There has been an earthquake in Sri Lankan cricket, as Shammi Silva has resigned from the post of President of Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) with immediate effect. SLC has issued an official statement saying that not only Shammi Silva but all the office bearers and all the members of the executive committee have left their posts.

For the time being, the functioning of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board will remain in the hands of the Central Government. This decision was taken on Wednesday, 29 April. Let us tell you that SLC was surrounded by allegations of corruption and mismanagement for a long time. This is not the first time that Sri Lanka Cricket Board is surrounded in controversies. Earlier in the year 2023-24, the International Cricket Council had imposed a two-month ban on LLC citing political interference.

Issuing an official statement, the government said that with immediate effect the administrative work of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has been temporarily placed under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. A committee will be formed to solve the ongoing problems within the board and bring improvements in it.

Shammi Silva, who has been president four times, had resigned on Tuesday. It is being told that the responsibility of the board can be handed over to Aron Wickramaratne, who has been an investment banker by profession. Let us tell you that the performance of Sri Lankan cricket team has also been disappointing in recent times. The Sri Lankan cricket team had failed in the T20 World Cup 2026. Sri Lanka’s last ICC trophy came in 2014, when it won the T20 World Cup title. After that, Sri Lankan cricket team has not achieved any major achievement in 12 years.

After once again a disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, calls for major changes are being heard in the Sri Lankan cricket team. Despite being co-host, being out of the Super-8 stage of the tournament has proved to be a big blow for both the team and the fans. Now reports are coming out that this defeat can directly impact the team’s captaincy and selection committee.

Pressure increased as soon as he was out of Super-8

There were a lot of expectations from the Sri Lankan team, which made a great start by winning three consecutive matches in the group stage. However, as soon as the team reached the Super-8, its performance suddenly dropped. In the first match, England lost and after that New Zealand also defeated them. These two consecutive defeats closed all paths for the team to reach the semi-finals.

The Sri Lankan team, which won the T20 World Cup in 2014, has not been able to even reach the top-4 in major tournaments for the last several years. This time, even while playing on the home ground, the team could not live up to the expectations, due to which the pressure on the cricket board to take tough decisions has increased.

The blame may fall on the captain and selectors

According to AFP reports and news agency reports, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board will review the team’s performance after the tournament is over. After this, big decisions like removal of captain Dasun Shanaka and national selectors can be taken. It is also being said that some officers may resign from their posts themselves.

Earlier, the team’s head coach Sanath Jayasuriya had announced in January itself that he would step down from his post after the World Cup. In such a situation, big changes can be seen in team management in the coming time.

What did the captain say after the defeat?

Captain Dasun Shanaka was looking quite dejected after the defeat against New Zealand. He admitted that being out of the tournament like this in front of the home crowd is a very shameful feeling. According to him, the team had started well, but at important moments both the bowlers and batsmen came under pressure.

Shanaka said that the team will now have to give up the habit of depending on one or two players. He also believed that positive thinking and aggressive attitude is very important in a fast format like T20, but the team could not show the same game in this tournament.

Now it will be interesting to see what kind of changes take place in Sri Lankan cricket after the tournament and whether the team moves towards the future with new leadership or not.

The indications of Pakistan’s match boycott before the T20 World Cup 2026 have left Sri Lanka deeply worried. Being the co-host, Sri Lanka has described this decision as a big blow not only for cricket but also for the economy and international image of its country. In this context, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has sent a formal letter to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and presented its stand strongly.

Sri Lanka expressed displeasure

In this letter sent by Sri Lanka Cricket, it has been clearly stated that the absence of a big match like India-Pakistan will reduce the shine of the entire tournament. SLC believes that this match has not only resulted in record sales of tickets, but hotel, travel and local businesses were also going to get huge benefits. Now due to the news of boycott, hotel bookings in Colombo have started getting cancelled, which is a matter of concern.

Remembered the pain of 2009 again

In its letter, Sri Lanka reminded the terrorist attack on the team bus in Lahore in 2009. The players and support staff of the Sri Lankan team were seriously injured in that attack. Even after all this, when other teams were reluctant to go to Pakistan, Sri Lanka showed courage and decided to play cricket there. SLC reminded that the first team to play Test in Pakistan in 2019 was also Sri Lanka, which played an important role in the return of international cricket in Pakistan.

fear of financial loss

Sri Lanka says that it has completed all security and organizing preparations for this high-profile match. In case of cancellation of the match, the board may suffer a loss of crores of rupees. Along with this, there will be a direct impact on tourism, which is already going through difficult times.

appeal to sportsmanship

Sri Lanka Cricket has appealed to Pakistan to maintain the “spirit of reciprocity” i.e. the spirit of mutual cooperation and trust. SLC says that when Pakistan needed international support, Sri Lanka stood with it. Now that Sri Lanka is the host and is assuring complete security, Pakistan should also take the field in the interest of cricket and fans.

Now the ball is in Pakistan’s court

After Sri Lanka’s appeal, now all eyes are on the decision of Pakistan Cricket Board and Government. It will be interesting to see whether Pakistan listens to its old friend or sticks to the boycott stance. This decision may impact not just one match but the entire tournament and cricket relations.

Now only 1 day is left for the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup (T20 World Cup 2026) to start, but it is not yet clear whether the India vs Pakistan match will take place on 15th February or not. Actually, the Pakistan government had announced on February 1 that their team is participating in the tournament but they are boycotting the match against India. However, PCB has not yet said anything in writing to ICC. Now the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has written a letter to the PCB in a threatening manner asking it to reconsider its decision.

