An era has ended for the world of Urdu literature. Internationally renowned poet Tahir Faraz, who ruled millions of hearts with his velvety voice and spiritual poetry, died in Mumbai on Saturday. He was 72 years old. As soon as the news of his demise spread, there was a wave of mourning from Rampur to his fans and literary world all over the world.

According to the information received, Tahir Faraz was in Mumbai with his family for the last few days. He was staying there to attend a Nikah ceremony and in connection with his daughter’s operation. On Saturday morning he suddenly felt severe pain in his chest. He was immediately taken to the nearest hospital, but despite all the efforts of the doctors, he could not be saved. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son. His last rites will be performed in Mumbai only.

Born in Badaun, Sanwari Shayari in Rampur

Born on 29 June 1953 in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, Tahir Faraz had a deep connection with poetry since childhood. His father also used to go to Nashistas (seminars), where little Tahir used to recite his ghazals in Tarannum. At the age of just 14, he composed his first complete ghazal. After Intermediate, he came to his maternal home in Rampur and stayed here. In Rampur, he got the company of stalwarts like Dr. Shauk Asri and Diwakar Rahi, which enhanced his talent.

Tahir Faraz was not only a poet but also an excellent lyricist and ‘brand’. The lines from his ghazal still remain on people’s lips:

“I wish there was a scene like this,

“Your head would have been on my shoulders.”

He represented India in dozens of countries including America, Britain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Kuwait. The magic of his voice was such that big companies like T-Series recorded his albums.

Former member of Sault Public Library, Kashif Khan, expressed deep grief over his demise and said, “Tahir Faraz’s passing is not just the passing of one person, but is the end of a golden chapter of Urdu poetry. He was the bearer of that glorious tradition of Rampur, where there are footprints of stalwarts like Ghalib and Daag. With his passing, words have become orphans.”
