Indian-origin MP of US Congress Pramila Jayapal has strongly criticized the heavy tariffs imposed on India by President Donald Trump. He said that this policy is not only increasing inflation in America, but is also taking away important strategic and trade partners like India from America, which can weaken America’s position at the global level.

Pramila Jaipal wrote on social media platform He warned that this may encourage India to grow closer to Russia and China, which is harmful for America’s economy and security interests.

Up to 50 percent tariff applicable on India
America has imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on many products imported from India. Jaipal said such high rates weaken bilateral trade relations and harm both countries in the long run.

Issue of neighboring countries raised in parliamentary hearing
During a parliamentary hearing, Jaipal asked expert witness Sameer Lalwani what could be India’s reaction if its neighbors Pakistan and Bangladesh get lower tariff rates amid heavy tariffs being imposed on India. He asked whether this is creating a perception in India that America is no longer a reliable partner.

Fear of inclination towards BRICS and SCO
Jaipal also raised the question as to what effect this policy of America will have on India’s relations with BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). He expressed apprehension that such decisions could take India closer to these multilateral groups.

Expert said big concern for India
Sameer Lalwani, in response, said that the tariffs of the Trump administration are a matter of serious concern for India. He said that this is having a negative impact on India’s exports, costs are increasing and the competitiveness of Indian products is decreasing.

Increasing pressure on labour-intensive sectors
Since August, under Trump’s trade policy, import duties on Indian products such as clothing, gems, leather and seafood have been increased, reaching up to 50 percent in some cases. Indian officials and industry organizations say that due to these high tariffs, India’s exports to America may decline.

Impact on India’s largest export market
America is India’s largest export market. According to experts, if the tariff policy is not changed, it could increase the threat to jobs in India’s labour-intensive industries and further deepen tensions in India-US trade relations.
