Now if you get a call from an unknown number, there is no need to panic! Soon the caller’s name will appear on your mobile screen — that too without any third-party app. Telecom Regulator TRAI and Department of Telecom (DOT) have jointly taken this step to prevent cases like fraud, threats and financial frauds through mobile calls. In this new facility, the same name of the caller will be visible which he had given in his ID proof while getting the SIM card. That means this data will come directly from the official records of the telecom companies. This will be the default service, but if a user does not want his name to be visible to others, he will be able to deactivate it. TRAI had already tested this system in Mumbai and Haryana circles. However, customers who have turned on the Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) feature — such as government officials, intelligence agency personnel and VIPs — will not see the name when a call is made to their number. This new system is a big step towards making mobile networks secure and transparent.

It will now be easier for mobile users to identify spam, junk and marketing calls. Actually, now along with the number, the name of the caller will also be visible on the calling screen. For this, the Department of Telecommunications and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have instructed telecom companies to start this service in any circle within a week. As soon as this service starts, the name as well as the number of the caller will start appearing.

Fraud will be controlled

The name visible on the caller screen will be the same as the user mentioned in his ID while purchasing the mobile number. This will be a default feature and if a user does not want to use it then he will have to deactivate it. Let us tell you that telecom companies have conducted trials regarding this service in Mumbai and Haryana last year.

TRAI accepted the advice of Department of Telecommunications

In February last year, TRAI had recommended this service named ‘Calling Name Presentation’ to the Department of Telecommunications. TRAI had said that it should be activated only when the user receiving the call requests for it. Responding to this, the Department of Telecommunications told TRAI that this service should be the default. If a user does not want to use it then he can deactivate it. TRAI has accepted this advice of the department.

Fraud calls can be controlled

This step of TRAI and Department of Telecommunications is expected to curb fraud calls. Now even before the user picks up the call, he will know whether someone he knows is calling or an unknown person is trying to contact him. In this way people will not fall into the trap of hackers and scammers and will be safe from cyber crimes.

Every day one or the other call comes in which it is said, “Your KYC is closed”, “ATM will be blocked”, “Do you want to get a loan approved?” And then as soon as you click on any link, money is lost from the account. But TRAI has started a big action plan, so that people can be protected from spam calls and cyber fraud. In the 9th Joint Committee of Regulators (JCoR) meeting held in Delhi on Thursday, TRAI along with RBI, SEBI, MeitY, NPCI and many ministries took many important decisions regarding digital security. Big companies like Google, Meta, GSMA and COAI also participated in this meeting. The main objective of the meeting was to protect users from fraud and make the system clean.

What will change after this meeting?

Now bank calls will come only from the number “1600” – TRAI has decided that now banks, finance and insurance companies will call only from numbers starting with 1600. Earlier this series was limited to some banks, rest of the companies used to call from old 140 or mobile number. Thugs used to take advantage of this. Now it has been decided to bring everyone into this series. Meaning, if no call is coming from “1600” then understand that he is not a bank person but a fraudster.

Links sent in SMS will now be pre-verified. Companies will now have to whitelist their URLs, app links, OTT links and callback numbers with TRAI in advance. This will expose fake websites or apps like “click and get rewards”.

Blacklist will also be public- TRAI and telecom companies will now release the list of those companies which have been caught in spamming or fraud. That means the names of the thugs will now be visible directly on the website.

OTP system will be more secure- TRAI is now implementing security features like captcha and real-time verification so that it is not easy to steal someone’s account or data.

TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti says that maintaining trust in the digital world is most important. The steps taken today will strengthen both the security and transparency of users.

That means now is the time to say goodbye to fake calls. Soon, when you get a call from “1600” on your phone, understand that it is from the bank and not from some fraudster.

Digital fraud scam: India is moving towards digital economy rapidly, but with this, cases of digital fraud have also increased to dangerous levels. The thugs are now trapping people in their trap using new technical methods and looting crores of rupees. The government and the RBI are constantly taking steps, but there are challenges.

