US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that 25% import duty (tariff) will be imposed on all medium and heavy trucks imported in the US from 1 November 2025. This step has been taken to protect American truck manufacturers from foreign competition.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, “From 1 November 2025, 25% tariffs will be imposed on all medium and heavy duty trucks coming from other countries.” Trump said that the decision has been taken to protect American companies and workers from unfair foreign competition. He said, “We will not let our industries suffer from foreign dumping and wrong trade policies.”

Which countries will be affected

The decision will affect many countries, including Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany and Finland.

Mexico exports the most medium and heavy trucks to the US. Since 2019, the truck export of Mexico has increased three times to about 3.4 lakh units.

Under the USMCA agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada, trucks can still be imported without any duty, provided their 64% value comes from North America. The new tariff can affect this system.

Impact on companies

Stellantis (which makes ‘Ram’ brand trucks and vans) may now have to face more costs on trucks made in Mexico.

The Volvo Group is a Sweden company that is constructing a new 700 million dollar truck plant in Montere, Mexico, which is expected to be operational in 2026. The new tariff can also affect this investment.

Time to implement tariff increased

Last month, Trump had said that this tariff could be applicable from October 1, but now its date has been extended to 1 November 2025. He claimed that this step would benefit American companies like Peterbilt, Kenworth and Freightliner.

Currently, under the trade agreements with the US, Japan and the European Union, light vehicles impose 15% tariffs, but it is not clear how the new rule will apply to large vehicles.

Tata truck ac cabin: India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors has announced the launch of the factory-fake air conditioning (AC) system in its entire range of trucks. Now whether it is SFC, LPT, Ultra, SIGNA or Prima- This facility will be available in every cabin. Not only this, for the first time AC is also being provided in the coul model.

The new air conditioning system of Tata Motors is specially designed keeping in mind the needs of truck drivers. This system provides facilities like eco and heavy dual mode operations, so that better cooling can be ensured in all weather and driving conditions. This new AC system will relieve drivers from fatigue during long distance travel and the cabin of the truck will become a comfortable place even in the summer season.

Drivers will get relief from heat

Tata Motors truck business head and Vice President Rajesh Kaul said that this initiative is a big step towards giving a comfortable journey to the drivers. He said that the company has prepared this system through smart engineering keeping in mind the reaction of the customers.

Increased power output

Tata Motors not only added the air conditioning system, but has increased the power output to 320 horsepower in its heavy trucks like tippers and prime movements. This increase will improve the driving performance of trucks and the ability to carry heavy goods.

Apart from this, the company has also introduced some more value edition features, including better mileage, automatic engine cut-off system, and real time alert system with voice messaging. These new features will increase both the usefulness of the truck and the safety of the driver, as well as the driver’s productivity will also be better.

Government support and rules

Positive steps have also been taken by the government in this direction. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made AC cabins mandatory in N2 and N3 category trucks to be created since or after 1 October 2025. The announcement was made in December last year through a gazette notification. Also, it has been decided that the AC system to be installed in these trucks will be tested according to the IS14618: 2022 standards.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also approved a draft notification regarding AC installation in trucks. He had said that this decision is an important and essential step to reduce the safety and fatigue of drivers, which will make their work environment even more safe and comfortable in the future.
