The centuries-old customs of Afghanistan, who have always put women behind, are proving to be painful for women once again. Among the same customs of Afghanistan, in today’s time, it has also ensured that even after deadly earthquake and tremendous afteroxy, women are either rescued or not saved at all. The terrible earthquake in the country a few days ago transformed hundreds of buildings into a pile of debris. The tremors of this earthquake were so intense and dangerous, due to which at least 2,200 people have died so far.

Men ban on touching women in Afghanistan

Because in Afghanistan, strict restrictions have been imposed on men touching women. In such a situation, women who were stuck in the debris in the absence of female rescuers who had somehow survived, but still they were not being pulled out of the rubble. However, the dead women were being pulled out of their clothes.

Four years ago, the Taliban implemented several stringent sanctions on women after taking over power in Afghanistan again. Now, apart from the debris spread after the devastation caused by the earthquake in many parts of the country, the Taliban’s sexual rules are affecting relief and rescue operations.

No rescue worker helped women

According to a New York Times report, Bibi Ayesha said that she gathered us in a corner and then forgot us about us. The earthquake in Bibi Ayesha’s village Inlukak in Kunar province shook the hilly areas of eastern Afghanistan on Sunday (August 31, 2025). The first relief and rescue personnel reached the area after about 36 hours of the devastation caused by the earthquake.

According to the report, no one helped women, nor did they ask what they want nor did anyone move towards them. While the emergency teams were taking out the injured men and children immediately, many other women and girls, including 19 -year -old Ayesha, were pushed to shore, some of which were covered in blood. But many dead women were pulled out through their clothes.

Afghanistan Taliban Moral Law: During the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, the personal freedom of the people is rapidly reduced. Moral Law, who came into force in August 2023, almost eliminated freedom related to personal life, religious conduct and living in the country. The law implemented by the Ministry of Vice and Virtue (Ministry of Virtue and Prevention of Vice) includes many types of ban. These include restrictions on women speaking at public place, punishment for not covering face, shaving of men and banning music in wedding ceremony etc.

The United Nations report states that in the first 6 months after the implementation of Moral Law, many people were detained only for having a beard length and modern hairstyle. Special emphasis was laid on religious conduct and collective prayers during Ramadan in the Taliban. At that time, the men who did not go to the mosque were also detained.

Women and businesses
These moral laws have made the already implemented education, employment and dress code sanctions more rigid on women. The United Nations report says that the impact of this law is not limited to men only. Due to this law, private education centers are being closed. Hirdressor and tailor working people are getting badly affected. Restaurants and wedding ceremonies are being controlled. Due to all this, there is a huge decline in income and employment opportunities of common citizens. According to the World Bank, Afghanistan may lose $ 1.4 billion every year due to the sanctions imposed on women.

Taliban government’s side
Taliban leader Hibetullah Akhundzada said in a message given at the end of Ramadan last month that his aim is to create a society free from corruption and evil. According to him, it is necessary to save the future generations from being misled by eliminating bad moral conduct.

According to spokesperson Saif ur Rehman Khyber, the ministry is not only implementing the law, but is also addressing the complaints of the people. He claims that he is committed to both Islam and human rights.
