Wrong Side Driving Rules: Lakhs of vehicles run on the roads of Delhi every day and a little carelessness can put many lives in danger. Recently a similar case came to light in Cantt police station area. Where a young man drove a car on the wrong side near the Hanuman Mandir red light, which created a great danger for the vehicles coming from the front.

This time the traffic police did not just issue the challan. In fact, an FIR was also registered. It is being claimed that this is the country’s first case on wrong side driving. Earlier only challan now direct FIR

On January 3, Aman, a resident of Kusumpur Pahari, was going in his car. He started driving on the wrong side near Hanuman Mandir red light in Cantt area. Due to this, the vehicles coming from the straight direction had to apply brakes suddenly and a major accident was averted. Police registered a case on the complaint of ASI Sunil Kumar. Investigation revealed that Aman neither had a driving license nor car insurance.

Police registered an FIR against the accused under section 281 of BNS. Along with this, sections 3/181, 146 and 196 of the Motor Vehicle Act have also been imposed. Till now, in most cases only challan was issued for driving on the wrong side. But in this case the police considered it to be serious negligence and took criminal action. Officials say that when wrong side driving poses a direct threat to the lives of others. So now FIR can also be registered.

How much can be the punishment?

Section 281 of BNS pertains to causing danger to life by rash and negligent driving. Earlier this section was 279 in IPC. If found guilty under this law, the punishment can be jail term up to 6 months, fine up to Rs 1000 or both. Apart from this, separate action is taken under the Motor Vehicle Act. Generally first time challan for wrong side driving is up to Rs 5000. If caught again, there is a provision of fine up to Rs 10,000 and license suspension.

If the driver does not have a license. So there is a different punishment under section 3/181. If there is no insurance, sections 146 and 196 are imposed. In which there is a provision of fine and even jail. Police clearly say that now wrong side driving will not be considered a minor mistake. If this creates danger on the road, then an FIR will be filed along with the challan.

answer- Supreme Court Judge Abhay S. The bench of Oka asked the Central Government and the National Highway Authority of India i.e. NHAI whether in India, like abroad, pedestrians can be made a rule to walk on the right of the road. The court directed both sides to give detailed answers with all the facts and data by 10 November.

The Supreme Court also reminded that it had instructed to remove traffic control and road encroachment on 21 May 2025, but it did not work. The court has asked whether a ‘ride walking system’ can be implemented in a densely populated country like India.
