SpiceJet fined: The name of SpiceJet Airlines has become much discussed these days. Consumer Commission of Srinagar has imposed a fine of about Rs 62 thousand on SpiceJet. That too because of a couple returning from Haj pilgrimage. Now the airlines will have to pay a fine to this couple along with the ticket money. But why is this so? Let us tell.

Why was SpiceJet fined?
According to the report of Indian Express, this matter is two years old. When an old Kashmiri couple was returning from Haj pilgrimage, they had a flight from Delhi to Srinagar. He also had valid boarding passes but still the airlines did not allow him to board the flight. Because of which the couple had to pay extra money and travel by next day’s flight. Due to this, he faced difficulty in traveling, cost more money and also caused mental stress.

Also read: Fuel Shortage: India and America are fighting over cheap Russian oil, there is a huge shortage there, how will petrol and diesel become cheaper now?

What was the complaint?
According to the complaint, the couple was returning from Delhi to Srinagar on July 8, 2024 after completing Haj pilgrimage. His son had booked a SpiceJet flight, which was scheduled to take off from Delhi at 6:45 pm and reach Srinagar at 8:20 pm. The couple says that they reached the airport much before time. He checked in, deposited the luggage and also took the boarding pass. But when it was time to board the flight, the airline staff stopped him from boarding the plane. No reason was given despite him having a valid boarding pass.

Not only this, Ghulam Nabi Fafu also alleged that other passengers were made to board the flight in his place. The airline canceled his boarding passes. His checked-in luggage was also returned after several hours. By then all the other flights going to Srinagar that day had left. Therefore he had to stay in Delhi the whole night. The next day, he was forced to book an Indigo flight for Rs 13,450, which was much more expensive than the earlier ticket.

10 thousand tickets, 52 thousand fine
After which the matter went to the Consumer Commission where the bench held that there was a serious deficiency in the service of SpiceJet and it behaved unfairly with the passengers. The commission said that due to the negligence of the airline, the couple had to suffer mental stress, distress and financial loss. Therefore, the airline was ordered to return the ticket amount as well as pay a compensation of Rs 52,000.

Let us tell you that the decision on the matter came after almost two years, on June 9, 2026, the Consumer Commission ordered the airline to refund the ticket of Rs 10,078 to Ghulam Nabi Fafu and his wife Raza Begum. Apart from this, also give him a compensation of Rs 52,000.

ATF Tax Relief: India’s two largest aviation hubs Delhi and Mumbai have made a major reduction in VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel i.e. ATF. This decision is expected to provide relief to airlines from rising costs, especially at a time when global fuel prices, weak rupee and operational expenses are rising rapidly.

How much tax reduced in Delhi and Mumbai?

If we talk about tax, Delhi has reduced VAT on ATF from 25 percent to 7 percent. This relief has been implemented for six months. Whereas Maharashtra has reduced VAT on ATF for domestic flights in Mumbai from 18 percent to 7 percent. This decision has come at a time when airlines were struggling with rising fuel prices and had warned the government about increasing costs.

AITWA’s big decision: FAF implemented in freight rates, freight will increase if diesel becomes expensive

Fuel crisis increases the difficulties of airlines

The aviation sector is currently facing a huge fuel crisis. The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), which includes companies like Air India, Indigo and SpiceJet, had warned the government that many routes were becoming economically unprofitable due to rising fuel costs. According to FIA, earlier fuel cost used to be about 30 to 40 percent of the total expenses of airlines, but now it has increased to 55 to 60 percent.

impact of global stress

The impact of ongoing tensions in the Middle East and supply disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz was also visible on jet fuel prices. A large part of the oil and LNG supply around the world passes through this route. While at the end of February 2026, the price of jet fuel was around $99 per barrel, by May 2026 it increased to around $263 per barrel.

Why are Delhi and Mumbai so important?

According to figures disclosed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport handled around 8 crore passengers in 2024-25, while Mumbai Airport handled 5.55 crore passengers in 2025 and recorded a movement of more than 3,31,000 aircraft. Most of the domestic and international flights in the country operate from these two cities. This is the reason why the effect of reduction in tax on fuel will be visible on the entire aviation sector.

Increasing consumption of ATF

The demand for ATF is continuously increasing in India. According to government data, about 764 thousand metric tons of ATF was consumed in the country in February 2026. Whereas in 2025, domestic airlines will carry about 167 million passengers. Amidst such huge demand, even a little relief in fuel prices can prove to be a big saving for airlines.

Gold loan craze is increasing amid rising gold prices, know which state is on top?

