Actually, big digital payment platforms like Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe suddenly went down and online transactions were stuck across the country.

Flood of complaints on social media platforms

Users on social media platforms like X and Instagram brought floods of complaints. The number of reports on a website like Downdetector also suddenly increased. On opening Paytm, users were getting direct error messages, “UPI App is Facing Some Issues.” That is, it was clear that the problem was not limited to only one app, but there was a major technical disturbance in the entire UPI system.

This is the third time

The thing to see is that this is the third time in the last one month when the UPI service has come to a standstill. A system on which millions of people depend on every day, this way to crash again and again is bothering people. Especially shopkeepers, cab drivers and common consumers were badly affected.

Records were made in March, now questions on trust

Let us tell you that in March 2025, UPI transactions set a record in India, a total of 18.30 billion transactions, which was 5 per cent higher than in February. There was a total transaction of 24.77 lakh crore in March. But the speed with which Digital India is moving forward, now the question has started to arise whether such technical flaws can stop its speed?

Who is the king of UPI?

PhonePe became the biggest player in the world of UPI in March, which did 864.7 crore transactions, ie about 47 percent of the entire system. At the same time, Google Pay handled more than 36 percent transactions. Both apps are handling a large part of UPI together, but when the server down, all these big names are not able to give relief to the users.

Moneycontrol Report It has been reported that some merchants and PSP Banks (banking partners of UPI apps) sent the system repeatedly check transaction requests, while permission to do so is only once every 90 seconds. Instead, some banks started verifying even old transactions, which slowed down the entire network and the transaction success rate suddenly fell to 50%.

It has been further reported that NPCI noted a drastic drop in transaction success rate on UPI from 11:40 am to 4:40 pm during this outage of April 12. The success rate was just 50% in the first two hours, while it remained close to 80% for three hours. Eventually at 4:40 pm, the system became normal again.

During this incident, many PSP banks continued to send requests to the UPI system with “Check Transaction” API. Whereas NPCI rules reportedly say that this call should be only once within 90 seconds. This frequent action taken created a jam-like situation in the entire network. As a result, neither the user got the reply to the payment, nor the banks were able to clear the transaction on time.

NPCI, taking immediate action on this, asked PSP banks to stop the check transaction call at 4 pm and also put a temporary solution in the system at 4:15 pm to stop the flood of cross-site requests. Also, all PSPs and Acquering banks have been advised to use the raw data files being sent every 2 hours for the final status of transactions, not to increase the load by calling the system repeatedly.

However, it was not told in the report why these transactions were failing and why were so many failures in the beginning. A bank official told the publication that the real reason has not been given in the report, which should have been the most important part.

A large technical outage in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) stalled popular apps like Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay for hours. Due to this, people had to face huge difficulties in everyday shopping, bill payment and transfer of money.

Payment is failing

As soon as UPI was down, there was a flood of complaints on the downdetector. According to the Downdetector website, more than 2,300 complaints were filed till about 1 pm. At the same time, about 81 percent of the users said that payment failed. Whereas, 17 percent faced fund transfer in fund transfer. At the same time, 2 percent told the purchases related problems. It became clear from this outage that the problem was not limited to only one app or bank, but there was a big disturbance in the entire UPI network.

Why did the UPI system run every second?

The UPI system runs 24 hours, 365 days, without any holiday. More than 17 billion transactions and more than Rs 25 lakh crore is paid through UPI every month in India. More than 630 banks in the world are associated with this system, and now UPI is also working in countries like Nepal, UAE, France, Bhutan, Singapore, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

83 percent of digital payments in the country is only through UPI. In such a situation, this outage is a big shock, especially when the government is promoting Digital India globally.

What NPCI said?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued its official statement on the UPI outage. The NPCI has said, “There are some technical problems in the UPI system currently, due to which some transactions are failing. Our technical team is engaged in fixing this problem. We will soon fully fix it and will keep giving updates. We are sorry for this problem.”

Upi server down: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services have been affected across the country, due to which the transaction has come to a standstill. Money is back in so many days

Today, everyone in India makes UPI payment. UPI payment is also taken from big shopkeepers to small shops. If you too have paid from UPI and the payment has failed, but the money has been deducted from your account, then you do not need to panic in this situation. According to RBI rules, banks have to return within a day. If it takes more than a day, then banks have to pay the customer per day.

Can complain here

Sometimes UPI payment gets stuck due to haste or technical problem, or goes to someone’s account. In such a situation, you do not need to panic. To get this kind of money back, you need to file a complaint within 48 hours, after which there is no guarantee of stuck money. Despite this, if your money is not returned, then you can also contact your bank, the bank will help you in this.
