The promotion of teachers in Uttarakhand has been stopped after the Supreme Court’s decision to make the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory. This decision has affected more than 18 thousand teachers of basic and junior high school. In the case, the state government has decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court.

Following the order of the Supreme Court, the District Education Officers had sought clear guidelines from the Directorate of Education on the promotion of teachers. In response, the Directorate of Education has directed all the district officials to inform the teachers about the order of the Supreme Court and the decision of the state government.

Officials have asked for information for promotion

Director of Elementary Education Ajay Kumar Naudiyal said that officials of districts like Chamoli, Tehri Garhwal and Champawat have asked for information about promotion. In some districts, teachers have also started a sit-in demonstrations for promotion.

Supreme Court compulsory TET

Director of Elementary Education Ajay Kumar Naudiyal further said that the Supreme Court has made TET mandatory for all teachers since 1 September 2025, who have more than five years left during the service period, they will have to pass TET within two years. This rule will apply to both old and new teachers.

Promotion should not be banned till the decision of Supreme Court comes

At the same time, State President of Junior High School Teachers Association Vinod Thapa said that this rule of TET and promotion should not be applicable to teachers appointed before 2010-11, because TET was not applicable at that time and their appointment was valid. He said that the promotion should not be banned till the final decision of the Supreme Court.

In its historic judgment, the Supreme Court made it mandatory for all teachers teaching from class 1 to 8 to pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). This decision of the Supreme Court is creating a crisis for millions of teachers in Uttar Pradesh. This exam will be of a total of 500 marks, in which there will be no negative marking. It is also necessary to read the syllabus well for TET, because the merit of the basic level is found in it.

How will these exams be done?

These examinations will be conducted by UPESSC Prayagraj. The exam can be done in both online and offline methods, but has not yet been officially confirmed. It is expected that the admit cards will be uploaded on the website 10-15 days before the exam. For this, candidates will have to use registration number and date of births.
