Trump Tariff: Even after the US Supreme Court’s decision declaring tariffs illegal, President Donald Trump is coming out with new orders. Now he has announced to impose 126 percent tariff on solar imports from India. America believes that India is unfairly subsidizing solar manufacturing.

Tariff increased on Indonesia and Laos also

America believes that with the help of the Indian government (by providing cheap loans, tax exemption or concession on electricity), panels made in India are being sold cheaply in America. Due to this, American companies are facing difficulties in competing with them and they are incurring losses.

America wants to protect its domestic manufacturers from the flood of cheap imports. To give them a level playing field, America has also increased solar tariffs on Indonesia and Laos. Now the tariff on solar panels or cells coming from Indonesia will be 143 percent as compared to 86 percent earlier. At the same time, Laos will have to pay 81 percent tariff. Now the question arises that why did America decide to increase solar tariffs on these three countries?

Reason for decision for America

The first reason for this is that American investigation has found that the governments of India, Indonesia and Laos are unfairly giving subsidies to their solar manufacturers. Due to this, the companies here are able to sell their products in the American markets at lower prices, due to which the domestic companies of America are incurring losses.

Another big reason is that after America imposed tariffs on solar cells made in China, Chinese companies are sending their products to America through other countries so that they can avoid the restrictions imposed on them. Earlier many Chinese companies decided to shift their production to Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. When duty was imposed on these countries, production shifted again. This time India, Indonesia and Laos were selected.

In the first half of 2025, these three countries accounted for 57 percent of all US solar-module imports. In view of this surge in solar exports, American industry groups (Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and Trade) filed a petition. His argument was that due to foreign subsidies, there is no equal competition in the market.

What will be the effect of the decision?

Due to the imposition of solar tariffs, imported panels in America are going to be very expensive. The price of Indian solar panels will more than double in America after the 126 percent tariff hike. This may affect the prices of homes and commercial solar installations.

Citigroup analysts say that heavy solar tariffs can completely drive Indian manufacturers out of the US markets. About 95 percent of India’s total solar exports reached the American markets. The loss of this market could lead to a major decline in the income of Indian companies.

This step taken by America is very sensitive for India because Trump has recently signed a bilateral trade deal with the aim of reducing the economic conflict between the two countries.

Trump Tariff: President Donald Trump held a press conference 3 hours after the US Supreme Court’s decision to cancel the tariffs. During this he said that there will be no change in the trade deal with India. Trump said that India will continue to pay the already decided tariff on it, while America will not give any tariff. Under the trade deal between America and India, America had said to impose a tariff of 18 percent on the import of Indian goods, which is less than the 50 percent tariff imposed earlier.

However, the interesting thing here is that after the US Supreme Court considered the tariffs imposed by Trump as illegal, what Trump said about India seems surprising. That too when after the court’s decision, Trump announced a global tariff of 10 percent on the world.

What did Trump say on trade deal with India?

When asked in the press conference about the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision on the trade deal between India and America, Trump said, “Nothing will change.” They will keep paying tariffs and we will not pay tariffs. There was a deal with India to give tariffs and they will continue to give tariffs. It is not like before. I think Prime Minister Modi is a very nice gentleman, a great person in fact, but he is much smarter on America than the people he was against. They were looting us, India, so we made a deal with India. This is a fair deal now and we are not paying them tariffs and they are paying tariffs. We counterattacked a bit.

Will the tariff on India be reduced?

However, meanwhile, there are also reports that after the decision of the Supreme Court, the partners doing trade deals with America will have to face only 10 percent tariff. Even if a higher tariff rate was agreed upon under the earlier deal. In such a situation, this applies to India also.

Meanwhile, quoting a White House official, AFP said in its report that the global tariff of 10 percent is temporary because the Trump administration can adopt legal maneuvers to implement the higher tariff rate already decided.

Trump Tariff: The US Supreme Court on Friday canceled Trump’s tariffs, calling them illegal. Giving the verdict by a majority of 6-3, the court said that under the Constitution, only the Parliament has the right to impose tariff or tax. The President cannot impose tariffs arbitrarily. This decision given by the US Supreme Court is a matter of relief for many people, from whom Trump has so far collected tariffs worth billions of dollars.

What is IEEPA?

Trump imposed huge tariffs on countries around the world under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 from April 2025. This Act is such an ‘economic weapon’ for America, using which it can break the economic back of any country without fighting a war.

Under this, if the President feels that any country is a threat to America’s security or its economy, then he can use this law by using emergency. Through this, business and transactions of any country can be banned. The US Supreme Court said that the President cannot arbitrarily increase tariffs on any country using this law, he only has the right to stop transactions.

