Amidst the current political situation in Bangladesh, the announcement of elections is considered very important for the entire South Asia. Even before the 13th general elections to be held on February 12, there are clear indications that the country’s politics is moving towards a major change. Amidst the cold and dense fog, the political temperature of Bangladesh is continuously increasing and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) seems to be getting the maximum benefit from it.

Recently, a big opinion poll conducted by Eminence Associates for Social Development has revealed surprising results. In this survey, opinions of more than 20 thousand voters from all 300 parliamentary constituencies of the country were taken. According to the survey, about 70 percent people are in the mood to vote in favor of BNP, which is considered a big lead for the party. In comparison, Jamaat-e-Islami has got 19 percent support.

Relief news for Tariq Rehman

This opinion poll is no less than a big good news for BNP acting leader Tariq Rehman. The party is now preparing to formally make him the national president soon. BNP General Secretary Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, while talking to the media in Sylhet, has indicated that this decision can be taken in a day or two.

Election campaign can start from Sylhet

According to party sources, Tariq Rehman may start his election campaign from Sylhet. This is the same area from where late leader Khaleda Zia used to start her election campaigns. BNP is considering this step as very important emotionally and politically and is linking it to the heritage of the party.

Party formed from student movement did not get support

Another important thing has emerged in the results of the survey. The National Citizens Party (NCP), which emerged from the student movement against the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year, has received only 2.6 percent support. This makes it clear that the strength seen on the streets does not necessarily translate into electoral support.

Big dent in Awami League’s vote bank

The most surprising aspect of the opinion poll is that about 60 percent of the old supporters of Awami League now want to vote for BNP, while more than 20 percent of the voters seem to be leaning towards Jamaat-e-Islami.

Anti-India rhetoric in Bangladesh for the last few days has increased the distance between the two countries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached Dhaka on Wednesday (31 December 2025) to attend the funeral of Khaleda Zia. During this, he met Tariq Rahman, son of Khaleda Zia and acting president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). During the tension between the two countries, his visit is being considered very important from diplomatic point of view.

‘S Jaishankar’s visit should not be seen from the perspective of bilateral relations’

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tauhid Hussain has said that Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka should not be seen from the perspective of bilateral relations or politics. He also said that whether his visit will reduce the tension between the two countries or not will become clear only in the future. Mohammad Tauheed said that representatives of all South Asian countries including the Indian Foreign Minister had attended the funeral of Khaleda Zia.

‘S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh is a good sign’

According to the Dhaka Tribune report, he said, ‘Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh was short, but he attended the entire program and then left. This is a good sign. We should not make any more sense out of his visit than this. When Mohammed Tauheed was asked whether there was any personal meeting with S Jaishankar, he said that there was no scope for face-to-face discussion.

‘Khalida Zia’s image was good even in neighboring countries’

He said, ‘Another foreign guest was present there. The Speaker of Pakistan was also there and he also shook hands with him. These are matters of etiquette which everyone follows. There was no political discussion during their conversation. Referring to late BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the Foreign Affairs Advisor said that her image was good not only in Bangladesh but also in neighboring countries. He further said that it was natural for regional leaders to be present to condole his death.

Tariq Rahman is considered a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister in the parliamentary elections to be held on February 12 in Bangladesh. During his meeting with Rehman, Jaishankar expressed confidence that Zia’s vision and values will guide the development of the partnership between the two countries. Jaishankar said in his post on social media, ‘I called him Prime Minister <a title="Narendra Modi" href="https://www.abplive.com/topic/narendra-modi" data-type="interlinkingkeywords"Handed over Narendra Modi's letter. I expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Government of India and the public.'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled his association with former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia in a condolence letter written to Tariq Rahman, son of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. PM Modi expressed hope that the people of Bangladesh will continue to be inspired by shared values, democratic traditions and a deep sense of national unity.

Mentioned about meeting with Khaleda Zia
Expressing his condolences, PM Modi wrote in the letter that I remember well the meeting and discussions with Begum Sahiba in Dhaka in June 2015. She (Khalida Zia) was a leader of extraordinary determination and determination and achieved the distinction of being the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. PM Modi wrote that along with the development of Bangladesh, he also made many important contributions in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations.

What did PM Modi say in his condolence message?
PM Modi said in his condolence message that her (Khalida Zia) demise has created an irreparable void, but her vision and legacy will remain immortal. I am confident that his ideals will be carried forward in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and will continue to guide us in enriching the deep and historic partnership between India and Bangladesh and ensuring a new beginning.

