Gig Workers on Strike: Gig workers associated with major online shopping and delivery platforms like Amazon, Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Flipkart and Zapto have announced to go on a nationwide strike from December 31, 2025. Along with this, the gig workers who were on strike since December 25 are also continuing their agitation with these demands. Gig workers say that the purpose of this strike is to put pressure on the companies, because their working conditions are getting worse with time, while the profits of the companies are continuously increasing.

gig workers strike

This strike is being organized under the banner of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers. Unions claim that this will include not only major metro cities but also a large number of gig workers from Tier-II cities, which could have a widespread impact on delivery services. According to union leaders, on one hand the demand for fast and timely delivery is continuously increasing, on the other hand workers are neither being paid commensurately nor are they being provided safe and respectable working conditions.

The biggest concern of gig workers is about the app-based control system. He says that payments, delivery targets and incentives are decided entirely through algorithms, in which transparency is almost negligible. According to the workers, the risks involved during delivery rest entirely on them, while the deadlines are kept very strict. Additionally, frequent changes in the incentive structure make their income unstable and uncertain, which seriously impacts economic security.

Protest against working conditions and pay

The union statement said that delivery workers act as the backbone of the platforms, especially during weekends, peak hours and festivals, but despite this they are facing problems like long working hours, insecure delivery deadlines and continuously decreasing earnings. Gig workers say that their protest will continue until their demands related to working conditions, remuneration and social security are not seriously considered.

Biryani: Nowadays it is the online era. From payment to ordering food, everything is done with the help of a single click. Many people like you and I order groceries as well as cooked food online. Some like pizza, some are crazy about chow mein, but it seems impossible for any other dish to compete with Biriyani. We are not saying this, but this has been revealed in the report of the 10th edition of ‘How India Swiggy’d.

Everything fails in front of Biriyani

It was told in the report what people across the country ordered the most in the year 2025. Biriyani has come first in this report. In the year 2025, people ordered the maximum number of biriyanis through Swiggy. In this also, people liked Chicken Biriyani the most. 93 million biriyanis ordered in India alone in 2025. Accordingly, 194 biryani were ordered every minute and 3.25 biryani were ordered every second.

This year people ordered chicken biriyani 57.7 million (5.77 crore) times. Out of this also, repeat orders were the highest. That means, after ordering Chicken Biriyani once, customers repeated their order again. Let us tell you that this is the 10th consecutive year, when Biriyani has topped the list of most ordered dish on Swiggy. This shows that trends come and go, but the charm of Biriyani has remained intact.

Lots of orders for pizza and burgers also received

Along with this, burger was at second place, which was ordered 44.2 million (4.42 crore) times. Pizza remained at third place, for which 40.1 million (4.01 crore) orders were made. Dosa was at fourth place, for which orders came 26.2 million (2.62 crore) times.

Swiggy said in its report, “Veg pizza was one of the top favorite items in the list of late night orders.” It may sound strange, but one customer alone ordered pizza worth Rs 47,578. Most burgers were sold during snack time (3-7 pm). 6.3 million (63 lakh) orders of chicken burger came. However, veg burger also did not lag behind with 4.2 million (42 lakh) orders. Apart from this, chicken rolls, chicken nuggets, veg pizza were also sold well during this period.

sipped a lot of tea

The combination of tea and samosas has also been a hit in the evening snack for Indians. In a year, people ordered 3.42 million (34.2 lakh) samosas and 2.9 million (29 lakh) cups of ginger tea through Swiggy. Apart from these, people also enjoyed Gulab Jamun, Kaju Katli, Gram Flour Laddus, Chocolate Cake a lot this year.

Swiggy: Online food delivery platform Swiggy is preparing to raise Rs 10,000 crore. For this the company will take the route of Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP). Swiggy is going to raise Rs 10,000 crore ($1.1 billion) from institutional investors by next week.

A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the company has shortlisted three banks to manage the share sale – Citigroup Inc. and the Indian units of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Kotak Mahindra Capital Company. The board had also on November 7 approved a plan to raise up to Rs 10,000 crore through qualified institutional placement, which is still pending shareholder and regulatory approval. The timing and size of the deal may still change.

Company suffered losses in the second quarter

Swiggy suffered a loss of Rs 1092 crore in the September quarter of financial year 2025, which was much more than the loss of Rs 626 crore a year earlier. However, during this period, the company’s operational revenue had increased from Rs 3601 crore in the same quarter last year to Rs 5561 crore. In the month of September itself, Swiggy approved the sale of its entire stake in bike-taxi service provider Rapido. This deal was done for about Rs 2400 crore.

