What is the reason for frequent urination after drinking water?

1. Overactive Bladder – This is considered to be the most common reason for frequent urination. In this situation the bladder muscles become excessively active. Even when the bladder is not completely full, it repeatedly sends urine signals to the brain, causing a sudden and strong urge to urinate. This is why one has to run to the washroom even after drinking a small amount of water.

2. Urinary tract infection (UTI) – If there is burning sensation, pain, foul smell or frequent urination while urinating, then it can be a sign of UTI. In this the bladder becomes more sensitive.

3. Consumption of excessive tea, coffee or alcohol – Tea, coffee and alcohol contain caffeine, which increases urination and causes irritation in the bladder, causing frequent urge to urinate.

4. Sugar (diabetes) not under control – If the blood sugar level is high then the body tries to remove the excess sugar through urine, which leads to more urine and also more thirst.

5. Stress and anxiety – Mental stress or anxiety can also increase this problem. The nervous system starts sending wrong signals to the bladder, causing frequent urination.

What to do to avoid frequent urination?

1. Adopt the right way of drinking water – Do not drink too much water at once, drink small amounts of water throughout the day. Avoid drinking water too fast.

2. Reduce caffeine and fizzy drinks – Reducing the intake of tea, coffee, cold drinks and energy drinks provides relief to the bladder.

3. Do not make a habit of going to the bathroom frequently – Going to the washroom every 10–15 minutes can weaken the bladder. The ability to control urine decreases. Try to go to the bathroom within the stipulated time.

4. Do pelvic floor exercises – Pelvic floor exercises (such as Kegel exercises) strengthen the bladder muscles, helping to control urine.
