Coming out of small villages situated amidst mountains and forests, tribal students are now reaching the big educational institutions of the country. An inspiring news from Tamil Nadu has proved that no dream is far away if given the right guidance and opportunity. This year, 48 students from schools of the Tribal Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu have achieved such a milestone, which has brought glory to the entire state.

These students have secured admission by passing the entrance examination of India’s top Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM). The special thing is that 18 girl students are also included in these. This is the first time that such a large number of tribal students have been successful in reaching this institute.

It is often believed that only children from big cities get better opportunities, but the tribal students of Tamil Nadu have changed this thinking. Despite limited resources, these students, with their hard work and dedication, achieved what was difficult to even imagine a few years ago. Last year only 11 tribal students were selected, but this time this number has increased to 48.

What is IITTM, where to get admission?

IITTM is considered one of the most prominent tourism and travel management institutes in the country. This institute works under the Union Ministry of Tourism and subjects like Tourism, Travel, Hospitality and Destination Management are taught here.

Selected students will do three years BBA in Tourism and Travel course at the campus in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The most reassuring thing is that the Tamil Nadu government will bear the entire expense of the education of these students. With this, children from economically weaker families will also get an opportunity for higher education.

Parents’ worries become the biggest challenge

According to officials, the biggest challenge in sending children from tribal areas to big institutions of the country is the concern of the parents. Many parents feel hesitant in sending their children to study hundreds of kilometers away from home and village. They are worried about children’s safety, living arrangements and new environment. This is the reason why many talented students are not able to move ahead despite getting opportunities.

Persuasion and counseling changed the picture

To overcome this problem, the Tribal Welfare Department took a special initiative. The department organized counseling sessions for parents in different areas. In these meetings, they were told about the huge career opportunities available in the tourism and travel sector. They were also assured that the children will be given all kinds of assistance during their studies. The effect of this effort of the officials and teachers was visible and a large number of parents allowed their children to move forward.

Special training given to students

The goal was not just to pass the exam. The department also decided to prepare the students better for the competition. For this, a special training camp was organized at Ekalavya Model Residential Higher Secondary School, Kumizhi, Kanchipuram. In this camp, students were given training in speaking English, giving interviews, participating in group discussions and increasing self-confidence. Experts explained to him that for selection in big institutions, not only studies but also personality development is important.