Sold my share in Rapido

Three years ago in April 2022, 12% stake was purchased in Rapido for about Rs 1000 crore. Last month, Nuvama Institutional Equities had said that about Rs 7,000 crore in cash had strengthened Swiggy’s financial position. This also includes the amount received from the stake sold in Rapido. The company is now planning to raise up to Rs 10,000 crore through qualified institutional placement.

Swiggy follows the path of Zomato

Zomato also raised funds of Rs 8500 crore through qualified institutional placement last year. The company said the reason behind this was to increase its cash reserves. Now Swiggy is also ready to follow this path. In such a situation, it is being said that this is likely to increase competition between the two companies.

On one hand, the new Labor Codes being implemented in India are going to increase the salary, PF, and retirement benefits of the employees, while on the other hand, it will have a direct impact on E-commerce, Food Delivery, and Gig Economy Platforms. Platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Ola, Uber will now have to contribute 1–2% of the annual turnover or 5% of the total payments made to gig workers to the Social Security Fund to be created by the government. If the maximum 5% contribution is implemented, the additional charge is likely to increase to approximately ₹3.2 on a food delivery order and ₹2.4 on a quick-commerce order. Media reports say that this expense can be passed on the users by increasing Platform Fee, Surge Charges, or Delivery Fee. Although gig workers already get facilities like accident insurance, health insurance, non-payment of wages cover and maternity benefits, their social security coverage will increase further after the new codes. The challenge is that gig workers do not have fixed working hours, change platforms and work on multiple apps simultaneously, which can be operationally difficult to implement. In the video we will understand the complete effect in easy language.

Rapido Driver Earnings: A post is going viral on LinkedIn, in which a Rapido driver is seen talking about earning Rs 1 lakh per month. The post has been shared by a woman named Komal Porwal, who is a copywriter by profession. She wrote that she was riding Rapido at around 9 pm on Sunday night. Meanwhile, when he talked to the driver, it came to light that his monthly income was Rs 1 lakh.

Many ways to earn

Komal told that the driver was cheerful and friendly. Both of them kept talking when Komal asked him, ‘Brother, do you do this full time?’ On this, the driver told that he works as a Swiggy delivery partner in the morning, drives for Rapido in the evening and runs a local street food stall (selling pani puri) with his brother on weekends. That is, so that the family members can live happily and live a comfortable life, hence he keeps collecting money by doing various kinds of work day and night.

‘Going home happily’

Komal was surprised to hear this from the driver. Then he told Komal, that’s it ma’am, there is a little more hard work, but the house is running happily. Komal was surprised to know how he was earning around Rs 1 lakh per month through many different sources of income. This story of the Rapido driver changed Komal’s thinking that ‘people today do not know how to work hard.’ People are commenting in various ways on this post on social media.

One wrote, when we step out of the comfort zone, we get to hear many such people and such stories. Another user wrote, “I have seen that when a person is positive and happy, he earns more and lives life freely. Whereas if someone constantly runs after money, he becomes stressed and falls prey to bad habits and addiction.
Swiggy QIP fundraise: Online food delivery platform Swiggy is going to raise funds of up to Rs 10,000 crore. The Board of Directors of Swiggy Limited has approved the plan to raise up to Rs 10,000 crore through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) and other means.

Swiggy has received board approval to consider multiple modes of raising funds primarily through public and private placement, said an exchange filing on Friday. For this, the company will also take approval from the common shareholders, for which an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) will be held through video conferencing.

Why did the company take this decision?

This fund raising is happening at a time when the company is facing tough competition from its rivals like Blinkit and Zepto in the quick commerce segment, hence Swiggy is going to take this step to strengthen its position and balance sheet in comparison to them.

Swiggy’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Rahul Bothra had said in an interview to NDTV Profit, we have seen continuously increasing investment in this sector. As both old and new players continue to attract more and more investment, we want the flexibility to raise this growth capital. He further said, “Some of this will be strategic reserves, which we will be able to invest in the growth of our quick commerce business, as well as some innovations that we will continue to do in our business.”

September quarter results

Swiggy’s loss in the second quarter of the financial year 2025-26 increased to Rs 1092 crore from Rs 626 crore in the same quarter last year. However, during this period, operational revenue increased from Rs 3601 crore in the July-September quarter last year to Rs 5561 crore this year. Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal estimates 20-22 percent revenue growth in the financial year 2026-27 and maintains ‘buy’ rating with a target price of Rs 550.

Gst on online food delivery: People often do online food orders when they feel hungry, but from September 22, pockets will have to be loosened for it. In fact, many important decisions were taken in the GST Council meeting held last week.

