US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he made a “very good” phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Eneasio Lula Da Silva. Trump described this conversation as important and described it as a positive step towards improving relations between the two countries.

Meeting in the United Nations

Trump said that he had also met Lula in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Trump recalled, “I was going to give a speech and I did not have a teleprompter. At the same time I met President Lula. I found him a very good person. We talked about two minutes, and then I went to give a speech. The leaders of every country were present there.” The meeting took place two weeks ago after a brief but friendly conversation in New York.

First serious conversation after tariff

The specialty of this call is that it was his first serious and detailed conversation after the US imposed 50% tariff on Brazilian items in this summer. It is believed that the White House is trying to reduce stress and improve bilateral relations.

Trump said this big thing

Trump told in his Truth Social Post that this call was very good and it was discussed on economy, business and other subjects. He said: “We will interact further and soon we will meet in both Brazil and America. I enjoyed this call. Our countries will do very well together.”

The two leaders interacted through a video conference for 30 minutes. During this, he discussed the personal meeting and also shared the phone numbers. Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad described this call as “positive”.

Impact on America-Brazilian relations

According to analysts, this initiative is an important step towards reducing business and economic stress between the two countries. This is the first serious contact between Trump and Lula, which can promote American-Brazil business cooperation and political dialogue in the future.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China this week amid 50% import duty imposed by the US. He will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference organized by President Xi Jinping there. This will be PM Modi’s first visit to China after 2018. Five years ago, after the violent clashes on the Himalayan border, the relationship between the two countries was frozen, but now the situation seems to be changing.

After the border dispute, now the relationship coming again
In 2020, there was a violent clash between the soldiers of the two countries in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh, in which 20 soldiers from India and 4 soldiers of China were killed. Now the situation is becoming such that Modi and Xi Jinping can be seen shaking hands. This meeting is being seen towards giving priority to economic stability.

Importance of SCO Summit
Leaders of Russia, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asian countries will also attend the SCO conference. Beijing claims that this will be the largest summit ever. India’s presence indicates that relationships are changing between Asian powers.

Jerk to America
Analysts believe that the warmth of India-China relations can weaken the US effort in which it had added India to balance against China. According to expert Un Sun, it has started with the decisions of Trump, the softening of relationships.

India’s strategy- trying to balance
Analyst Manoj Kevalramani says that America’s pressure gave India a hurry to improve relations with China, although this is not the only reason. India wants to maintain relations with both China and America, under its policy of strategic autonomy.

Border dispute and trust challenge
Tens of tens of soldiers are still deployed on the border of both countries. Recently, India-China agreed to 10 points on the border issue, including the matter of maintaining peace. But expert Tanvi Madan says that trust in both countries is still weak.

Economic compulsion and cooperation
India and China’s mutual trade reached $ 118 billion last year. India gets not only finished goods, but also raw materials and parts from China, on which its industry depends. For this reason, it is also a compulsion to increase economic cooperation between the two countries.

Way of future
Experts believe that this change is not like a complete reset. India is not distance from America, but China is the largest neighbor for it, which is necessary to live with. According to the Farwa Amer of the Asia Society, India-China relations will probably be stable in the future, but the competition will not end.

India gave a message to further strengthen their relationship with Russia on Thursday (August 21, 2025). Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and insisted on increasing bilateral trade. The meeting took place when the US has imposed heavy punitive tariffs on India due to buying oil from Russia.

S Jaishankar meets Putin
Jaishankar held a courtesy call to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. During this time, the two leaders discussed bilateral trade, energy cooperation and strategic partnership. India made it clear that Russia is one of its oldest and trusted colleagues.

Conversation with Lavrov
Before meeting Putin, Jaishankar interacted with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The two leaders also held press briefing. When Jaishankar was asked about the tariff imposed by the US, he said that India is unable to understand American argument.

America’s tariff strike
During the tenure of US President Donald Trump, 25% tariff has been imposed on India so far and an additional 25% punitive fee is going to be implemented soon. The US alleges that India has greatly increased oil imports from Russia after the Ukraine War and has also made a profit by “resale”.

Comparison of India and China
India is currently the second largest country to import oil from Russia, while China is ranked first. Despite this, America did not impose any such restrictions on China. On this, the US Treasury Secretary said that China did not increase its imports as fast as India has done.

