PM Modi Trinidad Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave on a historic visit to Trinidad and Tobago on 3 and 4 July 2025. This will be the first bilateral visit of any Indian Prime Minister after 1999 and PM Modi himself will have the first official presence in this country. This journey is not just diplomatic formality. It is an honor for the heritage of 225 Indians, who landed on this Caribbean land on 30 May 1845 from the ‘Fateh-al-Rajak’ ship for the first time. He was a laborer, who was called Girmitia and today his descendants will receive the Prime Minister on the same earth.

Nina Malhotra, Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, said that during this visit, PM will meet Modi Modi and Tobago President Christine Carla Kangalu. After this, he will hold bilateral talks with Kamala Persad-Bisacer and will address the joint session of Parliament and communicate with the most important Indian community. This tour is also notable because both the top leaders are President and Prime Minister Bharatvanshi women, who are proud to call themselves the daughters of India.

Girmitia History: Travel from 1845 to 2025
When the ‘Fateh-al-Razak’ ship reached the banks of Trinidad, most of the 225 Indian laborers in it came from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Their main objective was to work in sugarcane gardens in the British colony. Cheap laborers were sent from India to Caribbean, Mauritius, Fiji etc. from India. These laborers were taken on a contract called Agreement. The ships used to travel under extremely difficult and inhuman conditions. Today the same Girmitia descendants are about 45% of the population of Trinidad and Tobago – playing an important role in politics, economy and society.

Cultural reunion and global diplomacy
Through this visit of PM Modi, India is not only strengthening political relations, but it is also re -discovering and recognizing cultural roots. This visit of PM will give many benefits like, diaspora diplomacy will be strengthened. Relations with Caricom countries (Caribbean community) will depth. There will be new opportunities for development projects and business cooperation. There will be agreements in education, culture, health and digital connectivity. Apart from this, this tour will also give new energy to deep relations with the overseas Indians of India.
