The political temperature in Delhi politics regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill was seen rising when a torch procession was organized by Mahila Morcha in the Inner Circle of Connaught Place. The biggest talk of this protest was the presence of Swati Maliwal, who recently joined BJP. For the first time after leaving Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), she was seen on a public political platform. Speaking from the stage, she made serious allegations against the opposition regarding the Women’s Reservation Act and shared her political experiences. He said that women of the country are progressing in every field today, but women’s participation in Parliament is still limited.

According to Swati Maliwal, women representation in Parliament is only 14.4 percent. At the same time, countries like Bangladesh and Nepal are also ahead in this matter. He claimed that attempts were made to introduce the Women’s Reservation Act several times in the last 30 years, but every time it did not move forward due to political opposition. She alleged that when she was in AAP, she had received instructions not to support the Women’s Reservation Bill.

She said from the stage, “I was in AAP till two days ago. I was told not to support the Women’s Bill. I have been going to Parliament for two years, but I was not even given a chance to speak. When instructions were received that the Women’s Reservation Bill was to be dropped, on the same day I decided to resign.” Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that this is an important step towards giving political rights to women and this bill will be passed.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also participated in the demonstration. She attacked the opposition regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill and said that even after so many years of independence, women are struggling for political representation. He said that the Women’s Reservation Bill was brought in the Lok Sabha seven times, but sometimes it was not allowed to move forward due to protests, sometimes uproar and sometimes political reasons. He accused the opposition parties of doing double politics regarding women’s rights.

‘The opposition’s protest is against the respect of women’

Delhi BJP state president Virendra Sachdeva also took part in the demonstration. He said that the opposition’s opposition to women’s reservation is against the respect of women. According to him, the government has made it clear that after delimitation the number of seats will not decrease but will increase, hence there is no possibility of loss to any section. BJP MP from Delhi Bansuri Swaraj told ABP News that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act was passed unanimously and all parties had supported it. He said that after the census and delimitation, there was a consensus on implementing reservation, but now the opposition seems to be going back on its own promise.

Swaraj further said that the provision of reservation for SC and ST women already exists in this law, whereas a separate constitutional arrangement will be needed regarding OBC reservation. According to him, the opposition is trying to divert attention from the main topic by sometimes raising the issue of Muslim women and sometimes of OBC women. A large number of women workers of BJP Mahila Morcha participated in this demonstration held in Connaught Place. During the torch procession, activists raised slogans in support of the Women’s Reservation Bill and showed solidarity with the demand to increase women’s political participation.
