Many of us Indians make many types of investments. These investments are long term and we deposit them thinking about the future. But similar amounts of money are lying unclaimed in the share markets and banks of Indians. This amount is not small or small but amounts to crores of rupees and assets. This has been revealed in a study conducted by 1 Finance Research.

The amount is in crores
1 According to a report by Finance Magazine, by December 2025, an amount of about Rs 89,000 crore is stuck in the shares of 1671 listed companies. According to this report, this property is lying unclaimed in sectors like bank deposits, shares, insurance and EPF. This property will be worth a total of Rs 2.2 lakh crore, for which there is no claimant. Not only this, this money and assets are not only lying unclaimed but are also gradually facing the brunt of inflation and are losing their value.

How much money is there unclaimed?
This money is stuck in banks and stock markets. In which Rs 97,545 crore are lying in bank deposits, for which there is no claimant. This money goes to RBI’s DEA fund. According to the fund, only 3 percent simple interest is available on this money. Apart from this, Rs 89,004 crore in equity shares is stuck in the shares of 1671 listed companies. So Rs 20,062 crore is lying in insurance. This amount is in the form of maturity, death claim or surrender value. So Rs 10,915 crores are lying in EPF, there is no one to claim them. Out of these, 38 percent EPF accounts have been inactive for years. Apart from this, crores of rupees of people are also stuck in mutual funds. Of this, there is Rs 3452 crore which has no claimant.

Why is the situation like this?
Some people forget to do important things while investing. Like many people forget to add the name of the nominee during this time or do not update it with time, due to which this money gets stuck. Not giving family information during investment is also a big reason for this. Many people do not know how to make a claim, due to this their money gets stuck. For this reason, all procedures should be followed while investing. Along with this, family members should also be informed about their investments.

Unclaimed Wealth: Crores of rupees are lying unclaimed in the country and no one has any information about the real owners of this money. There are many families whose members’ money is deposited in bank accounts, insurance funds or mutual funds, but the family members are not even aware of it. This means that there are crores of rupees lying across the country which have no claimant today.

SEBI registered investment advisor and founder of Sahaj Money, Abhishek Kumar has drawn attention to this serious issue. He recently wrote in a LinkedIn post that about Rs 80,000 crores are lying unclaimed. He also said that this topic is very important, but very few people talk about it.

Why do funds remain unclaimed?

According to Abhishek Kumar, this situation is not because people are short of money, but its real reason is lack of communication, complexity of paperwork and lack of awareness among families. He asked people whether their family knows about their money? Many times it happens that after a person’s death, the family has no information about his investments, due to which the money remains unclaimed for years.

real example

Giving an example, Abhishek Kumar said that last year he helped a client whose wife did not know that Rs 15 lakh had been invested in mutual funds in his name.

Similarly, he mentioned another incident in which it took two years for a family to get their bank account unlocked. The reason for this was that the nominee’s name was not added to the account.

Is just a will sufficient?

Abhishek Kumar warned that many people think that merely making a Will is enough, but it is not so. He clarified that a will is effective only when it is prepared through proper evidence and legal process.

There are lakhs of families in the country whose hard-earned money is stuck in various financial institutions. Experts say people should share information about their investments with family, add nominees to all accounts, and keep important documents in order so that their assets do not remain unclaimed in the future.
