After the third phase of vote counting in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAAD) elections, Tipra Motha Party (TMP) is in a strong position with a lead in 22 out of 28 seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on six seats, while the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Congress and ‘Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura’ (IPFT) are trailing on all the seats.

Tipra Motha Party (TMP) is a key ally in the BJP-led coalition government in the state, yet both parties fought the tribal council elections separately.

Bipul Barman, OSD (Officer on Special Duty) of the State Election Commission, said, ‘Counting of votes started peacefully at 8 am amid tight security at all the 17 centres. After the third phase of counting, TMP is leading in 22 out of total 28 seats, while BJP is leading in six seats.

In the 2021 elections, TMP won 18 seats while BJP got nine seats.

Nearly 83 percent voting was recorded in the TTAAD elections held on April 12. Sporadic incidents of violence also took place during voting. TTAAD is spread over two-thirds of the geographical area of ​​the state and has a population of 13 lakhs.

In the outgoing TTAADC, TMP has 17 Zilla Parishad members, while BJP has nine members and two seats are vacant.