Increasing financial pressure on airlines

Airlines are already facing many financial challenges. Increasing lease rentals, shortage of aircraft, technical problems in engines, maintenance expenses and weakness of rupee against the dollar have increased the problems of the companies. Its effect is also visible on the performance of companies. Air India has stopped some international flights like Chicago, Newark and Shanghai, while the number of flights on many routes has been reduced. On the other hand, IndiGo’s net profit fell by about 77.6 percent in the third quarter of FY 2026.

There may be a reduction in fuel tankering

The reduction in ATF tax may also impact the fuel strategy of airlines. Till now many airlines adopted fuel tankering strategy. That is, she used to get more fuel filled at low tax airports so that she does not have to take fuel again at expensive airports. However, this increased the weight of the aircraft and affected the fuel efficiency. Experts believe that due to lower taxes in Delhi and Mumbai, the need for such strategies will reduce.

Will air tickets be cheaper?

There is less possibility of passengers getting cheap tickets immediately after the tax cut. Fares in Aviation Sector: Fares in the sector are not determined only by cost, but demand and supply also play a big role in it. At present, passenger demand remains strong, while flight capacity is limited due to shortage of aircraft and technical problems. In such a situation, airlines will first try to reduce their financial pressure.

States will suffer revenue loss

This decision will also cause loss of revenue to the state governments. Delhi government estimates that it may suffer a loss of around Rs 985 crore due to VAT cut. Maharashtra is expected to suffer a revenue loss of Rs 550 to 600 crore annually. After this, both the governments believe that this step will help in maintaining their cities as strong aviation hubs.

Demand to bring ATF in GST intensifies

Amidst this entire issue, the old demand of the aviation industry has once again intensified that ATF should be brought under the ambit of GST. At present, different VAT is applicable on ATF in different states and airlines are not able to avail the benefit of input tax credit. The industry believes that if ATF is included in GST, fuel costs can be stabilized across the country.

SpiceJet, one of the largest airlines in the country, is currently going through very difficult circumstances. Due to which the company has decided to reduce the staff working with it. The company has decided to reduce 20 percent of its staff to deal with this financial crisis. If reports are to be believed, the company is soon going to send many of its employees on temporary leave without paying salaries.

Senior officers did not get salary
At present there are 6,800 employees in the company, many of whom will be eliminated in the retrenchment. So the company has only 13 planes left, which include 10 Boeing planes and 3 Q400s. Apart from this, 14 planes are also running on lease. Amidst its financial troubles, the company has not even paid 2-3 months’ salary to other senior employees. More than Rs 100 crore of TDS and PF is still pending.

SpiceJet is deep in debt
This problem is coming because SpiceJet has a lot of debt. Recently, the English court has ordered the airline to pay approximately Rs 68 crore in the dispute related to aircraft lease. Due to this new decision, the financial crisis of the already loss making company has increased even more. Airlines have also not deposited TDS and GST since April 2025. In such a situation, there is an atmosphere of tension between the airline staff and the pilots.

Pilot and crew under stress
There is a lot of tension among many employees and their families due to staff reduction in SpiceJet. Due to this retrenchment, the jobs of cabin crew, ground staff and some officers may be in danger. The company has not yet clarified how many jobs are being lost, but there are indications from inside and around the company that the layoffs are taking place in several phases. So the pilots will be given work for 21 days and will have to take leave for 9 days.

Bangladesh’s Tariq Rahman government has barred Indian budget airline SpiceJet from using its airspace due to non-payment of dues. Due to non-availability of airspace, some flights from Kolkata to Guwahati and Imphal are now having to take longer routes. This may impact flight times and operational costs

What did SpiceJet spokesperson say?
A SpiceJet spokesperson said on Thursday (February 19) that the airline is in regular communication with the concerned authorities on operational and procedural issues, including navigation charges. Calling it a general issue related to the industry, he said that work is being done constructively towards an early solution and scheduled flight services are continuing as per the rules.

How much does Bangladesh owe and since when?
He said that all scheduled flights are being operated as per the rules. Let us tell you that at present there is no direct impact on the passengers. However, due to closure of airspace, some flights are having to take alternative routes. Sources say that this step has been taken due to non-payment of dues. However, clear information regarding the nature and amount of the dues could not be immediately obtained. SpiceJet says that the airline is in touch with the concerned authorities.

SpiceJet shares fell by almost 1 percent
According to flight tracking data, some SpiceJet flights are adopting alternative and longer routes avoiding Bangladeshi airspace. Meanwhile, SpiceJet shares fell by about 1 percent during afternoon trading on BSE. The company had also recently recorded a loss of Rs 269.27 crore in the December 2025 quarter, which was attributed to rising costs and one-time expenses.

