Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter plane crashed in Karbi Anglong district of Assam last night, in which two pilots of the Indian Air Force were martyred. The Air Force said that the pilots have been identified as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar.

The Air Force posted on Twitter saying that all IAF personnel express their deepest condolences and stand strongly with the bereaved family in this hour of grief. Let us tell you that Su-30MKI was on a training mission and went missing shortly after taking off from Jorhat airbase and then crashed. This airbase is located about 60 kilometers away from the accident site.

Officials had said that contact with this aircraft of Russian origin was lost at 7:42 pm. The Su-30MKI is a two-seat multi-purpose fighter jet developed by Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi. It is now manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under license for the Indian Air Force.

Sukhoi is considered to be the most powerful fighter aircraft.
The Indian Air Force has a fleet of more than 260 Su-30MKI jets, but the way this fighter jet crashed has raised questions about its maintenance. The Sukhoi Su-30 MKI, which was inducted into the Air Force in the early 2000s, is considered one of the most powerful fighter aircraft.

When did the crash happen before?
However, this is not the first time that a Sukhoi jet has crashed. Before this, Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft had crashed. In August 2019, a Sukhoi-30 MKI crashed in a paddy field near Tezpur in Assam during a routine training mission. During that time both the pilots managed to escape safely and later their lives were saved.

In May 2015, a Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft crashed shortly after take-off, about 36 kilometers south of Tezpur Air Force Base, with both pilots ejecting safely before the crash.

When India recently announced the purchase of 114 new Rafale fighter jets, there was a wave of happiness everywhere. Why not, this is the same deadly fighter plane which defeated Pakistan in Operation Sindoor. But it is also true that India’s biggest neighboring enemy is China, which is far ahead of India in terms of fighter jets. Even after the arrival of 114 Rafale, India will not be able to catch up with China. But why and how? Let us know…

Question 1: What is India’s 114 Rafale deal, and what is its status?
answer: India’s 114 Rafale deal is part of the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) programme, which is meant to provide air superiority to the Indian Air Force. On 12 February 2026, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for this deal. This deal is with France’s Dassault Aviation Company and 114 Rafale jets are to be purchased. 90 jets will be made in India, which will have 50% indigenous content. The total price of 114 Rafale jets is around Rs 3.25 lakh crore.

India has already inducted 36 Rafales from the 2016 deal and a deal for 26 marine variants was signed last year. With the addition of 114 new Rafales, India’s strength will increase manifold. This means that India will be able to compete with its most powerful neighboring enemy, China. But wait… first let us know what is the status of the existing fighter jets with India and China.

India’s 114 Rafale deal is part of the MRFA program.

Question 2: How many 4th generation and above fighter jets does India have?
answer: According to the report of Global Firepower, by February 2026, India has 480 to 485 fourth generation and above fighter jets, which are considered the backbone of the Indian Air Force…

Sukhoi SU-30MKI: It is a 4.5 generation heavy-duty twin-engine fighter jointly developed by Russia and India, which is the biggest strength of the Indian Air Force. India has 263 Sukhoi. Its supermaneuverability, canard delta wing design and advanced avionics systems make it unmatched in air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks, where it can carry long-range missiles like BrahMos. Under the upgrade plan, 84 jets are being made more advanced, which can magically change the game in air combat with its thrust vectoring technology.

Dassault Rafale: This 4.5 generation twin-engine delta wing multi-role fighter from France is considered the pride of the Indian Air Force. India has 36 Rafale jets, which include 28 single-seat EH and 8 double-seat DH. Rafale has proved its strength in missions like Operation Sindoor. Equipped with advanced AESA radar, electronic warfare systems and Meteor and Scalp missiles, this jet also has high maneuverability and stealth-like features, which is adept in carrying out precise attacks while avoiding enemy radar. In the coming time, this fleet will be further strengthened with the purchase of 114 more Rafales, giving India new heights in long-range strike capability.

