The clouds of confusion over the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu have now, in a way, been removed. TVK Chief Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Friday (8 May 2026) and staked claim to form the government. According to sources, Vijay has the support of 121 MLAs, more than the majority. In Tamil Nadu, which has 234 assembly seats, the magic figure of majority to form the government is 118.

This is Vijay’s third meeting with the Governor. Earlier when he had met the Governor, he did not have the support of MLAs required to form the government. According to sources, the Governor had asked him to come with the required number of MLAs.

Vijay will take oath as CM tomorrow

TVK chief Vijay will take oath as CM on May 9 at 11 am at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. Apart from 107 MLAs of his own party, Vijay handed over letters of support to Governor Rajendra Arlekar from 5 MLAs of Congress, 2 of CPM, 2 of CPI, 2 of VCK, 2 of IUML, 1 MLA of AMMK, which is a total of 121. That means Vijay has only 3 MLAs more than the majority.

Left party will not be part of TVK cabinet

CPI and CPM, both Left parties in the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, said the decision to extend support has been taken to prevent BJP from making a backdoor entry into the state. However, on the issue of state rights they (Left parties) will remain with the DMK. Left parties have announced that they will not be a part of the TVK cabinet. Both CPI and CPM have two MLAs each. After a day-long discussion, he announced his support to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party. Congress, which has five MLAs, has already supported TVK.

According to Election Commission rules, party founder Vijay will have to give up one of the two seats he won. Vijay will have to give up one of the Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East seats in Chennai.

A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking registration of an FIR against actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in a case of alleged income tax irregularities. This matter is said to be related to the film Puli released in 2015. The High Court registry has numbered the petition on Wednesday (6 May 2026) and it may soon be listed for hearing on the issue of maintainability.

What is the whole matter?

Although this petition was first filed last month, the registry had initially refused to give it a number. After this, on April 8, Chief Justice Sushruta Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. The division bench of Arul Murugan had directed the registry to number the petition under maintainability. It has been said in the petition that after the release of the film Puli, the Income Tax Department had conducted search and seizure action on the premises associated with Vijay on September 30, 2015. During this time, such documents were allegedly found which indicated unaccounted cash transactions.

TVK Chief was also interrogated before

According to the documents, the film’s producer P.T. Selvakumar and Shibu (SKT Studios) had given Vijay Rs 16 crore through check and about Rs 4.93 crore in cash. The petition claimed that TDS was deposited only on the amount paid through cheque, and not on cash payment. The petition also said that Vijay was interrogated during the Income Tax investigation, in which he allegedly admitted to receiving around Rs 5 crore in cash and agreed to pay tax on it.

Had himself disclosed disproportionate assets

Additionally, he had voluntarily disclosed additional income of Rs 15 crore for the financial year 2015-16. Later, on July 29, 2016, Vijay filed an income tax return declaring a total income of Rs 35.42 crore for assessment year 2016-17, which included this additional income. Depreciation of Rs 17.81 lakh and exemption on fans club expenses of Rs 64.71 lakh were also claimed in the return. The petition has now demanded criminal action and registration of FIR against Vijay on the basis of facts revealed in the income tax proceedings.

Actor Vijay announced many schemes

While announcing, Vijay said that women will be given two and a half thousand rupees every month. State and central government employees will benefit from this scheme. During this, he also announced Annapurni Super Six Scheme. Under this scheme, every family will be given 6 free LPG cylinders in a year. Apart from this he also announced Annan Seer Scheme. Under this scheme, at the time of marriage of daughters, the bride will be given 8 grams of gold and silk saree as a tradition from her maternal house.

Children should not leave school, parents will be given help

Vijay announced to provide free travel facility to women in all government buses under a Vetri Payanam scheme. Rani Velu Nachiyar Force will be formed for the safety of women. In this, women force officers will be deployed at various places in plain clothes and with body cameras. 500 such special teams will be formed for women in entire states.

Apart from these, Vijay also mentioned Kamarajar Education Rights Scheme. He said that no child should leave school from class 1 to 12. Therefore, every year financial assistance of Rs 15,000 will be given to the parents of the children.

Special courts will be created to stop crimes related to women

To free women from the increasing crime, Anjalai Ammal Fast Track Court for Women will be set up for investigation and quick justice. Smart panic buttons will be installed in public transport for the safety of women. He said that by installing CCTV cameras and good lighting in sensitive areas, such areas will be created which will not remain dark spots. Apart from this, modern command centers will also be built.

In these, free sanitary pads will also be made available at public places like ration shops, schools and colleges. Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme has been announced for the child born in Tamil Nadu. In this, the newborn will be given a gold ring from the government. Apart from this, baby welcome kit will also be given.
