Thailand Alcohol: In Thailand, there was a ban on the sale of alcohol between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. This rule lasted for more than 5 decades. However, in November 2025, the Thai government has slightly relaxed this afternoon restriction, which should provide relief to the tourism industry. But the question arises that why such a rule was made and what was the reason behind it. So let us know.

Why was this rule made

The roots of ban on liquor in the afternoon started spreading from 1972. At that time Thailand was ruled by military leadership. The administration believed that drinking alcohol without restriction during the day was affecting productivity. This effect was more on government employees. To ensure that officials remained focused during working hours, the government set a special no-sale time in the afternoon. While on paper it was a rule designed for the public welfare, on a larger scale the rule served as a means of strict workforce discipline.

maintain social order

Beyond workplace concerns, the government also saw the midday restriction as a way to maintain social order. Drinking during the day often led to public disturbances and minor criminal incidents. By limiting the availability of alcohol to certain hours, officials hoped to reduce the likelihood of such problems increasing.

Tourism pressures and changing attitudes

Now, as Thailand is becoming one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, the hospitality sector has started putting pressure to reconsider this rule. Tourists questioned the ban, and many businesses argued that the ban created confusion and hindered customer traffic. Initially there was a fear that lifting the ban might have an adverse impact on social discipline, but the government gradually realized that the afternoon ban was outdated in a country that is heavily dependent on tourism revenue.

Changes in November 2025

The Thai government conducted a review and implemented some necessary changes to this ban in November 2025. Permission has been given to resume the sale of liquor between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. This permission has been given to licensed hotels, resorts and entertainment venues. This decision has been presented as a step to support businesses and make Thailand more convenient for international travelers.

some new rules

Despite the exemption, some new rules have been made in the updated law. According to the new rules, if people are caught drinking alcohol during a predetermined time, they can still be fined, even if they have purchased the alcohol before. This has further increased the concern in the restaurant and bar community as business owners fear that this complex fine system may again put customers in trouble. Even though the policy has become soft, there is still a need for clarity in its implementation.

The Thai Constitutional Court has dismissed him from the post only after a one -year term, alleging violating moral standards against Thailand’s Prime Minister Partangatar Shinavatra. The Thai court says that the Prime Minister Partangatarn lacks qualification under the Constitution.

After the court order, now Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Fummatha Vachayachai and the current cabinet will oversee the government, until the new Prime Minister is selected in the country. Its date will be decided by the Chairman of the House.

Name of candidates for the post of Prime Minister

Out of the candidates declared before the 2023 elections in Thailand, 5 qualified candidates are remaining. 77 -year -old Chaikasem Neetisiri, former Justice Minister and Attorney General, said that he is ready to come forward for the post. Apart from this, the name of 58 -year -old Anutin Charvirakul is also coming out for the Prime Minister’s claim, who was the former Internal Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. His BhoomiJathai party formed an alliance with Partangatarn in June.

In Thailand, current Energy Minister Pirapan Sali Vivarta, former Deputy Prime Minister Jurin Laxnavisit and former Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha are also eligible contenders for the post. 71 -year -old Prayuth has retired from politics and is currently a royal advisor. Earlier, he was also a general and in 2014 he led the coup against the previous Fu Thai government.

This is the process of selection of candidates

Now before becoming a candidate, the House requires the support of at least 50 MPs. After that, more than half of the existing 492 members of the lower house, ie 247 votes are required to become Prime Minister. If the candidate fails for the qualification of the post, then the meeting of the House will be called again and the same process will be repeated. There is no time limit for this process.
