Eye Problems Linked To Weight Loss Drugs: A new medical study has raised concerns about Wegovi, a famous drug used for weight loss. Research has claimed that this medicine can increase the risk of a rare but serious problem related to the eyes, which can lead to sudden loss of vision. Why is it dangerous for the eyes?

This study has been published in a medical journal, in which scientists found that among semaglutide based drugs, Wegovi appeared to be most associated with an eye disease called ischemic optic neuropathy. This is a condition when the blood supply to the eye veins reduces or stops. This can cause sudden blurring of vision and in some cases even loss of eyesight may occur permanently.

Medicine was made for diabetes

Actually, GLP-1 medicines were first made for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, but now they are also being used to reduce obesity rapidly. Both Wegovi and Ozempic contain an active compound called semaglutide. The only difference is that Vegovi is specifically approved to reduce obesity, whereas Ozempic is mainly given to diabetes patients.

Researchers analyzed side effect reports recorded in the US drug surveillance system between 2017 and 2024. Scientists examined about 3 crore reports, out of which more than 31 thousand cases were related to semaglutide drugs. In the study, drugs like Vegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro and Zapbound were compared.

Why is its risk higher despite fewer patients?

Although the total number of cases for Ozempic was higher because the drug has been in use for a longer time, the risk for Wegovi appeared to be the highest in the data. Research revealed 28 cases related to Wegovi and 47 cases related to Ozempic. Despite this, the risk of this eye disease in Wegovi was found to be about 75 times higher than normal, while in Ozempic it was about 19 times higher. Scientist believes that there could be many reasons behind this. Vegovi is usually given in higher doses. Apart from this, injected medicines act rapidly in the body. Researchers say that rapid weight loss, lack of water in the body, change in blood pressure or change in regulation of veins can reduce the blood supply to the eye veins.

Is this medicine really responsible?

However, experts have clearly said that this study does not directly prove that Wegovi is the cause of this disease. The data system used in research also has its limitations. In many cases, complete medical history was not available and some reports may have been over-reported due to media coverage. Nevertheless, experts say that this research cannot be ignored, because the use of these medicines in the treatment of obesity and diabetes is increasing rapidly across the world. Scientists are now preparing to do further and deeper research on these medicines.