Trump announced 10 percent global tariff

Trump strongly criticized this decision of the US Supreme Court. However, shortly after this decision, Trump announced the imposition of 10 percent global tariff on the world. Quoting a White House official, BBC said in its report that with the new decision for Trump, now global tariff will be imposed under Section 122 on all the countries of the world like India and European Union which have trade deals with America. It is clear from this that in the future, the 18 percent tariff imposed on India will be converted into 10 percent.

What about the money collected so far on behalf of tariff?

However, now the biggest question comes that after the decision of the conservative-majority court, will Trump refund the tariffs collected so far? After the court’s decision, the tariffs imposed earlier by Trump are now being considered illegal. Trump earned $175 billion from tariff revenue. The court did not talk on the issue of refund, but experts say that the lower courts will decide on it in the coming months.

Analysts Carsten Brzeski and Julian Geib of ING, an organization that looks after banking work for big companies in America, said that it is expected to be processed by the US Court of International Trade. He says that the refund money will not come automatically. If an importer wants their money back, they will have to file their own separate case. However, this process has also started now. More than 1,000 companies are involved in this legal battle. Due to this decision of the court, the US government may have to face refund claims worth billions of dollars.

The US Supreme Court banned Donald Trump’s tariffs on February 20, 2026. That means now the tariff will not be valid on any country in the world. On this decision of the Supreme Court, Trump in the press conference described this decision as extremely disappointing and said that he is ashamed of some members of the Supreme Court of the United States, and also criticized their decision. Trump said that till now he had been treading very carefully so as not to upset the courts. But now they have other options also.

Alternative measures will be used on tariffs

Trump is continuously attacking the judges who ruled against him in the tariff case and is arguing that he has won the presidential election, so the judges should not rule against him. Trump said on the judges, ‘They are very undemocratic and not loyal to our Constitution.’

Donald Trump said alternative measures will be used on tariffs after the US Supreme Court struck down his global tariff policy, indicating that his administration will pursue other options to advance its trade agenda.

Trump claimed that he can impose measures like imposing a complete ban or stopping trade with a particular country. However, he also said that under the court’s decision, they ‘cannot impose any fine’. His statements indicate a possible escalation in trade policy and renewed tensions with global partners.

Only the US Parliament has the right to impose tariffs: Court

The US Supreme Court has canceled President Donald Trump’s global tariff on February 20, 2026. The court has declared the tariffs imposed on other countries illegal. This means that the 18% reciprocal tariff imposed on India has also now been declared illegal. The Supreme Court, while giving its verdict with a majority of 6-3, said that under the Constitution, only the Congress (US Parliament) has the right to impose taxes and tariffs, not the President.

The court said that Trump misused the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which allows to control some international transactions in a national emergency, but not to impose tariffs on such a large scale.

IEEPA law does not allow President to impose tariffs: Court

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion on this decision. Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch and the court’s three liberal judges agreed with him. The dissenting judges included Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh. The court clarified that a 1977 law like IEEPA does not give the President the power to impose such broad tariffs.

Earlier, Trump had said regarding the hearing on tariffs that if he lost the case, the country would be ruined. This decision of the court is being considered a big blow to Trump’s economic policies.

Will Trump return the tariff money?

So far, the Trump administration has levied tariffs of more than $175 billion. After the decision of the Supreme Court, now this amount may have to be returned. However, no decision has been taken yet on refund. The Trump administration had earlier said that if the case was lost, trade agreements with many countries may have to be withdrawn and huge refunds may have to be paid.

Tariff game started 10 months ago

In April 2025, citing national security, Trump had imposed heavy tariffs i.e. import duties on goods coming from many countries of the world. Tariff means that more tax is imposed on goods coming from a country, so that it becomes expensive and domestic companies benefit.

The US Supreme Court has declared Trump’s tariffs illegal, after which President Donald Trump’s first reaction has come to light. Trump has condemned the Supreme Court’s decision and called it shameful. However, till now no formal comment has come from the White House on this decision.

NBC News quoted sources as saying that the US President was meeting with a group when the Supreme Court’s decision regarding tariffs came. Terming this decision as shameful, he told the people present there that he had an alternative plan.

What did the Supreme Court comment?

The court said in its decision that President Trump violated his jurisdiction while imposing tariffs on more than 100 countries. They imposed the tariffs under a law designed for use in national emergencies. According to the US Constitution, the right to impose taxes and tariffs rests not with the President but with the Congress (Parliament). However, Trump used tariffs as a major economic and foreign policy tool. He described these tariffs as important for American economic security. Apart from this, Trump had predicted that without tariffs the country would be ruined.

