The peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Türkiye’s capital Istanbul once again ended without any result. The objective of this meeting was to reach a consensus on the ongoing border tension between the two countries and the activities of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), but the talks broke down due to Pakistan’s tactics. According to sources, Pakistan sought permission to enter into Afghan territory and take action against TTP hideouts, to which Kabul expressed strong objection. There was a heated debate between the two sides on this issue and the atmosphere of talks deteriorated.

The Afghan side had assured Pakistan that it would not allow its soil to be used for anti-Pakistan activities. In return, Kabul demanded Islamabad to stop violating its airspace and stop flights of American drones. Initially Pakistan seemed to agree, but after a sudden “unknown call” its stand changed. According to NDTV report, after this call, Pakistan admitted for the first time that it has an agreement to fly drones with a foreign country (hint American), which cannot be canceled.

Afghanistan distanced itself from the meeting

Afghanistan took this revelation seriously and distanced itself from the meeting. This attitude of Pakistan was shocking for both Türkiye and Qatar, who were the mediators of this talk. After this, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif in his statement described Afghanistan as “Pakistan’s pawn” and warned that if Pakistan is attacked, the reply will be given with “fifty percent more force”.

Afghanistan gave a blunt answer

Afghanistan also responded bluntly. Its Home Ministry spokesperson Abdul Matin Kani said, “We do not have nuclear weapons, but Afghans have never bowed before anyone. Which is enough to teach Pakistan a lesson.” Afghan Defense Minister Maulvi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid also said that “TTP is an internal problem of Pakistan. Its members are Pakistani citizens, against whom Afghanistan has no jurisdiction to take action.”

In this way, Pakistan’s ‘dual policy’ has once again come to the fore. While on one hand he talks about peace, on the other hand he continues to make efforts to encroach on the sovereignty of his neighboring country. The breakdown of talks in Istanbul is being considered a major diplomatic blow for the entire South Asia including India, America, Türkiye and Qatar.

Pakistan, which is known as the haven of terrorists, is scared of the threat of TTP. Recently, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has issued several videos and openly challenged the country’s army. In one of these videos, TTP Commander Kazim directly challenged Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and said that if you have courage then come to the field and fight with us. Apart from this he said that if you are a man then face us. If you have drank your mother’s milk then fight us. This statement created a stir throughout Pakistan. This is not the first time that TTP has made such a threat, but this time its attitude appears to be even more aggressive. After the video surfaced, Pakistan’s Home Ministry has announced a reward of 10 crore Pakistani rupees to anyone who helps in the arrest of Kazim.

On October 8, 2025, TTP ambushed a Pakistani Army convoy in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. TTP claimed to have killed 22 soldiers and seized many army weapons and vehicles. However, the Pakistani Army officially confirmed only 11 deaths. This attack made it clear that TTP is now more organized than ever in the border areas of Pakistan.

Ceasefire attempts and their failure

In recent months, an attempt was made to broker a ceasefire between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban through the mediation of Qatar and Turkey, but this initiative could not last long. Pakistan made it clear that unless action is taken against groups like TTP on Afghan soil, no agreement will have any meaning. The silence of the Kabul government has made Pakistan’s situation more difficult.

Danger of return of new terrorist groups

The increasing activism of TTP has also given courage to other extremist organizations inside Pakistan. Groups like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) and Jaish-e-Mohammed are now intensifying their old activities again. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has been notorious for attacks on minorities, while ISKP has in the past attracted disgruntled TTP fighters to its fold. The activity of all these indicates that Pakistan’s internal security has again reached an explosive point. Although Army Chief Asim Munir is said to be a man with a tough stance, the recent attacks by TTP have raised questions on his strategy.