At present, the outbreak of cold is being seen across the country. The hilly states of North India are experiencing severe cold due to heavy snowfall. On Monday night, a blanket of fog spread from UP, Bihar to Assam. Its biggest impact has been on air travel. Many airline companies including Indigo and SpiceJet have issued travel advisories. Airlines said that bad weather and fog caused disruption in flight operations.

Air India posted on social media platform The airline has requested passengers to keep checking their flight status.

Indigo airline issued advisory

Meanwhile, Indigo airline, which is struggling with the situation of massive flight cancellations earlier this month, also issued a travel advisory on Monday (December 29, 2025). The airline said that there is a possibility of fog formation late at night, which may persist till the next morning, which will reduce visibility at many airports.

Indigo said, ‘Looking at the forecast, there may be some impact on flight operations and there may be some delay due to changes in operations as per the circumstances. We remain vigilant and are constantly monitoring the weather, so that your journey can go as smoothly as possible.

The airline also said that traffic on the roads may also be affected in the early morning due to low visibility. Therefore, passengers are advised to leave extra time to reach the airport.

Keep checking flight status for new updates – IndiGo

Indigo had said in a post made a few hours ago that evening fog has started appearing again around Dehradun, due to which the speed of flights is slowing down. The airline said, ‘Our teams are assisting passengers at the airport and are continuously coordinating with the relevant authorities to normalize flights as soon as the situation becomes favorable. Please keep checking the status of your flights for new updates.

Flight operations were severely affected on Friday after a major technical glitch in the AMSS system at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, due to which more than 200 flights were delayed. Earlier it was told that this has affected Mumbai Airport also, however later Mumbai Airport Authority said that advisory was issued to the passengers by mistake.

AMSS failed at Delhi airport

As soon as the AMSS system crashed at Delhi Airport, the air traffic control had to leave the automatic mode and work manually. Due to this, the data of each flight had to be processed manually. Distance calculations of the planes also had to be done manually and coordination had to be done through voice communication, due to which the operation of flights became much slower than usual.

Delay of more than an hour at Delhi airport

At present, there is an average delay of 62 minutes i.e. more than an hour in the departure of flights at Delhi Airport. According to data from Flightradar24, this delay has increased after a technical glitch in the air traffic control system. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has said that its teams are busy fixing the AMSS (Automatic Message Switching System), which supports ATC data. There are approximately 1,500 flight movements daily at Delhi Airport. Under normal conditions, 60-70 flights take off and land per hour. In such a situation, due to automation failure, the backlog of flights increased rapidly and the delay extended for several hours, the effect of which was seen in the entire network.

Mumbai Airport issued clarification

Mumbai Airport (MIAL) said that the advisory issued earlier was issued by mistake and was a human error. The airport clarified that all flight operations here are running completely normal and smoothly.

What is AMSS system?

AMSS is the system that sends flight plans, weather information, and other technical data between ATC and airlines. Once it fails, controllers have to enter all the data manually, which makes operations extremely slow and significantly affects flight time.

AAI issued advisory

Airport Authority of India issued a statement saying that due to AMSS malfunction at Delhi Airport, flight operations are getting delayed and the controllers are processing all the plans manually. Technical teams are continuously working on restoring the system. Passengers have been advised to stay in touch with their airlines and keep checking updated schedules.

Advisory issued for the convenience of passengers

Authorities have requested passengers to keep checking flight information from their respective airlines, be prepared for possible delays and follow instructions given at the airport. The situation is being monitored in both Delhi and Mumbai so that the system can be normalized as soon as possible.

India extends ban on pak airlines: After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India not only retaliated by running ‘Operation Sindoor’ and broke the back of the terrorists, but also taught a strong lesson to the neighboring country of Pakistan. India not only gave a befitting reply on the military front, but also hurt Pakistan’s economy. Now once again, India has taken counter action and has increased the ban on Pakistan Airlines in its aircraft for a month to the morning of 24 October.

Closed aircraft for Pakistan

This decision was taken on Monday in the NOTAM issued by the Indian Aviation Authorities. This step of India has come at a time when Pakistan issued a notice to keep the aircraft closure for the Indian Airlines for the same period. In this way, it has been almost six months when both countries have closed each other’s aircraft.

Ban started from 24 April

Significantly, after the Pahalgam terror attack in April, the relationship between New Delhi and Islamabad got worse. After this, Pakistan banned Indian aircraft in its aircraft, in response to which India also banned Pakistan Airlines. Since then, both countries have been increasing this ban by issuing demonetisation. However, this ban is only on the airlines of India and Pakistan, the airlines of the rest of the countries are allowed to use the aircraft of both countries.

