Big news has come for schools and students across the country. The method of education is going to change, the subjects are going to change, and now everything from language to skills is being linked with new thinking. A new syllabus has been released by CBSE, which can change the picture of school education in the coming years.

This change has been made according to NEP 2020. Under the new system, it will now be necessary to study a third language from class 6. Till now students used to study two languages, but now it will be necessary to learn three languages. Its impact will also be visible in the Class 10 board exams of 2031, when the third language will be included as a compulsory subject.

CBSE President Rahul Singh has made it clear that this rule will not be applicable to class 9 students as of now. Third language books will be started for class 6 this year. These students will take the board exams in 2031, then this entire system will be implemented.

An important thing in the new system is that students will have to study at least two Indian languages. English will now be considered a foreign language. That means students will not be able to choose any foreign language along with English as second or third language. CBSE is preparing to make study material related to third language available online this month, so that schools and students can prepare on time.

Now skills are also necessary in class 9 and 10

In the new curriculum, emphasis has been laid not only on language but also on skills and arts. Now arts education, vocational education and physical education will be compulsory in classes 9 and 10. Books will also be brought for art and physical education. This year, class 10 students will be evaluated in these subjects at the school level. Vocational education will also become a compulsory subject from 2027-28, in which there will be annual or board examination. This means that along with studies, students will also learn some useful skill.

New languages ​​also included

CBSE has also included languages ​​like Dogri, Maithili, Konkani and Santhali in class 9. With this, now the board will give the option of 22 prescribed Indian languages. This step has been taken to promote Indian languages.

Computer Thinking and Artificial Intelligence

Keeping up with the times, CBSE has also decided to make Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence mandatory in classes 9 and 10. Currently these will be taught in the form of modules and evaluation will take place at the school level. From 2029 it will become a compulsory subject for class 10 board exams. These subjects are also being introduced from classes 3 to 8.

Mathematics and Science at two levels

From the session 2026-27, mathematics and science will be taught at two levels in class 9. Students who choose the advanced level will have to do additional study and also take a separate exam of 25 marks of one hour. Some relaxation has been given in the language rules for CBSE schools running abroad. There, instead of two Indian languages, one Indian language will be necessary.

Roadmap till 2031

According to CBSE Academic Director Pragya Singh, this curriculum has been designed keeping in mind the planning till 2031. Third language books will be prepared in collaboration with NCERT.