HAL Tejas: India’s fourth generation indigenous lightweight single-engine delta wing fighter, of which 30 MK-1 variants are active, is a symbol of the flight of self-reliant India. Equipped with fly-by-wire controls, advanced AESA radar upgrades and internal weapons bay, this jet is the king in multi-role missions, including air-to-air refueling and precision strikes. 141 MK1A variants are on order, which will give new impetus to India’s air defense with its low radar cross-section and high-speed performance.

Dassault Mirage 2000: France’s fourth-generation single-engine delta wing multi-role fighter, of which 36 H/I variants are active in India, excels in high-speed interception. The upgraded 2000I standard with improved avionics and weapons compatibility enables it to perform air-to-ground strikes and reconnaissance missions. It can carry laser-guided bombs. This jet, which became famous for its role in the Kargil war, still keeps India’s air superiority strong.

Mikoyan MiG-29: It is a fourth generation twin-engine supermaneuverable fighter of the Soviet Union, of which 59 jets are active in the Indian Air Force. It plays a big role in air defense. The UPG variant has an upgraded radar, glass cockpit, and increased engine thrust making it specialized in ground attack and interception, where it uses BVR missiles. This jet, deployed on the borders of India, keeps an eye on the movements of the enemy and gives quick response in the war.

Question 3: How many 4th generation and above fighter jets does China have?
answer: According to the Global Firepower report, by February 2026, China is expected to have about 1,600 to 1,800 4th generation and above fighter jets, making the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) the world’s fastest growing and modern air force…

Chengdu J-20: It is China’s main 5th generation stealth fighter, with more than 300 jets active in February 2026 and this number is increasing rapidly. The twin-engine, heavy-weight air superiority fighter features a stealth design, AESA radar, supercruise (with WS-15 engines) and long-range PL-15/PL-21 missiles. With this, it can destroy the target from a distance of 100 km while avoiding enemy radar. The new variants include maritime strike and twin-seat J-20S, which give the PLAAF a strong deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.

Shenyang J-16: 4.5 generation multi-role strike fighter, with approximately 450 jets active and projected to reach 900 by 2030. Developed on the basis of SU-30, this twin-seat jet is equipped with AESA radar, electronic warfare systems and large weapons payload (anti-ship, ground attack), making it adept in high-speed and long-range operations. It is the main multi-role force of the PLAAF, adept at both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Chengdu J-10: It is a 4th/4.5 generation lightweight multi-role fighter, of which more than 600 jets are in service. This single-engine, delta-canard designed jet is equipped with high manoeuvrability, AESA radar and BVR missiles like PL-15. These features make it expert in air defense and ground attack. The J-10C variant is the most advanced and accounts for the largest share in the PLAAF’s numbers.

More than 600 Chengdu J10 are in service in the Chinese military.

Shenyang J-11: It is a 4th generation air superiority fighter jet, whose number is around 400. The twin-engine, heavy fighter includes advanced avionics, thrust vectoring and long-range missiles, making it strong in long-range interception. Although the older variants are gradually being retired, the upgraded J-11B still holds a major responsibility.

Sukhoi Su-30MKK/MK2 and Su-35S: There are above fourth generation multi-role fighter jets of Russian origin, the total number of which is more than 150. These are equipped with high manoeuvrability, long-range radar and multi-role capability, but China is now gradually replacing them with the domestic J-16. These are still used in training and special missions.

Question 4: So will India remain behind China even after the arrival of 114 Rafale and why?
answer: After the arrival of 114 Rafale, India will have a total of 176 Rafale jets and the total fleet of fighter jets will reach above 600. But the main reason for lagging behind China is China’s numerical superiority, where it already has more than 1,800 fighter jets.

China is making more than 200 new fourth and fifth generation jets every year. China has more than 300 5th generation jets like J-20, which are ahead of any Indian jet in stealth and long-range strikes, whereas India does not yet have any 5th generation jet.

