The political dispute in Iran regarding the proposed peace agreement with America is deepening. After a TV interview of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the opposition of the fundamentalist groups of the country has come to the fore. Dozens of protesters demonstrated outside the Foreign Ministry office in the north-eastern city of Mashhad, chanting slogans such as ‘Araghchi resign’ and ‘Down with the insulter Araghchi’. The protesters are alleging that the proposed agreement is against Iran’s strategic interests and that the government has given excessive concessions to America.

Radical groups are opposing the peace agreement
Iran’s radical political groups say that the current terms of the proposed agreement with the US weaken Tehran’s strategic interests. They allege that this agreement could weaken Iran’s effective hold on the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one of its biggest strategic strengths.

Controversy increased after TV interview
The controversy escalated when Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview broadcast on state TV that the proposed agreement included a provision for lifting the US naval blockade. This blockade was imposed by America after the action taken by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi said that ‘governance of the Strait of Hormuz will never be the same’, although he also described it as part of Iran’s core deterrence strategy.

In an unconfirmed video going viral on social media, it has been claimed that people have gathered outside the Foreign Ministry headquarters in the capital Tehran. The protesters were seen there demanding ‘Araghchi resign’ and also the resignation of Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Ghalibaf is also playing the role of chief negotiator in this negotiation process.

Doubt remains on the timeline of the agreement
US President Donald Trump and Pakistan officials have claimed that this peace agreement can be finalized by Sunday and preparations are underway for the electronic signing ceremony. However, the Iranian government seems to be cautious about this deadline.

Iranian Foreign Ministry denies early agreement
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai rejected the possibility of an immediate agreement, saying ‘it will not happen tomorrow.’ However, he also indicated that the agreement could be finalized in the coming days.
