Cancer cases of cancer are increasing continuously worldwide, but skin cancer i.e. skin cancer has become a matter of serious concern. Especially in the fair-Skinned Population, its rate is very high. It has become clear from scientific researches that the skin color, the amount of melanin and the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays directly increase the chances of skin cancer.

Melanin and Skin Protection

Melanin is the natural pigment of our skin, which protects the sun from harmful UV rays. People with deep skin (Dark-Skinned) have a high amount of melanin, which in a way acts as a natural sunscreen. Research suggests that melanin reduces the DNA loss from the UV to about 3 times. At the same time, melanin is very low in white people. For this reason, their skin burns quickly and the risk of becoming cancer cells increases.

Genetic reasons are also responsible

MC1R genes have often been found responsible in people with fair skin. This gene is responsible for making melanin. When there is a disturbance in it, enough melanin is not formed and the safety from the UV is weakened. This is the reason that the risk of melanoma (Melanoma is the most dangerous skin cancer) is higher in white people.

UV rays and increasing threat

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in 2022, around 3.32 lakh new melanoma cases were registered worldwide. Of these, about 2.67 lakh cases were due to UV rays. This figure suggests that spending more time in the sun, tanning without security and lack of ozone layer is directly associated with skin cancer.

What does research say?

In a research (2020) published by the National Cancer Institute of America, it was found that the risk of skin cancer in white people is many times more than those with dark and brown skin. According to research, Melanoma’s Lifetime RISK in the Caucasian population is up to 2.6 percent, while people of African and Asian origin were found to be less than 0.1 percent. This difference clearly suggests that skin color and melanin volume have a profound effect on skin cancer.

How many cases come every year?

The figures of 2024 and 2025 show that skin cancer, especially melanoma, is constantly increasing. According to AIM at Melanoma Foundation, in 2024, about 200,340 new Melanoma cases were reported in the US, of which about 100,640 invasive and 99,700 non-invasive (in situ) were, while around 7,990 people died. At the same time, according to the estimated 2025 data, about 104,960 new invasive melanoma cases and 107,240 melanoma in situ cases may be registered in the US, which has predicted about 8,430 deaths.

The main reason for the high skin cancer to the white people is the lack of melanin present in their skin. This deficiency makes them more sensitive to DNA losses from UV radiation. Also, the continuous effect of genetic factor and sun rays increases the risk of cancer. Researches have also proved that more than 80 percent of melanoma cases are directly related to UV exposure.

Former Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke is once again in the headlines. Actually, he recently underwent another surgery of his nose due to skin cancer. Please tell that Michael Clarke caused this problem due to playing cricket for hours in the sun. In such a situation, the question arises whether spending more time in the sun causes skin cancer and how dangerous this disease is? Let us know about its symptoms, tests and prevention methods.

Michael Clarke did this post

Michael Clarke posted a post on Instagram on 29 August (Friday). He told that due to skin cancer, he has undergone sixth nose surgery. He wrote that skin cancer cases are very common in Australia. Today I got another lump of my nose. I am reminding everyone that keep checking your skin. Significantly, in the year 2006, Michael Clarke came to know about the disease for the first time. He had this problem due to playing in the sun for hours on the cricket field. Now at the age of 44, Clarke is once again fighting this disease.

Why is skin cancer more in Australia?

Cricketers like Michael Clarke have to stay in the bright sunlight for hours during the match. According to doctors, this is why Clarke got skin cancer. Three knots were taken out of his forehead during 2019, which were non-lanse skin cancer. Now there is surgery on the nose. Clarke says that the rays of the sun are very fast in Australia, so there are the highest number of skin cancer cases.

Why is skin cancer?

Skin cancer is caused by abnormal increase in skin cells. The biggest reason for this is the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. When we live in the sun for a long time, these rays damage the skin DNA. This causes cells to become cancer out of control. Like Clarke, who lived in the sun while playing cricket, such people are more in danger. Other reasons include fair skin, family history, weak immunity system and contact with chemicals etc. Tanning beds or artificial UV lights can also be the cause of cancer. The ozone layer is thin in Australia, due to which the risk of UV rays is high. This is the reason why skin cancer cases are very high in Australia.

How many types of skin cancer is there?

There are three types of skin cancer. Of these, basal cell carcinoma is the most common, which increases gradually. At number two, Squamus Cell Carcinoma comes, which is in the upper layer of the skin. At the same time, the third melanoma is cancer, which is the most dangerous and spreads rapidly. Clarke has mostly occurred non-cylindanoma type cancer, which is less dangerous, but may repeatedly repeat.

Symptoms of skin cancer

Symptoms of skin cancer seem to be small at the beginning, but ignoring causes a bigger danger. If a new lump or spot is increasing on the skin, then there is a need to pay attention. Apart from this, changes in color, shape or shape of old sesame, not healing wounds, bleeding from itching area are also symptoms of skin cancer. If you see such signs, then see a doctor, because 95 % cases are cured by quick detection.

These tests detect skin cancer

The best way to detect skin cancer is regular checkup. In this, the disease is detected by doing visual exam, dermoscopy, biopsy etc. If you spend more time in the sun, then skin checkup should be done once a year.

How to rescue?

If you want to avoid skin cancer, then less sunlight should come out in the sun. If it is necessary to go in the sun, then sunscreen should be used. Also, full sleeve clothes, heads and glasses should be worn. Due to tanning, the risk of skin cancer increases.

Also read: If the kidney damage is done, then these 5 symptoms are seen as soon as they wake up in the morning, 99 % people do ignorant
