Measurement of land in India has always been an interesting subject. Even today in villages and rural areas, people maintain land records in local units like Bigha, Kattha, Dhur, Mandi and Hasa. But most people do not know exactly how much land is there in a Katha or Mandi. Actually, the value of these units varies from state to state. This is the reason why a katha from one place can be bigger or smaller than a katha from another place. Let us know what is the real meaning of words like Katha, Parta and Mandi and how they are used in measuring land.

how much land in katha

First of all let’s talk about catechu. It is the traditional unit of measurement of land in many parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. But its measurement is different in every state. For example, in Bihar one katha is considered to be approximately 1,361.25 square feet, whereas in Assam its size is approximately 2,880 square feet. At the same time, in West Bengal and Bangladesh, one katha is equal to only 720 square feet. That means if someone has 1 katha of land in Assam, it can be equal to about 2 katha of Bihar.

how many katha in one bigha

Now let us know how many katthas are there in one bigha. Generally 20 kattas together make 1 bigha. However, this rule is also not the same in every state. This measurement is generally adopted in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. That means if someone has 1 bigha of land, then there will be approximately 20 katthas in it.

how much land in the market

Now let’s talk about the market. The word Mandi seems to be mostly associated with markets, but in many places it is also used as a unit of measuring land. Generally, 80 markets are considered in 1 acre. This means if you have 1 acre of land, it will be equal to 80 mandis. Similarly, if someone has 4 acres of land, it will be equal to 320 mandis. Whereas, if you want to convert mandi into acres, then the number of mandi has to be divided by 80. That means 160 mandis equal to 2 acres of land.

what is the meaning of part

Now comes the part. A share is not a measurement unit of land, rather it represents the division of a property or land. This part may be equal in size or may vary as per requirement or agreement. Overall, Kattha, Hasa and Mandi are important land related units of the Indian rural system. In villages, people still use these traditional units in conversation.
