TRAI New Rule: In view of the ever increasing problem of spam calls and fraudulent messages in the country, the Indian Telecom Regulator has issued strict instructions to the telecom companies. Now there will be no scope for postponing action as soon as any suspicious number is identified.

Under the order issued on February 27, all telecom operators have been asked to take immediate action on suspicious activities by making their AI and machine learning systems more effective. The objective is clear: a swift and concrete ban on digital fraud.

It is mandatory to share the information of suspicious number caught by AI within 2 hours
According to the new rules, if a company’s AI system considers a mobile number suspicious, then that information will have to be shared with the other operator concerned within a maximum of two hours. This entire process will be done through Blockchain based DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platform due to which the records will remain secure and tamper-proof.

This will ensure that monitoring of suspicious numbers starts without waiting for complaints. Also, in such cases, telecom companies will have to take necessary action within 30 days.

Both calling and receiving operators are responsible
Now the responsibility will not be on only one company. The network from which the suspicious call was made and the network on which the call was received will have to take action together. The AI ​​system will identify suspicious activities at the call line identification (CLI) level itself, making it easier to identify fake callers.

Number will be blocked on repeated complaints
If five or more complaints are filed against a mobile number within 10 days, the operator concerned will have to take immediate action. Such numbers can be blocked temporarily or permanently to prevent further fraud. This step has been taken specifically to curb cases like UPI fraud, fake bank messages, loan offers and fake KYC updates.

What will be the impact on mobile users?
There are more than one billion mobile subscribers in India and a large number of them have been troubled by spam calls and fake messages. Many people have also become victims of fraud related to banking and digital payments.

With the implementation of new rules, it is expected that cases of digital fraud will reduce due to AI-based faster monitoring and strict action. This can provide a more secure and reliable telecom experience to ordinary consumers.
