If your train is running late by 3 hours or more than the scheduled time and you no longer wish to travel, you can cancel the ticket to get a full refund. Keep in mind that this facility will be available only if you cancel the ticket before starting the journey.

When your train is late by 3 hours or more than the scheduled time and you have canceled the journey, there will be no deduction. Your full ticket amount will be refunded. Refund will be sent directly to your bank account. But it may take a few days to start the refund process, usually 7 days and maximum up to 90 days.

TDR i.e. Ticket Deposit Receipt is the document through which you tell the Railways that your train is late and you want to cancel the ticket. It is necessary to file TDR so that Railways can process your refund request.

The process of filing TDR is very easy on IRCTC website or mobile app. Login to IRCTC website or mobile app, go to Services tab, select File TDR option, go to My Transactions and select the ticket for which you want refund and choose the reason. After this press the submit button and send the request.

Once the TDR is filed, Railways transfers the refund to your bank account. Apart from filing TDR, you can also cancel the ticket in many other ways. Like from the ticket counter of the railway station, through the railway call center and from the IRCTC mobile app or website.

Tickets can be canceled not only if the train is late, but also due to many other reasons. Such as change in train timing or route, natural disaster or administrative reasons, personal emergency or sudden circumstances and any mistake while booking the ticket.

In such a situation, always file TDR immediately as soon as the train is late. Do not start the journey before canceling the ticket. Enter the bank account details correctly so that the money comes directly into the account. If any problem arises, contact Railway Helpline or IRCTC Support.