According to the report of the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), Rafale is 4.5 generation, which is better than J-10 or J-11, but it will be difficult to compete with the stealth and sensor fusion of J-20. Also, the squadron strength of the Indian Air Force is currently 30, while the sanctioned strength is 42 and due to the two-front challenge of China-Pakistan, India needs more jets.

Question 5: Will this situation of India ever change? What will happen next?
answer: HAL Chairman Dr. D.K. According to Sunil’s report of June 25, 2025, 6 Tejas will be delivered by March 2026. With this, India’s squadron strength will reach 42 and 450 jets can be deployed on the China-Pakistan border. But China is working on 6th generation jets, which will have AI and hypersonic speed. India’s deterrence capability will increase in the coming years, as shown by Rafale in Operation Vermillion (2025), but if China’s production speed continues, India will have to import more or accelerate indigenous programs, otherwise the gap in air superiority will remain.

President Draupadi Murmu has created history by flying in both the main fighter jets of the country, Sukhoi and Rafale, which rescued Pakistan in Operation Sindoor. On Wednesday, the Supreme Commander of the country took a half-hour flight in Rafale at Ambala airbase.

Murmu has also flown Sukhoi
In the year 2023, the President flew in a Sukhoi fighter plane from Tezpur Airbase (Assam). In the first phase of Operation Sindoor (night of 6-7 May), Rafale fighter planes bombed and destroyed the headquarters of terrorist organizations Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan. In the second phase of the operation, on the night of 9-10 May, the Air Force destroyed 11 airbases of Pakistan using BrahMos missiles from Sukhoi fighter jets.

Guard of honor given to Draupadi Murmu
On Wednesday morning, President Murmu reached Ambala airbase, where he was given a guard of honour. After this the President met the air warriors deployed at the airbase. The Golden Arrow (17th) squadron of Rafale fighter aircraft deployed at Ambala airbase played an important role in Operation Sindoor. During this, the Supreme Commander was given a briefing about Rafale, Ambala Airbase and the operational capabilities of the Air Force in the presence of Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh.

This month, on the occasion of Air Force Day (8 October), the Air Chief Marshal honored the Golden Arrow Squadron with a citation for playing an important role in Operation Sindoor. On the occasion of Independence Day, the government had announced the award of Vir Chakra to the (then) Commanding Officer (CO) of the Golden Arrows, Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu. When Rafale fighter aircraft came to India from France for the first time in the year 2020, the first squadron was deployed at this Ambala airbase (the second squadron is deployed in Hasimara, West Bengal).

Group Captain Amit Gehani, the current Commanding Officer (CO) of the Golden Arrow Squadron, flew in the Rafale fighter with the Supreme Commander. According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the aircraft flew at a speed of 700 kilometers per hour at an altitude of about 15 thousand feet. The President traveled about 200 kilometers by air in half an hour.

He also flew with the President
Group Captain Gehani and the Air Force Chief, at the same time as the President, also flew in Rafale from Ambala airbase. After take-off, the President expressed his sentiments by writing a brief note in the visitor’s book at the airbase. In the visitor’s book, the President wrote, ‘I am extremely happy to come to Air Force Station Ambala for my first flight on the Rafale aircraft of the Indian Air Force. Flying on Rafale is an unforgettable experience for me.

The Supreme Commander wrote that ‘This first flight on the Prabal Rafale aircraft has filled me with a new sense of pride in the defense capabilities of the nation. I congratulate the Indian Air Force and the entire team of Air Force Station, Ambala for the successful conduct of this flight. Before Draupadi Murmu, the then President APJ Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil had flown in Sukhoi fighter aircraft.
India is going to take a big step towards strengthening the Air Force. Ministry of Defense Ministry will meet Russian officials this week. According to media reports, there will be talks on joint construction or direct purchase of 5 additional S-400 air defense systems from Russia to increase India’s long distance defense capabilities.

