An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude occurred in Japan’s Hokkaido and Tohoku regions on Friday, causing panic throughout the northern region. According to NHK, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for the North Pacific coast. This shock comes after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake, after which a warning of aftershocks was issued late on Monday night.

Monday night’s 7.5 magnitude earthquake
A massive earthquake that occurred at 11:15 pm on Monday night shook northern Japan. The shock was recorded in the Pacific Ocean, about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori. More than 34 people were injured in this accident.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that relief and rescue operations are underway and the damage is being assessed. He said, ‘We are giving priority to people’s lives and working at full capacity.’

According to JMA, a tsunami wave about 70 centimeters high reached Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture. Waves up to 50 cm were recorded in nearby coastal cities. NHK reported that local oyster farming rafts suffered minor damage.

Electricity failure in 800 houses, stop on Shinkansen trains
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said that power supply was disrupted in about 800 houses. As a precaution, Shinkansen (Bullet Train) and many local trains were stopped till Tuesday morning. East Japan Railway later confirmed that services had been restored. Tohoku Electric Power Company said power supply was restored in most areas by Tuesday morning.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has expressed the possibility of aftershocks in the coming days. The agency also said the risk of a major earthquake of magnitude 8 and a possible tsunami from Chiba (east of Tokyo) to Hokkaido off the north-eastern coast has ‘slightly increased’.

People advised to be cautious
182 local units in the area have been asked to remain alert and review their disaster preparedness plans till next week. JMA clarified that this is not a ‘prediction’ of any major earthquake, but an alert issued as a precaution.

A tremendous earthquake was recorded in the morning in the remote Eastern Region of Russia, which has measured 8.7 on the Richter scale.

According to Limaranco, Governor of Severo-Kurilsk, the first wave of tsunami has hit the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk. It is the main area of the Kuril Islands of Russia.

The earthquake in Camachka came under the sea, which is expected to cause heavy losses in the coastal areas. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a low depth of about 19.3 km, which felt strong tremors on the surface.

Low -depth earthquakes have more effect on the land surface and often cause tsunamis. According to experts, this region is already considered a sensitive area of collision of technic plates.

After the earthquake news surfaced, the Japan Meteorological Agency immediately issued a warning that 1 meter (about 3.28 ft) waves could reach the coastal areas of Japan.

The US Tsunami Warning Center also said that in the next three hours, dangerous waves can reach Russia and parts of Japan. There is also a possibility of light waves in other Pacific Islands like Philippines, Marshall Islands, Palau.

Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was immediately informed about the situation and he called an emergency meeting. The government has started relief and rescue operations on a war footing. Meanwhile, the Fukushima nuclear plant located in Japan has been evacuated.

Earlier in July also, there was an earthquake in the sea near Camchatka, which was 7.4. People are being expelled from small cities like Severo-Kurilsk located in the Sakhalin region of Russia. Local administration and army are working together to ensure the safety of the people.

No casualties have been reported so far, but a kindergarten school has been confirmed to be damaged. The regional governor has described it as the most powerful earthquake of decades and appealed people to go to safe places.

The continuous afterchox in the area has made the situation more frightening. Citizens have been asked not to pay attention to rumors and only follow the official instructions.