Under this, online food delivery and quick commerce platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Zepto have been brought under the purview of 18 percent GST slab. That is, these platforms will have to pay GST on their services. In such a situation, now the question comes that how will companies manage this increased expenses, will the burden be put on customers?

Recently increased platform fees

The Economic Times, citing Morgan Stanley, has stated in its report that due to the new rule, Jomato’s food delivery business may cost about Rs 2 per order and about Rs 2.6 per order on Swigy. Currently, Jomato’s average delivery fee is Rs 11–12 and Swigy’s average delivery fee is Rs 14.5. Platforms like Jomato and Swigi are already facing increased costs. He also increased his platform fees recently to earn more profit during the festive season. Now questions are being raised on how companies will face the challenge of increasing the burden of GST.

Will the pressure increase on customers?

According to media reports, the company is currently assessing the increased expenditure on its operations and the impact on its profits. Now if this GST is put on customers, then of course the delivery charges will increase. Talking to the Indian Express, an official of the food delivery platform also said that we have no other option other than putting its weight on customers.
After the new rates are implemented from September 22, customers can approach dominos or other operators instead of ordering food from zomato or swigy. According to a report by the Indian Express, Dominos puts 5 percent GST with packaging charges on food audience. At the same time, online food delivery platforms will be charged 18 percent GST on delivery along with collecting platform fees including Rs 88 restaurant GST, Packing Charge and Rs 15 GST.

Zomato hikes platform fee: Food delivery company Jomato and Quick Commerce App Blinkit’s parent company Eaterial has increased its platform fees. The company announced on Tuesday that now 10 rupees platform charge to be taken from customers has been increased to Rs 12. That is, an increase of about 20% has come into force. Significantly, the company first started the platform charge on 2 August 2023.

Why is this not a slight increase?

Even though this increase was just 2 rupees, but according to experts, its effect is big. It is estimated that the company fulfills around 2.5 million orders daily. In such a situation, the company can earn additional Rs 15 crore daily from platform fees. On an annual basis, this income can reach Rs 180 to 200 crore.

However, users have also expressed their displeasure over this decision. He says that while discounts and offers are being reduced on the platform on the one hand, on the other hand the platform fees are continuously increasing.

Company will increase huge profits

In the June quarter, the company’s net profit had come down to just Rs 25 crore, compared to Rs 253 crore in the same period last year. However, on the other hand, the company’s revenue has increased from Rs 4,206 crore to Rs 7,167 crore. This increase has been possible due to aggressive investment in blinkit and other new businesses.

Jomato’s journey of platform fees

August 2023: For the first time a fee of Rs 2 is implemented

By the end of 2023: it increased by Rs 3

1 January 2024: Fees increase to Rs 4

31 December 2023: Temporary fees have been temporarily reduced to Rs 9

After this, the fee was permanently for Rs 10

And now it was increased to Rs 12 from September 2025

Swiggy platform fee: Swiggy, a company that delivers online food, has increased its platform fees from Rs 12 to Rs 14 per order. The company has made this change at a time when there is pressure to order during the festive season. Since people like to get food from outside due to all the busyness in the festive season, the daily order volume of the company is also growing rapidly.

Company will get strong profit

However, the increase of Rs 2 in the platform fee may be less to the customers, but the company is sure to benefit from it. The company will also be strong to some extent. Industry experts say that Swiggy usually fulfills more than 20 lakh orders every day. With the increase of Rs 2 in the platform fees, the company will generate an additional revenue of about Rs 2.8 crore every day. This will provide a profit of Rs 8.4 crore in every quarter and Rs 33.60 crore in a year.

Swiggy first started charging platform fees in April 2023. During that time, customers were charged 2 rupees on every order. With time, the company started increasing it in view of the growing operational cost. However, it had no effect on the company’s order volume.

The company’s first quarter results

The company earned a profit of Rs 1,197 crore double more than the same quarter last year in the first quarter of 2026. It also got support from its Rapid Grocery Service-Instamart. During this period, the company’s operational revenue also increased to Rs 4,961 crore, which reflects its strong position in both food delivery and instant commerce segment.

In this regard, Amazon spokesperson said, “AWS has a difficult decision related to business to abolish certain rolls. Such decisions are necessary as the resources are being used more along with investments to deliver innovation to our customers.” Many workers who came under the purview of this retrench said that they were informed via email that their positions had been abolished.

This has affected many teams in AWS. One of these teams is called ‘Specialists’. The company has started the new division Amazon Now for this. This service of Amazon can give a tough fight to Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart and Zepto in this segment. These three companies have a large stake in the market of Quick-commerce. These companies offer delivery in less than 15 minutes ranging from grocery to smartphones like gadgets.