According to reports, this deal will be cleared before Vladimir Putin’s annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before coming to India on 5 December.

Government will be deal with government

According to a report by Hindustan Times, both sides have already agreed to the cost of additional 5 systems with an annual increase from the price of 2018. There are reports that 3 out of 5 systems will be purchased directly. Apart from this, the rest will be constructed under technology transfer by companies of Indian private sector.

According to the report, people aware of the case told on the condition of anonymity that this deal will be between the government from the government. In this, facilities for maintenance, repair and overhaul will be established in collaboration with the Indian private sector. He further said that the news of buying the S-500 system towards India is wrong. The reason for this is that such a system is still under consideration in Russia.

India will get 2 and S-400 systems by 2026

From Russia, 2 S-400 air defense systems, which are part of the 2018 deal, will reach India by the end of 2026. India and Russia are talking about buying 5 more air defense systems, which can protect India’s 7 thousand kilometers long coastline.

India can also buy missiles from Russia

India is also searching for the air-to-air missile and RVV-BD from Russia to make the SU-30mki fleet even more powerful. The reason for this is that Pakistan is also using a PL 15 air -to -air missile with 200 km of China -made 200 km.

India Air Force is going to include such fighter jets in its fleet, whose enemies will fly away as soon as they hear the name. Recently, the Indian Air Force has given the contract to make Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) 97 Mark-1 A Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas Fighter Jet) to replace MiG-21. A deal of Rs 62,370 crore has been done with the Center and HAL. This was the second order for HAL for Tejas fighter jet.

India will buy SU-57 fighter jet from Russia

After the retiring of MiG-21, only 29 squadrons are left instead of 42 in the Indian Air Force. India is also planning to buy SU-57 fighter jet from Russia soon. It is being told that India will take 36 fighter jets required for two two squadrons directly from Russia. However, it has not yet been officially confirmed by the government.

According to the IDRW report, the Indian Air Force has proposed a 30-35 percent increase in its strength. As soon as this happens, the number of squadron of the Indian Air Force will reach 54 to 56. A squadron in the Air Force has 18 to 20 fighter aircraft. The Air Force is not only insisting on increasing the number of fighter jets, but technology and capacity are also being further advanced.

Indian Air Force squadron will be increased

Till now, India had set a target of 42 squadron to fight war on two fronts. After Operation Sindoor, India is now focusing on increasing its number of squadron. After beating India, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is engaged in improving its potential with China. The Indian Air Force is also focused on developing Tejas MK2 and fifth generation stealth fighter Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), which will be in India itself.

Russia’s SU-57 is an advanced fighter jet, in which both sensor and signature management are available, while these two are not available together in Rafael. The radar system present in it identifies the enemy as soon as possible and its electro-optical system warns the missile. As soon as the Indian Air Force has 56 squadrons, the total fighter jets will be more than 1000, which has led to sleep for Pakistan and China.

The world’s most advanced weapons are equipped with 5th generation fighter jets stealth technology, supercruz capacity, advanced sensor fusion and AI based systems, which give the strength to escape from the enemy’s radar. Only three countries in the world, America, Russia and China have these jets operational. But the question is, which of these is the most strong and how far has India’s own 5th generation project reach? Let’s know

America’s powerful fighter jet

First of all, if we talk about America, America has two Dhansu 5th generation jets. F-22 raptor and F-35 Lightning II. F-22 has been in service since 2005. This is a jet that rules the air. If it descends in an operation, then the havoc is fixed for the enemy’s aerial fleet. Its stealth is so tremendous that it makes it almost invisible with radar. The F-22 raptor is only near the Air Force of America. That is, America has not sold it to any country. F-35 has been in the army since 2015, it is multi-roll jet. Wind to air, land attack, everything. This sensor is equipped with fusion, which gives the pilot complete information about the enemy. These jets are connected to networking, meaning one jet can send data to another.

