Before the first phase of assembly elections to be held in West Bengal, all the parties have intensified the campaigning. The first phase of voting is on 23rd April, before which a shocking report has come out. According to ADR (Association for Democratic Reforms), almost one out of every four candidates in the first phase has a criminal case registered against them. The same report has revealed that almost every fifth candidate is a millionaire.

According to the ADR report, out of 1475 candidates, 23 percent (345) have criminal cases registered against them. Serious cases are registered in 20 percent (294). Cases of attempt to murder are registered against more than 100 candidates. There are six candidates who have rape allegations against them.

Murder related cases against 19 candidates

The most shocking thing in the report is that there are 19 candidates who have cases related to murder. 105 are accused of attempt to murder. There are 98 candidates against whom cases of crimes against women are registered. Among the major parties, the maximum number of cases are against BJP candidates. 106 out of 152 candidates have reported these cases. In the report, 66 seats were described as ‘red alert constituencies’. This is the area where 3 or more candidates have criminal cases registered against them.

How many candidates are millionaires?

In the first phase, there are 309 candidates who are millionaires. The average wealth of all was estimated at Rs 1.34 crore. If we look at the party, TMC is at the forefront in average assets. The average asset of their candidates is Rs 5.70 crore. BJP is at second place with Rs 2.57 crore and Congress is at third place with Rs 2.06 crore. It has been told in the report that 72 percent of TMC, 47 percent of Bharatiya Janata Party, 24 percent of CPM and 33 percent of Congress candidates are those whose assets are more than Rs 1 crore.