Recently, a woman from Gurugram fell victim to a scam called “Digital Arrest” and lost Rs 5.85 crore. In September 2024, some thugs made a video call as a law enforcement officer. The woman and her son were threatened to be sent to jail by showing fake IDs. Due to fear, the woman transferred Rs 2.8 crore on the first day and sent Rs 3 crore again the next day.

Government and RBI concern

In some cases, bank workers have also been found to be part of this fraud. Pratap Kesari Pradhan, a bank employee from Bangalore, was arrested by the Cybercrime Police of Hyderabad. He was a Customer Relations Officer at AU Small Finance Bank and opened fake bank accounts for thugs and shared details on WhatsApp.

There have been many such cases across the country, which show that despite government efforts and the clutches of RBI, common people are falling prey to fast. RBI Chief Sanjay Malhotra expressed serious concern over the issue on 27 January 2025 with the CEO of banks. It is estimated that about Rs 2,500 crore has been lost in digital scams in the last two years.

According to experts, the fraudsters often cheat people by creating an atmosphere of fear. In such a situation, people will have to be cautious and understand that no government agency threatens to take action on phone calls. In the event of cyber fraud, immediately call the National Cyber Fraud Helpline Number 1930 or file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. Apart from this, always keep bank alerts active so that information of every transaction can be found immediately.

If you have also received a message or notice recently that your SIM may be closed because you have not updated the KYC, and it has been sent in the name of BSNL or TRAI, be careful. This is a completely fake notice. It has been made clear from the government that BSNL has not issued any such notice and TRAI has nothing to do with it.

Pib Fact Check has warned people with its official X (Twitter) handle, calling this message fake. The tweet said, “Have you also received a notice allegedly from BSNL, claiming that the customer’s KYC is suspended by @TRAI and the SIM card will be blocked within 24 hours? Be careful! This notice is #Fake.”

Further, it has also been told that BSNL never sends notice in this way. At the same time, users have been urged not to share their personal or bank details with anyone.

The image of the notice has also been shared, which states that the user’s KYC has been suspended and if the call is not made in 24 hours, the SIM card will be blocked. Also, a call number and the name of ‘KYC Verification Executive’ has also been given, so that the notice looks real. But after looking carefully, it is clear that there are many disturbances in its language, layout and information.

PIB also stated that the purpose of such fake messages is to scare people and steal their personal and bank details. As soon as you call or click on the link, scammers can ask for your OTP, Aadhaar or account details, which can make fraud transactions.

In such cases, many times users are told that their “SIM service will be suspended immediately”, due to which people give information about fear. But the government has clarified that no mobile service provider, whether BSNL or any other KYC send any ultimatum notice in this way.

Internet access has increased rapidly in the last few years in India. The data network of Reliance Jio, the country’s largest telecom company, has been found to be the fastest. However, Bharti Airtel’s network is the most reliable in voice service. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a government telecom company starting new services in the last few months, is lagging behind in both these segments.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) last month conducted the Independent Drive Test (IDT) for 13 cities and important transit routes. These include private telecom companies like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel as well as BSNL’s performance. This report states that Reliance Jio is the fastest data network. The download speed of the company’s Internet service in Ahmedabad, Gujarat was 355 (megabits per second) and 283 Mbps in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. However, there have also been shortcomings in the performance of Reliance Jio.

The company’s drop call rate in Una and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh was 0.66 percent and 4G and 5G network in Chikmagaluru in Karnataka was 5.8 percent. This is indicating some decrease in the performance of Reliance Jio in hilly and low density areas. Trai This report said that Bharti Airtel’s voice service has been the most reliable. The company has achieved 100 percent call setup success rate (CSSR) in Chennai and Haryana’s Panipat and has a very low drop call rate. However, Bharti Airtel’s voice quality in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh has been deficiencies. Due to network congestion or some other reasons, its setup time has been 12 seconds more than the acceptable levels. Airtel has also had a higher rate in many cities.

The performance of BSNL has been poor in both segments. Its call drop rate in Una has increased to 15 percent. The voice quality of this company has also been poor. BSNL’s data speed has been less than 7 Mbps. With this, the company’s network has been found unfit for more needs of data. BSNL is preparing to start a 5G network soon.

