Repeated Ultrasound during pregnancy: Pregnancy is a period when a woman who becomes a mother is cautious about every small and big thing. From listening to the first heartbeat of the child to its first movement, every moment is special for the mother. In this journey, ultrasound becomes a medium from which the mother can see the glimpse of her little guest. But as the use of technology has increased, a question has also started to arise again and again in the minds of the people whether to do repeated ultrasound is safe for the child?

What is ultrasound and why is it used?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive technique in which a picture of a baby in the womb is seen with the help of high-frequency sound waves (sound waves). This test helps the doctor to know the baby’s growth, amniotic fluid and the child’s position. In pregnancy, usually 2 to 3 ultrasound is considered normal and safe. But one should do it only once in a month.

According to Dr. Saloni Srivastava, ultrasound is a safe process, but it should be done only when it is needed. If there is no medical need, then it is not necessary to do ultrasound repeatedly to see the baby.

When and when ultrasound is done?

  • Ultrasound is mainly done three times in pregnancy

  • First quarter (6-9 weeks): to learn heartbeat

What to do and what not to do?

  • Get ultrasound done only on doctor’s advice

  • Do not get ‘4D’ or ‘5D’ scan for recreation or curiosity again and again

  • Honor ultrasound technology, but avoid over-use

Ultrasound in pregnancy is a precious technique that makes the mother experience her connectivity with her baby. It is safe, but it should be used only when medical needs. Dr. Saloni Srivastava advises that, in this journey of becoming a mother, along with emotions, the balance of discretion and science is also necessary.