According to a Sri Lankan news website, Sri Lanka Cricket Board President Shamsi Silva has written a letter to the PCB asking it to reconsider the decision to abandon the match against India. In the letter, he has written that he has received information from media reports that Pakistan will not play the match against India, which is to be held on February 15 at R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka will suffer loss

Sri Lanka Cricket told in this letter that if this happens then they will also suffer loss. It was written in the letter that as the host country, we are eagerly waiting for the tournament. Logistics, security and commercial preparations have been made for the matches to be held in Sri Lanka. Ticket sales of matches are also included in this. It was told in the letter that the sale of tickets for the India-Pakistan match was tremendous, but if Pakistan does not play, it will have a bad impact.

Sri Lanka warned Pakistan that if this big match does not take place, it will have a bad impact. Sri Lanka will suffer economic, projected tourism income loss. Sri Lanka also reminded Pakistan of the previous time when it visited Pakistan even in a challenging and sensitive situation. Sri Lanka said that when other cricket teams were not coming to Pakistan, this decision was taken out of mutual respect between the two boards.

Request made regarding IND vs PAK match

Assuring complete security, professionalism and fairness in all matches, Sri Lanka Cricket has requested the Pakistan Cricket Board to reconsider its decision of not playing the match against India.

The dispute between ICC and Bangladesh regarding T20 World Cup 2026 has now become a big issue in international cricket. While India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are seen face to face in this entire matter, co-host Sri Lanka had maintained silence till now. However, now for the first time Sri Lanka has openly expressed its views on this dispute.

Now what did Sri Lanka say?

After remaining silent for a long time, Sri Lanka has now made its stand clear on this entire controversy. Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Bandula Dissanayake said that his country does not want to get involved in any kind of political controversy. He clearly said that India, Pakistan and Bangladesh – all three are friendly countries of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka will not support any one side. He said that despite being a co-host, Sri Lanka would remain impartial in this matter.

Full focus on the tournament

The Sports Ministry of Sri Lanka has also made it clear that their first priority is the successful organization of T20 World Cup 2026. Special attention is being kept on security and arrangements especially regarding India-Pakistan matches. It is noteworthy that considering the current situation, Pakistan will play all its matches in Sri Lanka, which also includes the match against India.

Where did the controversy start?

Bangladesh Cricket Board had raised objection regarding its matches being played in India in T20 World Cup 2026. After this a period of controversies started. The team had to play matches in Kolkata and Mumbai in the initial phase. Citing security, Bangladesh had demanded from ICC that all its matches should be held in Sri Lanka.

The ICC definitely considered this demand, but in the end it clearly refused. The board gave Bangladesh 24 hours to give its final decision on playing in the tournament. Bangladesh did not give any reply till the stipulated time. After this, ICC took a big step and excluded Bangladesh from the tournament and included Scotland in its place.

Pakistan also looked angry

After Bangladesh’s exclusion, Pakistan also expressed displeasure over this decision. The Pakistan Cricket Board openly supported Bangladesh and even hinted that Pakistan could also boycott the World Cup or boycott the match against India. Because of this the matter became more heated.

When will T20 World Cup start?

T20 World Cup 2026 will start from 7th February, while the final match will be played on 8th March. Now it will be interesting to see what decision Pakistan takes in the coming days and whether this dispute takes a bigger shape or not.

SL vs PAK: Pakistan is once again surrounded by the shadow of terror. After the suicide attack in Islamabad, serious questions have started being raised on the security system of the country. Meanwhile, the touring Sri Lankan cricket team has expressed deep concern about its safety and many players are in a mood to leave the country immediately. At the same time, Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has given a clear warning to the players that if any player or staff member leaves Pakistan, he will have to face consequences.

Players scared after the explosion

The car bomb blast in Islamabad on Tuesday created a stir in the Sri Lankan camp. It is being told that the Pakistani team was also staying in the same area at the time of the blast. After this, eight players of the Sri Lankan team and some support staff expressed their desire to return home immediately. Players say that the situation is worsening and it is no longer safe to live in Pakistan.

SLC’s strict stance

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has refused to accept this decision of the players. The board said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the local administration have given full assurance of security, so there is no need for anyone to go back. SLC warned in its statement that if any player or staff member leaves Pakistan in violation of the board’s order, a formal review will be conducted and disciplinary action will be taken against him.

That means, players who flee Pakistan may have to face strict action from the board after returning to Sri Lanka.

Pressure on players increased

According to sources, throughout the day the Sri Lankan players kept demanding to get out of Pakistan. They want the tour to be canceled midway. Sri Lanka has played only one ODI match so far in this tour, while two more matches are left. After this, they also have to play a triangular T-20 series with Zimbabwe in Pakistan.

Keeping in view the concerns of the players, a long meeting was held late night between the board, team management and Pakistani security agencies. For this reason, the remaining two ODI matches have been postponed by one day. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that now these matches will be played on 14 and 16 November.

Pakistan’s disgrace again

This incident is another big blow to the image of Pakistan. In the last few years, due to repeated terrorist attacks there, many teams have withdrawn from the tour. Now, with the Sri Lankan team feeling insecure, questions have once again been raised on hosting Pakistan.
