Amidst the ceasefire in the Middle East, a big news has come out regarding the Donald Trump administration. America is now thinking of adopting a tough stance against those countries which did not support it in the war against Iran. According to the report of Politico, the White House has prepared a kind of good and bad list of NATO countries. In this list, countries have been placed in different categories on the basis of their defense expenditure and cooperation given to America.

The list was prepared before the visit of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to Washington. In this, many countries of Europe have been placed in different tiers based on their behaviour. Donald Trump has criticized European countries many times before. He says that many allied countries neither supported America in the Iran war nor helped in opening the Strait of Hormuz. Due to this, oil prices increased and the world economy was affected.

Trump had warned NATO countries

Even before the war, Trump had warned NATO countries that if they did not live up to America’s expectations in defense spending and strategic cooperation, they might have to face consequences. US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth had also indicated about this. He had said that the countries which will support America, like Israel, South Korea, Poland, Germany and the Baltics, will get special support. Action can be taken against countries which do not cooperate.

How will Poland and Romania benefit?

Countries like Poland and Romania can benefit from this policy because they have supported America. However, questions are being raised on countries like Spain, because they objected to NATO’s spending and criticized the Iran war. At present it is not clear what kind of punishment or benefit America will give, but it may include changes in decisions like deployment of troops, joint military exercises and arms sales. A European official also said that America does not see any clear way to punish and if troops are removed, it could only harm America.

What did the White House say about NATO?

The White House has also expressed its views on this entire matter. Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said that America has always stood with its allies, but during the Iran war, many countries did not support it. He also said that President Trump is not satisfied with this situation and America will remember this. The Pentagon has also said that it will further give priority to those countries which are playing an active role in collective security. However, some former officials believe that such a policy could further strain relations between Europe and America, especially at a time when the world is already facing many major crises.
