The launch of satellite internet service in India has been awaited for a long time. Many companies including Elon Musk’s Starlink and Jio have applied to the government for this and have also got provisional spectrum, but the wait for the launch is getting longer. Due to these reasons the service has not been launched yet

According to media reports, Scindia said that this service cannot be rolled out until Starlink and other companies fulfill the conditions set by the security agencies. He said that OneWeb, Starlink and Reliance Jio will have to take security clearance as well as ensure that users’ data remains in India. The government has allotted provisional spectrum to these companies and these companies are working closely with security agencies. This process is still going on. He also said that the Department of Telecommunications and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are working together to finalize the spectrum pricing.

There is no consensus on pricing

It is being said in the reports that there is no consensus between the Department of Telecommunications and TRAI regarding the pricing of spectrum. The Department of Telecommunications had given several suggestions, including increasing the annual spectrum fee from 4 percent to 5 percent and removing the fee of Rs 500 on every connection in urban areas, which TRAI has rejected. Now the Department of Telecommunications will present its views before the Digital Communication Commission (DCC), after hearing which the DCC will decide what next step should be taken for the pricing of spectrum. After the process is completed from here, it will be sent to the Union Cabinet for approval.

Satellite internet is a good option to provide internet in rural or remote areas but it can be a bit expensive and slower in latency compared to normal internet in cities.

Who is faster?

In terms of speed, normal internet (fibre) is faster and more reliable than satellite internet. Fiber has low latency and is a better choice for video calls, online gaming and high-resolution streaming. Satellite internet is beneficial when you do not have the option of normal broadband. Although the speed of satellite internet has improved after the advent of new technology, the effect of latency and weather still remains a challenge.