Jaishankar’s answer
Jaishankar dismissed the American argument, saying, “Americans themselves told us that we should buy oil from Russia to keep the global energy market stable. We also buy oil from America and there has been a steady increase in that purchase. So we do not understand this argument at all.”

India’s independent policy
The Modi government is constantly advocating strong relations with Russia and is also working on normalizing relations with China. It is an indication that India is adamant on its independent foreign policy despite American pressure.

Modi-Putin Dialogue
Recently, after the meeting of US President Trump and Putin, Putin spoke to Prime Minister Modi over the phone. In this conversation, Modi described Putin as a “friend” and the two leaders decided to maintain close contact. Modi once again said that India constantly wants a peaceful solution to Ukraine war.

The relationship between the two countries is being seen in the relationship between America on India. US Finance Minister Scott Besant has claimed that India has been slightly obstructed in trade talks with America. Besant’s comment came a few days after Donald Trump put 25 percent additional tariff on Indian imports citing oil purchases from Russia.

The additional tariff imposed on India by the US will come into effect from August 27, due to which both countries are trying to find a middle way through talks.

‘Still waiting for big business agreements’
According to a report by news agency Reuters, Besant said that big trade agreements are still awaited, including agreements with Switzerland and India. Referring to India especially, he said that India’s stand in the ongoing talks is a bit obstinate.

Besant reportedly to the Kudlo of the Fox Business Network said that the Trump administration can complete the trade talks till October last. According to Reuters, he said that it is ambitious, but I think we are in good condition. Besant further said that I think we can do so that all important countries will agree on concrete terms.

What did the Union Finance Ministry say
The Union Finance Ministry informed Parliament on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) that the US would affect more than half of India’s total export price. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, said that it is estimated that about 55 percent of the total export price of India to the US is due to the reciperock tariff.

Peter Navarro, close to US President Donald Trump, has described India as the ‘Maharaja of Tariff’. The Trade Advisor of the White House has defended the government’s decision to impose 25 percent additional tariffs on Indian imports on the purchase of Russian crude oil and described it as a matter of national security.

Reiterating the Trump administration, Navaro accused New Delhi of indirectly funding Moscow’s military attack in Ukraine by continuing to purchase Russian oil. During a briefing at the White House, he said, ‘Both India and China are buying Russian oil. Maharaja Tariff has been imposed on India, which is the highest compared to any big country. So they sell us a lot of things and we cannot sell them anything.

Last week, Trump imposed 25 percent tariff on Indian imports as well as additional fine, which came into effect from 7 August. On Wednesday, he issued an executive order to impose 25 percent and additional fee on India’s oil trade with Russia, causing a total duty on Indian imports to be 50 percent. This is the most tariff ever imposed by America on any country.

What did the Trade Advisor of the White House say?

Peter Navaro said in his statement, ‘They use the money given by us to buy Russian oil and then Russia funds the war machinery with that oil money. In such a situation, the United States has to provide defense expenditure assistance to Ukraine, so what is wrong with this? And President Trump knows this very well. “He stressed,” This is a matter of national security and India’s clear refusal to stop buying Russian oil is directly promoting the Russian war machine. “

Then we foot the bill for ukraine. President Trump Sees This Chessboard for What it is. pic.twitter.com/yk5zr3wzip

– Peter Navarro (@Realpnavarro) August 7, 2025

Navaro further said, “America sends India to buy billions of goods in an inappropriate trading environment. India then uses those US dollars to buy Russian oil. Russia uses that money for its military campaigns against Ukraine. In turn, American taxpayers have to pay bills to help protect Ukraine.”

Energy crisis and diplomatic tension are increasing globally due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Meanwhile, the US has warned of 100 percent tariffs by taking a tough stance on the countries of oil importing oil from Russia, especially India and China. Former US President Donald Trump has currently granted 50 days’ deferment and clarified that if there was no peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine during this period, the US would impose secondary tariffs on the countries buying oil from Russia. India currently imports about 33 percent of its oil requirements from Russia, as Russia provides India cheaper crude oil than other countries. Despite this pressure from America, India’s Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has made it clear that India will give priority to its national interests and is not afraid of American threats. He also said that currently the supply in the global oil market is sufficient and there is a possibility of a fall in oil prices in India.