Effect on 800 weekly flights

Around 800 weekend flights of India are being affected by Pakistan’s aerpace closure. These include flights from India to West Asia, Europe, UK and North America, which now have to go a long way. According to aviation analytics company Sirikam, only six flights of Pakistan Airlines (Lahore and Islamabad to Kuala Lumpur) used Indian aircraft.

But the situation is far more challenging for Indian airlines. Air India flights go to West Asia, Europe, North America and UK. Indigo flights operate from India to West Asia, Türkiye and Central Asia. Due to the shutdown of Pakistan’s aircraft, these airlines either have to take a long route or some flights have to be closed temporarily.

There was an outcry at Mumbai Airport on Friday (September 12, 2025). In fact, technical fault occurred while flying in a Bombardier Q400 aircraft of SpiceJet airline. For this reason, while flying, the outer wheel of the aircraft broke down and fell down. The aircraft of SpiceJet Airline left for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai with 75 passengers and crew members from Kandla Airport in Gujarat.

Although the incident took place while flying from Kandla Airport in Gujarat on the aircraft, but still the aircraft continued its journey and safely landing in Mumbai. However, soon after receiving the information of this incident, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was declared an emergency at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Aai The officer of the officer gave information about the incident

Officials confirmed that by the time Kandla Air Traffic Control (ATC) saw something falling down in the air, the aircraft had flew. The Airport Authority of India official said in his statement, ‘Kandla had seen something falling down soon after the ATC aircraft took off. After this, he immediately informed the pilot of the aircraft and sent the ATC jeep to bring the thing that falls from the plane.

He said, “When the ATC jeep reached the runway, he saw that the outer wheel of the aircraft and its metal rings had fallen.”

Rescue team was on high alert at Mumbai airport

Fire brigade and rescue teams were placed on high alert at Mumbai airport after receiving information about the fall of the aircraft. However, the aircraft safely landing on Friday (September 12, 2025) at 4 pm. The Mumbai Airport official said, “Despite a serious threat in the air, the aircraft itself reached the terminal while taxi and the passengers got off the aircraft without any untoward incident.”

Airline gave official statement about the incident

SpiceJet spokesperson said in an official statement about the incident, “On September 12, an outer wheel of a Q400 aircraft of SpiceJet going from Kandla to Mumbai was found on the runway. Nevertheless, the aircraft continued its journey and reached Mumbai and made a safe landing. After a safe landing at Mumbai Airport, the aircraft reached the terminal taxi with its strength and all the passengers landed normally.

Dgca What did the former official of the incident say about the incident,

At the same time, a former DGCA official said, ‘The wheel of the aircraft is a serious incident, but because the assembly of the wheel is of two units and one wheel was connected to the aircraft, so the located was handled. But if one came out of the aircraft, the other wheel could also come out.

The official said, ‘The pilot of the aircraft decided to land in Mumbai instead of returning to Kandla after the incident. It may be that he must have believed that Mumbai’s runway is long, which is better for landing in such difficult situations.

There was an uproar on Monday (July 14, 2025) in the aircraft SG 9282 going from Delhi to Mumbai when two passengers tried to forcibly move towards the cockpit while doing indiscipline during the taxing. A statement has also been issued by SpiceJet.

According to a statement issued by SpiceJet, “Both passengers were not ready to return to their seats despite repeated stopping cabin crew, other passengers and captains.” Keeping in mind the safety of the passengers and crew, the flight captain decided to bring the aircraft back to the bay instead of moving to the runway. After this, both the passengers were removed from the aircraft and handed over to CISF.

Aircraft was also returned to runway on 13 July

Earlier on July 13, SpiceJet’s Pune-Delhi flight SG-914 had to return from the runway due to technical fault. The flight was to leave at 12 noon, but after a delay of about 9 hours, flew at 9:05 pm.

Some passengers claimed that they were kept sitting inside the aircraft for two hours. However, SpiceJet rejected these claims. SpiceJet said that passengers were landed from the plane after about an hour. Due to the technical issue, the flight had to bring back the bay parking from the runway. The claim to keep passengers in the aircraft for 2 hours is wrong.

Passengers increased concern

Constant incidents of SpiceJet have increased the concern of passengers. Many passengers have appealed to DGCA to tighten fleet maintenance and passenger facilities. People are very scared after the Ahmedabad aircraft accident and are very worried due to the problems coming in flights.
