UPI Record Transactions in October: A great example of how UPI transactions have become very popular in India is proved by the data of NPCI. The festive season has once again shown a tremendous boom in India’s digital economy. The biggest record till date was recorded through Unified Payment System i.e. UPI in October 2025. According to NPCI, a total of 20.7 billion transactions were made this month, amounting to Rs 27.28 lakh crore – an all-time high in terms of value.

Previous record broken

There was a record UPI transaction of Rs 25.14 lakh crore in May 2025. Two months later, in August 2025, nearly 20 billion transactions were recorded – which was the previous high in terms of volume. This time the transaction value increased by 16% compared to October 2024, while an increase of 9.5% was recorded compared to September 2025.

There were an average of 66.8 crore transactions per day. The daily average value stood at Rs 87,993 crore. This increase has been driven by the surge in retail purchases and online payments during the festive season (Dussehra and Diwali).

What do experts say?

Spice Money CEO Dilip Modi says that the continuous growth of UPI during busy sales periods like the festive season reflects the strength of India’s digital infrastructure and real-time payment capabilities. This shows that digital payments have now been fully adopted from cities to villages. UPI’s share in digital transactions in India: 85%, share in global real-time digital payments: around 50%.

Currently UPI operates in 7 countries – UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France and Mauritius. Its launch in France is being considered a major achievement as the first presence of UPI in Europe.

UPI record transactions: How much the popularity of UPI has increased in India towards digital, you can also guess from the fact that in a day, more transactions from the population of America have been done through UPI. According to data from the year 2024, the US population was around 341.2 million, but on August 2, 2025 in India, a record 707 million transactions were done through UPI.

Rapid growing UPI’s popularity
These figures shared by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) show how the use of this platform has increased rapidly. In the last few years, UPI has achieved this historic position. In 2023, about 350 million (35 million) of UPI transactions were done every day. By August 2024, this number increased to 500 million (50 crore). Now this figure has reached 700 million (70 crore).

Target of 1 billion (100 crore) transactions

Now the government aims to bring daily transactions to 1 billion (100 crore) through UPI. It is estimated that if the UPI transactions continue to grow from this side, then this goal will be achieved by next year.

Last month, about 19.5 billion (1.95 billion) transactions were conducted through UPI, with a total amount of more than Rs 25 lakh crore. About 85% of digital transactions in India are now done through UPI. Not only this, about 50% of the total digital transactions to be held worldwide is now being done from UPI, which shows India’s technical leadership capacity.

It is worth noting that on 2 August 2025, for the first time, the number of daily transactions reached 70 million (700 million) through UPI, which has been confirmed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) itself. In July 2025, an average of 65 crore (650 million) transactions were done daily through UPI. Experts believe that in early August, this number reached beyond 70 crores due to payment from UPI like fare, electricity-water bills and salary transfer.

GST on UPI transactions: UPI transactions, becoming increasingly popular in the country, are proving to be a milestone towards promoting the government’s digital India campaign. Amid reports of recent GST on UPI, the Finance Ministry has clarified in the Rajya Sabha that no idea has been made to impose GST on transactions of more than 2000 rupees. During the monsoon session on July 22, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that it has not been recommended to impose GST on transactions above two thousand rupees.

GST will not be imposed on UPI transaction

Responding to a question of the government’s views about GST on transactions above two thousand rupees, Pankaj Chaudhary said that on the basis of GST Council’s recommendation, GST rates and exemption are decided. It is a constitutional body, which includes members of both the state and the center.

Significantly, the GST case on UPI transactions came to light when about 6000 GST notice has been issued to traders on the basis of data of UPI transactions in Karnataka.

The organization of traders in Karnataka has threatened to strike against the GST notice sent on the basis of data of GST transactions. While the Income Tax officials have described it as the right step according to the law.

Speaking to the news agency PTI, Joint Commissioner of Commercial Tax, Meera Suresh Pandit said that when the transaction limit in the service sector crosses the limit of 20 lakhs and goods for goods, it becomes mandatory to register its business under the GST Act. Along with this, your turnover also has to be announced

UPI transactions in India: How the trend of people has increased rapidly towards digital payment, you can guess from the fact that in the month of May itself, a transaction of 18.68 billion has taken place. This is 4 percent higher than the month of April. Earlier, there was a transaction of 17.89 billion in April. If it is seen according to the currency, then it is a transaction of Rs 25.14 lakh crore in the month of May, which was Rs 23.95 crore in April a month ago.

33 percent increase on an annual basis

According to the National Payment Corporation of India, where this is an increase of 33 percent in UPI payment compared to last year, it has increased by about 14 percent more than in April. On an average, 602 million transactions have taken place in the month of May. Its total value is Rs 81,106 crore.

Significantly, UPI, which started in 2016 in the country, has received popularity, especially after the demonetisation. On the one hand, where the smartphone has reached the people fast, apps like Phone Pay, Google Pay and Paytm have further strengthened digital payments. In such a situation, UPI has increased its scope in digital payment.

UPI’s popularity increased rapidly

The total transaction during the financial year 2024-25 was 83.7 percent, which was 79.7 percent a year ago. The RBI said that by the next 2028-29, UPI will increase the scope of UPI in about 20 countries of the world. Already in Bhutan, France, Nepal, Mauritius, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the Indian UPI app is accepted through QR code. With this, it has become very easy to pay Indian students, tourists and businessmen through the UPI app.