Tariq Rehman is a strong contender for the post of PM.
Bangladesh’s three-time Prime Minister and BNP chief Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday (December 30) after a prolonged illness. Thousands of people attended his funeral in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday, including dignitaries from different countries. She was buried with state honors next to her husband Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Tariq Rehman, a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister in the elections to be held on February 12, is the eldest son of Khaleda Zia.

During the meeting with Tariq Rehman, Jaishankar acknowledged Zia’s contribution to democracy. He expressed hope over the rift in India-Bangladesh relations after the elections to be held in February. India is keeping a close eye on Dhaka’s growing closeness with Pakistan and its all-weather friend China.

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday (30 December 2025) at the age of 80. Following the tragic incident, her son Tariq Rehman took to Twitter to express his emotional feelings for his mother. He wrote, ‘My mother and BNP President Begum Khaleda Zia left us today after listening to the call of Allah.’ Tariq Rahman further wrote that Khaleda Zia was not just a political leader, but she was known as the mother of democracy and mother of Bangladesh. She struggled throughout her life to strengthen the democratic system of the country and stood firmly against dictatorship and oppression.

Tariq Rehman wrote that Khaleda Zia was a very affectionate, gentle and courageous mother for him. He always took care of his family inside the house, no matter how difficult the circumstances were. Even amidst political conflicts, her motherly love and compassion never diminished.

A life full of arrest, illness and struggle

Khaleda Zia faced repeated arrests, denial of treatment and constant political persecution throughout her life. Despite this, he never gave up. His personality remained calm but steadfast and strong. Khaleda Zia lost her husband and child for the country. After these personal sorrows, the people of Bangladesh became his family. Service to the country became his aim and direction of life.

Democratic legacy will always live on

In the statement, Tariq further wrote that Khaleda Zia has left behind a legacy of patriotism, sacrifice and struggle for democracy, which will continue to inspire the coming generations. His memory and contribution will always be recorded in the democratic history of Bangladesh.

Expressed gratitude for people’s love

Tariq Rehman wrote at the end of the post that on behalf of the family, I express my gratitude for the love, respect and condolences received from all over the country and the world. Khaleda Zia’s death is being seen as the end of an era in Bangladesh politics.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president Tariq Rahman on Thursday (December 25, 2025) appealed to the people to maintain peace. Presenting the vision of an inclusive society, he said that the country belongs to people of all religions, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.

Rehman said this while addressing party supporters for the first time after 17 years. Since the formation of the interim government in August last year, there have been many incidents against minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. Rahman told thousands of supporters after arriving on July 36 Expressway directly from Dhaka airport, ‘Now is the time for all of us to build the country together. This country belongs to the people of hills and plains, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. We want to create a safe Bangladesh, where every woman, man and child can go out of their home safely and come back safely.

The Hindu population in Bangladesh has faced several violent incidents after the ouster of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power in August last year. Recently, a 25-year-old Hindu laborer was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh city. India has expressed concern over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. On Monday, minority groups protested in Dhaka and accused the interim government of failing to stop persecution of minorities. Earlier, Rahman returned to Dhaka on Thursday after living in self-exile for more than 17 years, where he was given a warm welcome.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other party leaders welcomed Rahman at Hazrat Shahjalal Airport in Dhaka amid tight security. Rehman was also accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rehman and daughter Jaima Rehman. Rehman was living in London since 2008. He has been effectively leading the BNP since 2018 after the ill health of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. BNP has emerged as a major contender to gain power in the elections to be held in February, as former Prime Minister Hasina’s party Awami League has been banned from taking part in the elections.

Jamaat-e-Islami, which was an ally of the BNP during its tenure from 2001 to 2006, is now considered its main rival, as the interim government has banned the Awami League from contesting elections through an executive order under the country’s stringent anti-terrorism law.

Rehman’s return has come at a time when unrest has spread in the country after the assassination of prominent youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi, which has engulfed the entire Bangladesh. Hadi played an important role in ousting Hasina from power. Rahman, a leading contender to become the country’s next Prime Minister, symbolically marked his return to the country’s politics by standing barefoot on Bangladeshi soil soon after arriving at Shahjalal Airport.

Hours later, Rehman, 60, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, addressed his supporters and called for maintaining peace and stability in the country and presented a comprehensive plan to create an ‘inclusive Bangladesh’. Referring to American civil rights activist Martin Luther King’s famous quote ‘I have a dream’, Rahman said, ‘I have a plan for my countrymen and my country.’ Rahman said that he wants to create an inclusive Bangladesh, where people of every caste, creed and religion can live in a peaceful environment.