Court gave its decision on tariff by 6-3

This historic decision of the Supreme Court has come by 6-3. Trump is the first President who imposed tariffs on more than 100 countries citing an emergency law of the 1970s. Not only this, he also made trade deals with many countries by threatening tariffs. The word ‘tariff’ is not mentioned anywhere in this law. Writing the decision on behalf of the majority, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said that this law does not give the President the authority to impose tariffs.

What will be Trump’s next step?

This matter first went to the lower courts, from where Trump got a setback. After that the Trump administration had approached the Supreme Court. Now here too Trump has had to face defeat. Now it remains to be seen what Trump’s next step will be to defend the tariffs.

Amidst Donald Trump’s announcement of reducing the tariff on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent, an American MP has made a big claim. A senior US lawmaker has said that President Donald Trump is looking for excuses to impose huge tariffs on India for buying Russian oil and has urged Trump to immediately withdraw this policy.

MP Brad Sherman wrote in a post on social media on Wednesday (February 19, 2026), ‘President Trump is looking for an excuse to impose excessive tariffs on India.’ Sherman, a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives, said that Trump’s claim that duty was imposed on India for the import of Russian oil.

He said that Hungary buys 90 percent crude oil from Russia but America did not impose any duty on it. China is Russia’s biggest oil buyer, there is no restriction on it either, although America has taken action against it for other reasons. Sherman said, ‘India buys only 21 percent of its crude oil from Russia, yet our ally was targeted. President Trump should change this policy immediately.

The US and India had announced earlier this month that they had agreed to the outline of an interim trade-related agreement. Along with this, Trump issued an executive order and removed the 25 percent punitive duty imposed on India for buying oil from Russia. US President Trump mentioned India’s commitment to stop importing oil directly or indirectly from Russia and buy American energy products. Under this trade agreement, America will reduce the reciprocal duty rate on India from 25 percent to 18 percent.

Kremlin’s first reaction to President Donald Trump’s claims regarding India-US trade deal has emerged. He says that no official information has been received from India regarding stopping the purchase of Russian crude oil.

Meanwhile, regarding the India-US trade deal, Trump claimed that India has agreed to stop purchasing Russian crude oil. According to Trump, in return America will reduce the reciprocal tariff imposed on Indian products from 25 percent to 18 percent. It will also eliminate the additional 25 percent tariff imposed on Russian oil purchases.

Kremlin’s first reaction to Trump’s claim

In an interview given to news agency Reuters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the strategic partnership between India and Russia is of paramount importance. However, Dmitry Peskov said that he has not received any official information regarding stopping the purchase of Russian oil from India.

India is the largest buyer of Russian oil

India is the world’s third largest oil importer and consumer. After the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February 2022, India became the largest buyer of Russian oil. America wants that the income Russia is earning from selling oil should reduce and it will become difficult for it to raise money for the war in Ukraine. In November 2025, some Indian refiners had stopped imports under the pressure of sanctions imposed on Russia.

Russian oil purchases affected after sanctions

Due to strict sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union, the supply of Russian oil to India has slowed down, due to which imports have declined by about 22 percent to 1.38 million barrels per day in December 2025. Trump posted on social media that India has agreed to buy American goods worth $500 billion and stop importing crude oil from Russia. He described this step as part of strengthening economic relations with India.

Trade deal will open new opportunities: PM Modi

Since the start of the Ukraine war, the US has been urging its allies to reduce or end Russian energy purchases. At the same time, India had increased the purchase of Russian crude oil at concessional rates to meet domestic energy needs. On the India-US trade deal, PM Modi said, ‘When two big economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and opens up new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the trade deal signed with India and America. He claimed on Tuesday (2 February 2026) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been compromised (under pressure), hence he has signed a trade agreement with America. He also claimed in the Parliament complex that the Prime Minister has sold the country through this agreement and is afraid that the balloon of his image might burst.

PM Modi is under severe pressure: Rahul Gandhi

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, ‘For some reason or the other, Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed that agreement. There is tremendous pressure on PM Modi. He fears that the balloon of his image, which was built by spending thousands of crores of rupees, may burst. Actually the problem is not Naravane ji’s statement, it is a side show. The big thing is that the Prime Minister of India has become compromised. There was no change in the trade deal which was pending for four months and that trade deal was signed yesterday evening.

