him from boarding the plane. No reason was given despite him having a valid boarding pass.

Not only this, Ghulam Nabi Fafu also alleged that other passengers were made to board the flight in his place. The airline canceled his boarding passes. His checked-in luggage was also returned after several hours. By then all the other flights going to Srinagar that day had left. Therefore he had to stay in Delhi the whole night. The next day, he was forced to book an Indigo flight for Rs 13,450, which was much more expensive than the earlier ticket.

10 thousand tickets, 52 thousand fine
After which the matter went to the Consumer Commission where the bench held that there was a serious deficiency in the service of SpiceJet and it behaved unfairly with the passengers. The commission said that due to the negligence of the airline, the couple had to suffer mental stress, distress and financial loss. Therefore, the airline was ordered to return the ticket amount as well as pay a compensation of Rs 52,000.

Let us tell you that the decision on the matter came after almost two years, on June 9, 2026, the Consumer Commission ordered the airline to refund the ticket of Rs 10,078 to Ghulam Nabi Fafu and his wife Raza Begum. Apart from this, also give him a compensation of Rs 52,000.

There are approximately 1,500 flight movements daily at Delhi Airport. Under normal conditions, 60-70 flights take off and land per hour. In FY25, the PLF was 88.8 percent against the last year’s 87.7 percent, while Rask FY24 increased from Rs 6.04 to 9.3 % to 6.60.

SpiceJet’s Promoter Group also completed an equity investment of 500 crores including the final installment of 294.09 crore in Q4Fy25. The company is continuously increasing the scope of its network. SpiceJet also started 24 domestic flights in the fourth quarter of FY 25 and added Tuticorin, Porbandar and Dehradun to their destination list. On Friday, SpiceJet’s shares on BSE closed at Rs 43.81 with a decline of 1.95 percent.