Russia’s fighter jet

Russia’s SU-57 Falal has been in service since 2020. Russian company Sukhoi has a fifth generation multi -roll fighter jet. This is a twin engine jet, which fly at 2 speed. This jet is designed for air fighting, land attack on land and strike on marine goals. But in the stealth it is behind America. Its radar cross section (RCS) is large, that is, more visible on the radar.

China fighter jet

China’s J-20 Myte Dragon is operational from 2017. It is also a twin engine, a 2-speed long-range jet. The frame and internal weapons with its textured angle helps protect it from the radar. This largely resembles America’s F-22 and F-35. China’s strength is in number and range, but America is ahead in quality.

Who is the most powerful

Currently, the US has F-22 and F-35, Russia has SU-57 and China has J-20. Of these, America’s F-22 raptor was once called the deadliest fighter. But America’s F-35 is the most modern and most expensive fighter aircraft to date, which is estimated to be more than $ 1.7 trillion.

Where did India reach

India has taken an important step towards design and developing the AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft) 5th generation aircraft in the country. DRDO’s ADA is designing. It will have a single seat, twin engine, fighter aircraft. The Advanced Stealth coatings and internal weapon bay will be in American and Russian aircraft. Currently, India has Sukhoi-30 MKI, but AMCA will be able to compete with enemy’s stealth aircraft with the fifth Jane. Being indigenous, maintenance will be easier and low cost. This project costing 15 thousand crores is expected to be delivered by 2035.

Russia has shown the world a new trailer of its military skills by testing the hypersonic missile from its fifth generation stealth fighter jet SU-57. This has been confirmed by the Chief of the Main Staff and First Deputy Commander in Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Lieutenant General Alexander Maqsimatsev. He said that the SU-57 fighter aircraft is now equipped with hypersonic weapons and Russia’s aerospace forces are getting advanced and modern weapons systems every year.

He told in an interview that according to the government’s order, now modern fighter aircraft like SU-57 are being delivered and fast. Russia has been indicating to install hypersonic missiles in its jet aircraft for the past few years. In February 2023, Russia’s Tass news agency reported that a small but deadly “air-to-piece hypersonic missile” was prepared and tested for SU-57.

What is Jircon Hyperconic Missile?
Jircon is Russia’s most modern hypersonic cruise missile. It was first included in the Russian Navy in the year 2023. This missile has also been deployed in submarines. Its biggest feature is its speed and strength. Jircon’s speed is Mach 9, that is, it runs nine times at the speed of voice-at a speed of 11,000 kilometers per hour.

Its strike range is up to 1000 km, so that it can target enemy’s hideouts from a distance. Its speed and firepower is so deadly that it can cheat any air defense system. Not only this, the strength of its carnitic energy is so high that it can completely destroy the biggest warship or aircraft career.

How far Nircon is compared to Western countries?
Jircon’s capabilities are much higher than the missiles of Western countries. America’s fastest hypersonic missile is SM-6, whose speed is only Mach 3.5 and the range is limited to 450 km. At the same time, China claims that it has a missile named YJ-21, which is equal to Jircon i.e. Mach 9 speed and 1000 km range, but no country in Europe has any missile that can match Jircon. In this sense, Russia has gone beyond the world in this technology.

SU-57 and Jircon duo: Radar also cheated
SU-57 is a fighter aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art stealth technology. It is very difficult to catch it with radar. Now in this aircraft, the Jircon missile has been integrated by hiding the internal weapon bay ie inside the aircraft. This means that the enemy cannot look at this missile until it fire.

SU-57 has been prepared in such a way that it can carry out a very fast-paced distance attack. Russia has already made an air-to-air R-77M missile for this, whose range is more than 400 kilometers. Apart from this, in October 2023, Russia’s government media claimed a new long-range cruise missile test, which is based on KH-101/102 and the range of about 3500 km.