Government has sold the blood and sweat of farmers: Rahul Gandhi

He claimed, ‘The people of India have to think about who has compromised the Prime Minister and how. The farmers of India should understand that your hard work and blood and sweat has been sold by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this agreement. He has sold not just you but the country. Rahul Gandhi claimed that he was not being allowed to speak on the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha.

Congress furious over US Agriculture Minister’s statement

Referring to the statement by America’s Agriculture Minister Brooke Rollins, Congress targeted the central government. Brook Rollins said, ‘Now the products of American farmers will be sold in the Indian market. This will bring money to rural areas of America. Indian market is very important for American farmers. Trump has benefited America’s farmers with this deal. Congress described his statement as extremely worrying for India.

Indian farmers will suffer losses: Congress

Congress said, ‘It is clear from the statement of the US Agriculture Minister that the Modi government has made this deal ignoring the interests of Indian farmers. This will cause loss to farmers in India. Now they will have to compete with American farmers in their own country. This is a complete attack on the farmers of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should answer why he compromised the interests of the farmers of India?

Also read: ‘There is no compromise with agriculture and dairy sector…’, India stands firm on its point regarding trade deal with America.

America has reduced the tariff on India from 25 percent to 18 percent. Shortly after talking to PM Modi, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social and informed about the agreement on trade deal between India and America. He was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that India will no longer buy oil from Russia. The US President said that India will now buy more oil from Venezuela.

Trump said, ‘It was an honor for me to talk to Prime Minister Modi of India this morning. He is one of my closest friends and a powerful and respected leader of his country. We talked about a wide range of issues, including trade and ending the Russia-Ukraine war. India has agreed to stop purchasing oil from Russia as well as buy more oil from the US and Venezuela. This will help end the ongoing war in Ukraine, in which thousands of people are dying every week.

He said, ‘Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and with immediate effect at his request, we agreed to a trade deal between the United States and India. Under this, America will reduce the reciprocal tariff from 25 percent to 18 percent. India will also move towards reducing its tariff and non-tariff barriers against America to zero.

According to President Trump, Prime Minister Modi has also promised large-scale purchases from America under the ‘Buy American’ policy, which will include American energy, technology, agriculture, coal and other products worth more than $500 billion. Trump said that India-America relations will become stronger in the coming times and both the leaders are the ones who deliver.

India US Trade Deal: His MPs are unhappy with the attitude of US President Donald Trump who is threatening India with tariffs every day. Leaked audio of Republican Party MP Ted Cruz has surfaced, in which he is openly criticizing Trump’s policies. He also told that because of which people of Trump administration the trade deal between India and America is pending.

Ted Cruz said that Vice President JD Vance, White House trade advisor Peter Navarro and President Donald Trump are responsible for the delay in the trade agreement with India.

According to the report of Axios, Republican Party MP Ted Crood spoke to some party donors on a phone call and the audio of this conversation was leaked. In the audio, Ted Cruz held Peter Navarro and JD Vance responsible for the derailment of the India-US trade deal. He has also blamed Trump’s policies for the delay in the trade agreement with India.

Tariff policy may be made due to impeachment against Trump, US MP said
According to the report, this 10-minute leaked audio has been given by a source in the Republican Party. Last year, in the beginning and middle of 2025, Ted Cruz talked to some private donors, in which he is presenting himself as a traditional free-trade supporter and interventionist Republican. In this conversation, Ted Cruz, who is preparing for the 2028 presidential election, described Trump’s tariffs as fatal for the economy and said that this policy could also lead to impeachment against Trump.

Ted Cruz said that in April 2025, when Trump started imposing tariffs on some countries, Cruz and some lawmakers talked to the President. He urged Trump to take it back. Cruz told that this conversation continued till midnight, but its results were not good. During this, Trump shouted at him and also abused him.

Ted Cruz told Trump – impeachment can happen
In the recording, Ted Cruz can be heard saying that he had clearly warned Trump that if people’s 401(k) savings (bank balance) fell by 30 percent by November 2026 and inflation in the market (super market) increased by 10 to 20 percent, then every day would be challenging for the Republican Party. Due to this, Trump will lose both the House and the Senate and will have to face impeachment every week for the next year. Cruz told that Trump used abusive language on this and silenced him.

Ted Cruz told that he is fighting to get the White House to agree on a trade agreement with India. When a donor asked him who in the Trump administration was opposing it, Cruz said White House economic advisor Peter Navarro, JD Vance and sometimes Trump. Ted Cruz called JD Vance a protege (disciple) of conservative podcaster Carlson and said that both have similar views on foreign policy.