Telecom Disputes Settlement and Applete Tribunal (TDSAT) has stayed on the penalty imposed on telecom companies to stop spam. This penalty was imposed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

A media Report According to, telecom companies, including Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, appealed against TRAI’s order to impose penalty. However, in this case the government telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) did not appeal to TDSAT. Telecom companies said that when TRAI imposed a penalty, the Digital Consent Acquen (DCA) platform was being implemented. In this case, TDSAT has banned the penalty due to allegations from both sides. The next hearing of the case will be held on 13 February.

Telecom companies do not want to pay penalty as their cash flow is already pressure. TDSAT has said that telecom companies are not responsible for delay in implementing regulations including DCA. Apart from Airtel and Reliance Jio, this penalty was imposed on Vodafone Idea and BSNL for about Rs 141 crore. Earlier, these companies have been fined under the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR). TRAI requested the Telecom Department (DOT) to recover the fine.

TCCCPR was implemented in 2010. Its purpose is to secure subscribers with spam calls and messages. The new rule called TRAI’s message tradition has been implemented from December 11 last year. This rule will help reduce spam messages. From the person sending messages from the new system to its delivery can be tracked. With this, telemarketers and other parties involved in sending messages will be tracked. The new system will block the promotional and spam messages that registered by registered firms. Recently, Airtel had reported that more than 8 billion spam calls have been warned on its network. The company launched a solution related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Six percent of the total calls on the company’s network and about two percent of all the SMS were identified as spam.

This is about 94 percent decrease in mobile phone tariffs. He said that a decade ago a decade ago, a GB cost of broadband internet was about 270 rupees. This cost has come down to about Rs 9.70 per GB. The tariff of the Internet has decreased by about 93 percent. India is the most affordable country in terms of internet cost in the world.

Scindia said that the tariff of mobile phone has recently increased by 10 percent. The reason for this is the investment in launching the 5G network faster. He said that 98 percent districts of the country and about 82 percent of the population have been included in the scope of 5G network. Scindia said that telecom companies have enacted about Rs 4.5 lakh crore for this network. Describing the increase in tariffs as correct, he said that returns should be received on investment. Scindia said that India is the cheapest voice and data tariff in India.

Recently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had made it mandatory for telecom companies to bring separate tariff plans of calls and SMS for telecom companies. These prepaid tariff plans are for customers who do not need data. After this, big telecom companies Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have launched prepaid plans for calls and SMS only. These prepaid tariff plans would be better for customers who do not need data. After this, Reliance Jio has introduced tariff plans of Rs 1,748 and Rs 448. Bharti Airtel has launched a new plan of Rs 499. It will have unlimited calls and 84 days validity with 900 SMS. Apart from this, the company has also provided a plan of Rs 1,959.

Landline telephone numbers in India may soon be 10 digital. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has suggested a change in numbering scheme. This includes rules and guidelines to allocate numbers for telecommunication services. The use of landline telephones has decreased in the last few years. However, it is an important means of contact for some services.

TRAI has said that interconnected digital scope has to meet billions of devices and users needs. The availability of numbering resources is important to provide telecommunication services to consumers, industries and businesses in a reliable manner. This will help with a 10 digit numbering system for landline or fixed-line phones. TRAI has proposed to put ‘0’ for landline-to -landline calls and then STD code and subscriber number of the area. For this change, the Telecom Department (DOT) has been given a six -month deadline.

Even after this change, there will be no change in the method of dying of calls from fixed-line from mobile, mobile from mobile and mobile to mobile. TRAI has also indicated the portability of the number of landline phones. Along with this, DOT has been asked to implement the caller ID feature immediately.

At the end of last year, TRAI made it mandatory for telecom companies to provide a separate tariff plan for voice calls and SMS by changing rules. TRAI said at the revised telecom consumers protection regulations, “Service provider would have to offer a special tariff voucher for voice calls and SMS, whose validity will not exceed 365 days.” This will benefit users who do not use data. Along with this, TRAI also allowed telecom companies to provide recharge vouchers of any value. However, these companies will have to issue a recharge coupon of at least Rs 10. Telecom regulator has also taken some measures to overcome the problem of spam calls and messages. TRAI has fined large telecom companies for failing to curb this problem. <!--