Big question for India: Will SU-57 buy?
India has recently refused to buy America’s F-35 fighter jet. In such a situation, now the defense experts are eyeing whether India will now move towards buying SU-57 of Russia? SU-57 is not only equipped with stealth technology, but now hypersonic weapons have also been added to it. If India buys this fighter jet, it can take the strength of the Indian Air Force to a new height. India and Russia have already strong defense relations and the involvement of state-of-the-art fighter jets like SU-57 can increase India’s strategic capacity manifold.

Indian Air Force Land and Go Drill Ganga Expressway: The Indian Air Force created a new history on the Ganga Expressway on Thursday (May 02). In the Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, for the first time at night, the state -of -the -art fighters of the Air Force made the country feel proud by making a successful night landing on the special airstrip on the expressway. A large number of people from the surrounding districts also arrived to see the occasion and they felt proud to see the direct performance of India’s military strength.

As soon as at around 9 pm, powerful fighter aircraft like Rafael, Sukhoi-30 MKI and Super Hercules with skyscrapers took off in the dark sky and then started touching the strip of the expressway, so there was a wave of enthusiasm among thousands of people present there. People started raising slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Pakistan Murdabad’.

The exercise is being organized to assess the expressway’s potential as an alternative runway during time of war or national emergencies. pic.twitter.com/31q2jxklyc

People’s spirit of patriotism showed

In a conversation with ABP News after the night landing, the local people said that it was proud to see the scene. Some people said that the whole world saw the demonstration of India’s strength today. At the same time, many people appreciated the Modi government at the Center and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and said that as long as these two leaders are, the military power of India will increase continuously.

People said that the way the terrorist attack on innocent civilians took place recently in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, now the country should give a strong reply to Pakistan. He said that such military preparations prove that India is now fully ready to face any situation.

Know how much is the length of Ganga Expressway

Ganga Expressway is an ambitious project in Uttar Pradesh, which is 594 km in length and will spread from Meerut to Prayagraj. In this, a 3.5 km long airstrip has been built near Shahjahanpur, which can be used for Air Force aircraft and landing in an emergency. This facility is a big step towards strengthening the security system of the country.

The government aims to dedicate the Ganga Expressway to the public by November 2025. Practice like night landing is an indication that this expressway is not only very important from traffic, but also from a strategic point of view.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully conducted the release trials of the long distance glide bomb (LRGB) ‘Gaurav’ from Sukhoi Fighter Jet SU-30. During these trials, the weapon was integrated at several stations in various war conferences, which had a target on an island. The tests successfully performed with accuracy up to 100 km.

Characteristics of Gaurav Bomb
The weight of the Gaurav bomb is 1,000 kg square. It has been designed and developed indigenously on behalf of Research Center Imrat, Ordnance Research and Development Establishment and Integrated Test Range Chandipur. INS and GPS data have been combined with highly accurate hybrid navigation schemes. Talking about capacity, Gaurav Bomb is capable of penetrating long distance goals with accuracy.

It was tested (8–10 April 2025) by SU-30 MKI aircraft. Gaurav Bomb was successfully performed with accuracy up to 100 km. Adani Defense Systems and Technologies and Bharat Forge will form it.

Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and IAF for successful testing of ‘Gaurav’
Posted on X on behalf of the Defense Minister’s office, it was said that DRDO India has successfully conducted successful tests of Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) ‘Gaurav’ from SU-30 MKI during 8-10 April 2025. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, IAF and industry for successful development tests of ‘Gaurav’. He said that the development of ‘Gaurav’ will further increase the capabilities of the armed forces.

These tests have paved the way to include this weapon in the Indian Air Force, which is an important step in strengthening India’s defense capabilities. The Indian Air Force did not have any such glide bomb during the Balakot air strike. In such a situation, Israeli’s Spice-20,000 bombs were dropped from the Mirage fighter jet of the Indian Air Force on the training camp of terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed.