When the BNP had announced Rahman’s plan to return from London, Rahman had said, ‘Just as a child wants to be near his seriously ill mother in her time of distress, I want to return to Bangladesh.’ Rahman’s return to Dhaka has come at a time when Bangladesh-India relations are deteriorating rapidly. However, he did not make any direct mention of India in his address.

The BNP leader left the airport in a bulletproof bus. Before leaving the airport, Rehman thanked interim government head Muhammad Yunus in a phone conversation. Yunus had supported the arrangements made for their security and the organization of programs related to their return home.

In a video message shared by BNP, Rehman was seen saying, ‘On behalf of myself and my family, I express my gratitude to you. In particular, I express my gratitude for the steps taken for my safety. Rahman also mentioned the establishment of Bangladesh in 1971.

Referring to the fall of the Hasina-led government last year, he said, ‘Just as in 1971, people from all sections of society came together to protect the independence and sovereignty of this country, similarly in 2024 too people united and ousted the Sheikh Hasina government from power.’ About 4,000 soldiers, paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, policemen equipped with riot control equipment and plainclothes policemen were deployed in Dhaka to ensure Rehman’s security.

Tariq Rahman, the working president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and son of the country’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to the country on Thursday (25 December) after 17 years. His supporters gave him a grand welcome at the airport itself. After returning to Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman spoke on phone to Chief Advisor of the Interim Government Mohammad Yunus and inquired about his health.

While talking to Yunus, BNP Working President Tariq Rehman expressed his gratitude for the arrangements made by the government for his security. Tariq appreciated the steps taken to ensure the safety of himself and his family.

Political activities intensify regarding upcoming elections in the country
According to sources, the phone conversation between Tariq Rehman and Mohammad Yunus took place in a cordial atmosphere, in which the current political situation and personal discussion took place. This conversation of Tariq Rehman has taken place at a time when he has returned to his country after 17 years of exile and political activities have intensified in the country regarding the upcoming general elections.

Tariq Rahman’s return to his country is being considered an important development in the politics of Bangladesh, while the interim government is being cautious regarding security and law and order. Tariq Rehman announced on Thursday (25 December 2025) that he will visit the grave of his father and former military ruler General Ziaur Rehman on Friday. This program will start in the afternoon after Friday prayers. Rahman will pray for the peace of his father’s soul at the Samadhi site in Dhaka. After paying tribute to the founder of the party, he will leave for the National Martyrs Memorial located in Savar. Where he will lay a wreath in honor of the martyrs of the 1971 liberation war.

BNP largest party
Amidst the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, there is a lot of expectation and speculation about the arrival of Tariq Rahman, as he is being seen as the next possible Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Let us tell you that due to the ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, low popularity of NCP and Jamaat, BNP is currently the largest party in Bangladesh.

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina fiercely targeted the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus on Thursday (25 December 2025). He accused the Bangladesh government of committing atrocities against non-Muslims. Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina said that horrific incidents like brutal killing of religious minorities are coming to light under the Yunus government, which came to power illegally.

Sheikh Hasina was clearly referring to the incident of lynching of a Hindu youth Dipu Das by a mob in Bangladesh last week. In a message given on the occasion of Christmas, he accused the Yunus government of interfering in the freedom of people of all religions and communities to practice their respective religions.

‘Yunus government is torturing non-Muslims’

He said, “The interim government is committing unimaginable atrocities, especially against non-Muslims. During its rule, horrific incidents like brutal killing of religious minorities have also come to light. I have full confidence that the people of Bangladesh will not allow this dark period to continue much longer.” Sheikh Hasina expressed hope that Christmas will further promote the spirit of harmony and reconciliation between Christians and followers of other religions in Bangladesh.

She said, “On this auspicious occasion of Christmas, I wish happiness, peace and prosperity for all Christian brothers and sisters. There is hope for the end of the dark period and a new dawn of hope. Long live Bangladesh.”

Dipu Das was murdered and his body was set on fire.

In Bangladesh, Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death by a mob and later his body was set on fire. Initially it was said that he was killed on charges of blasphemy, but later the police clarified that they did not find any such evidence. Regarding this, there were demonstrations against Mohammad Yunus in many countries of the world including India.

Tariq Rahman appealed for peace to the people of Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina’s statement came at a time when Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president and former PM Khaleda Zia’s son Tariq Rahman addressed a huge public meeting in Dhaka on December 25. However, he did not directly take the name of Sheikh Hasina even once in his entire speech. He appealed to the people to maintain peace.

He said, ‘Bangladesh is a country where Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians all live equally. We want to build a secure Bangladesh. A country where if any woman, man or child leaves the house safely, he can return safely.
