Political turmoil has intensified after the results of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday formally staked claim to form the government in the state. His party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the largest party in the 234-member assembly, increasing speculation about the formation of the new government.

Met Governor, staked claim to form government
Vijay reached Lok Bhawan in Chennai and met Governor RN Ravi. During this, he submitted a formal letter and staked claim to form the government and assured that his party will prove majority in the Assembly within the stipulated time. This meeting is being considered as the first major constitutional step towards the formation of a new government.

TVK becomes the largest party, but far from majority
In the recently held elections, TVK performed brilliantly by winning 108 seats and became the largest party in the state. However, the party is still far from the figure of 118 seats required to form the government, due to which it will need the support of allies.

Vijay elected leader of legislative party
After the election results, Vijay held a meeting with his newly elected MLAs and senior leaders. After this, all the MLAs unanimously elected him as the leader of the legislative party, paving the way for him to present his claim before the Governor.

Political talks intensified for support
After the elections, political activities are intense in Chennai. Congress has already indicated to support TVK with conditions, while Left parties and other small regional parties are also holding internal discussions. At the same time, the ruling DMK, which has suffered a major setback in this election, has also started considering its strategy after the defeat.

performance of other parties
In this election, DMK won 59 seats, AIADMK won 47 seats, Congress won 5 seats and PMK won 4 seats. Apart from this, IUML, CPI, VCK and CPM got 2-2 seats, while BJP, DMDK and AMMK won 1-1 seat.

Assembly Election 2026: DMK, the main political party of Tamil Nadu, has raised its voice against the proposed delimitation exercise of the Central Government. The aim of delimitation is to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats on the basis of population growth, which has raised concerns in the southern states.

According to the 1971 census, when India’s population was approximately 550 million, the current strength of the Lok Sabha is 543 members.

Now that the population has crossed 1.4 billion, the central government is planning to expand parliamentary representation through a new delimitation process.

According to reports, the proposed Delimitation Amendment Bill aims to increase the number of Lok Sabha MPs from 543 to around 850 while increasing the representation from Union Territories from 20 to 35.

The bill is expected to be introduced during the special session of Parliament to be held in the coming three days. Southern states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have strongly opposed the move, arguing that it will harm areas that have successfully implemented population control measures. They fear that the redistribution of seats based on population will disproportionately benefit northern states like Uttar Pradesh, where population growth rates have been higher.

According to reports, the central government is also considering delimitation based on 2011 census or earlier data instead of waiting for the census after 2026 as mandated under the Delimitation Amendment Act of 2002, which has further increased the controversy.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has strongly criticized this proposal, warning that it will reduce the state’s representation in Parliament and harm federal principles.

He warned that if the central government goes ahead with this plan, his party will launch a big movement and the old DMK will be seen again. On the other hand, Edappadi K. Palaniswami played down the concerns, saying the delimitation process would not have any adverse impact on Tamil Nadu.

According to estimates, Tamil Nadu’s Lok Sabha seats may increase from the current 39 to around 50 while Uttar Pradesh’s representation may increase from 80 to around 143, which will change the balance of power in Parliament to a great extent.

Meanwhile, the central government is also planning to introduce the Women’s Reservation Bill along with the delimitation proposal, which aims to implement 33 percent reservation for women in the 2029 general elections.

Congress has started laying the political chessboard for the upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Saturday stressed on MK Stalin’s alliance with DMK. He has said that the Congress party wants to win those seats which DMK had lost in the 2021 elections. Also, emphasis has been given by Congress on power sharing in the state. However, a few days ago DMK had rejected the possibility of any kind of power sharing.

This reaction of Congress leader Manickam has come on the statement given by DMK leader and Minister of State RS Raja Kannappan in Madurai on February 13. In this he had said that DMK will contest on 170 seats in the coming elections and will win 160 seats.

What did Manikam Tagore say in the post?

Responding to this, Virudhunagar MP Tagore posted on X. He said, ‘In 2021 you contested elections on 173 seats. Won 133 seats. We are demanding those seats which you have failed to win. Power sharing is necessary in the state. Sharing in power is our right. People will decide.

During this, he also shared a video of Raja Kannappan’s speech. However, Kannappan has denied any such possibilities and claimed to have won 160 seats.

DMK’s Stalin had refused the alliance

Actually, there are 234 seats in Tamil Nadu. The DMK and Congress alliance had won 151 seats in the 2021 elections. However, Stalin had recently refused any kind of alliance.

Stalin said, ‘We also know that this will not work in Tamil Nadu. He also knows this. This is a problem created by some people. They are deliberately conspiring that there will be a rift in the India Alliance. We are not worried about it. Rahul Gandhi is also not worried.

Congress and DMK will start talks on alliance

Here, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Selvaperunthagai announced in Chennai that talks on formal alliance between Congress and DMK will start from February 22. Despite BJP’s attempt to weaken the India alliance, the India Bloc remained united.

Here, Selvaperunthagai said that the election process is going very smoothly. We are going to start talks on this from 22nd February. BJP is thinking, nothing will happen there.

He said that BJP wants to throw out anyone from India Alliance to divide the vote bank, but this will not happen. We are with the Alliance.