India has set its limits on major issues in areas like agriculture and dairy for the proposed interim trade agreement with the US. So now Washington is in the hands of finalizing the deal.

Sources said that if the issues are resolved, the interim trade agreement can be announced before July 9. The 90-day fee for dozens of countries including India on behalf of US President Donald Trump is also ending on this day. He said that India has set its boundaries and now the ball is in America’s court.

Trying to finalize interim trade agreement

The two countries had announced to start negotiations for bilateral trade agreement (BTA) in February. He decided to complete the first phase of BTA by this year’s autumn (September-October). Before that, both sides are trying to finalize the interim trade agreement.

On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26 percent counter -counter duty on Indian goods, but postponed it for 90 days. However, 10 percent of the original fee levied by the US is still applicable. India wants a complete discount from this 26 percent fee. A source said, “If the proposed trade talks fail, then 26 percent fees will be implemented again.”

India does not trade agreement on the basis of time limit

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said last week that India does not compromise on a deadline basis and will accept the proposed trade agreement with the US only when it is in national interest. According to sources, the FTA is possible only when both sides get benefits and it should be a profitable agreement for both sides.

Only last week, the Indian party has returned from Washington after talking on the interim trade agreement with the US. There are also differences between the two countries at steel and aluminum (50 percent), vehicle (25 percent) fees.

India is also adopting a tough stand

India has tightened its stand on giving fees concessions to the US on agriculture and dairy products, because both are sensitive subjects. India has never opened the dairy sector in any trade agreement signed before.

Trump said last week that his administration is sending letters to the first group of 10-12 countries, in which the details of the counter-duty rates will be shared and the entire process can be completed by 9 July.

The Indian party has returned from Washington after negotiating the interim trade agreement with the US. Giving this information, an official said that the agreement is likely to be finalized before July 9, but some issues in agriculture and vehicle sectors still need to be resolved, so the discussion will continue.

The Indian party is being led by the chief negotiator Rajesh Aggarwal. He is a special secretary in the Department of Commerce. The official said the talks are in the final stages and its conclusion is expected to be announced before 9 July, which is the last day of the 90-day suspension of the US President Donald Trump’s counter-duty in the 90-day suspension.

25 percent fee in vehicle sector

The official said, ‘The Indian team is back from Washington, the talks will continue. There are some issues in agriculture and vehicle areas, which need to be resolved. India has raised the issue on 25 percent fee in the vehicle sector. It has taken up the matter in the Security Committee of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

India has also told the WTO that it has reserved the right to reply on selected American products in response to the US fee on steel and aluminum.

India’s talk with different countries

Union Minister Piyush Goyal said on the trade agreement with the US, ‘India discusses its terms, discussion with different countries, whether it is European Union, New Zealand, Oman, Oman, America, Chile or Peru. Agreement is going on with many countries of India. Free trade agreement is only when there is two -way profit and when the deal is done keeping India’s interests safe, keeping in mind that the national interest will always be the highest.

The Union Minister said that India is always ready to deal with developed countries. India never does any trade deal on a deadline basis. When the deal is good and in national interest, we accept it.

America increased 25 percent duty on imports

In a letter sent to the World Trade Organization, India said that on March 26, 2025, the US has adopted a measure in India or from there as a 25 percent duty increase on import of imported passenger vehicles and light trucks and some vehicles and some vehicles.

This fee on vehicle parts has come into force from May 3, 2025 for an unlimited period. Last year, the US imported vehicles worth $ 89 billion globally. It had a share of Mexico $ 36 billion, China’s $ 10.1 billion and India was only $ 2.2 billion.

After all, why is talks with America important?

The Indian team was in Washington to negotiate an interim trade agreement with the US from 26 June to 2 July. This dialogue is important because the suspension of Trump’s counter duty ends on 9 July. Both sides are considering finalizing the talks before that.

On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26 percent retaliation on Indian goods, but was suspended for 90 days. However, 10 percent of the original fee levied by the US is still applicable. India wants a complete discount from an additional 26 percent fee.

The purpose of the agreement bilateral trade

The two countries are expecting to complete the dialogue for the first phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by September-October this year. The purpose of this agreement is to double bilateral trade from the current $ 191 billion to $ 500 billion by 2030.
