But Shaharyar’s trend was towards literature and poetry. After completing his early education in Hardoi, he moved to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1948, where he earned a postgraduate degree in Urdu in 1961.

However, Shaharyar started poetry in the 1960s itself. He was soon recognized for his unique style. The mixture of sadness and irony in his poetry brought a new color in the Urdu poetry of that time.
