When two countries of the world fight among themselves, the country that burns the most in the fire is the one which is neither a friend nor an enemy. He is just doing his work. During the America-Iran war, India was seen standing in exactly the same situation. Neither were we parties to the war, nor did we attack anyone. But this war has caused serious damage to life and property of India. In the explainer, let us understand what India lost in the Middle East War…

India’s loss that will never be healed

During the US-Iran war, Indian sailors working in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf had to pay a heavy price. These were the people who worked on oil tankers and shipping ships. They neither had anything to do with the war, nor were they part of any army. But when missiles were fired and ships were targeted in the Hormuz area, these sailors were the most vulnerable.

Event

death toll

Attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz

22 Indian sailors died

Deaths due to ship fires and sinking

8 Indian sailors

total indian deaths

30 Indian citizens

These were the people who had boarded foreign ships to feed their families. These sailors from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were never able to return to their homes. The Indian government raised this issue strongly with both Iran and the United States and made diplomatic efforts to bring back the bodies of the deceased.

Those Indian laborers who remained stranded in Gulf countries

As soon as the war started, the lives of millions of Indian migrant laborers living in Gulf countries like UAE, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia were in danger. These people were not directly in the war zone, but when Hormuz was closed and air travel was banned, they were trapped in their homes. Although there were no confirmed reports of large-scale deaths of people from here, the risk to life remained constant. The Indian government evacuated thousands of Indians under ‘Operation Hormuz Safety’.

India’s economy burns in the fire of oil prices

According to the report of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the economic impact of this war on India was at three levels:

1. Rise in oil prices

After the start of the war, the price of crude oil jumped from $ 82 per barrel to more than $ 100 per barrel. India imports 85% of its crude oil needs, a large part of which comes via the Strait of Hormuz. When the Strait of Hormuz was closed, the oil supply was severely affected. According to IFPRI:

area of influence

Estimated damage (IFPRI report)

India’s GDP decline

Reduction from 0.8% to 1.2%

Decline in domestic income

Fall of about 1.5%

Increase in Consumer Price Index (CPI)

Additional inflation from 1.8% to 2.5%

India bore the economic fire of this war to some extent, but it had to pay a price:

India’s crude oil import bill increased by about 25-30% compared to before the war.

Retail prices of petrol and diesel increased by Rs 8-12 per liter.

The price of LPG cylinder increased by Rs 150-200, which directly affected the common kitchen.

India had to buy oil from alternative oil importers like Russia, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, but due to long route and high freight, there was an additional burden of 5-7 dollars per barrel.

Shipping freight alone increased by 40–50%, as ships had to take longer routes to avoid Hormuz.

There was increased pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves, which decreased by about 15-20 billion dollars during the war.

2. Blockage of business routes

The Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) of the National University of Singapore published a paper on the impact of this entire conflict on India. According to:

Area

impact estimation

trade deficit

Expected to increase to 25-30 billion dollars

Current Account Deficit (CAD)

GDP is expected to increase from 1.2% to 2.5%.

foreign exchange reserves

Fall to 20-25 billion dollars

rupee exchange rate

2-3% additional decline against the dollar

3. Global inflation pressure

A research paper published in the International Journal of Economics and Financial Management (IJEFM) examined in depth the impact of this war on India. According to:

Pressure on fiscal deficit: The government had to cut excise duty to provide relief to consumers from rising oil prices. Due to this, there is an estimated reduction of about Rs 1 lakh crore in government revenue.

Fertilizer Crisis and Food Security: India imports 60% of its DAP fertilizer requirement and entire potash. Due to the war, fertilizer prices increased by 66%, which directly affected the cost of Kharif and Rabi crops.

Impact on stock market: A huge fall was seen in Sensex and Nifty amid the fear of war and closure of Hormuz. In a single week, the Sensex had fallen by almost 3,000 points, due to which investors’ wealth worth crores of rupees was wiped out.

Did India pass this test?

According to the report of Times of India, India was successful to some extent in dealing with this crisis. The government increased purchases of cheap oil from Russia and Iraq, used strategic oil reserves and, when necessary, resorted to the dollar-rupee swap mechanism. The report also warns that if the war continues for a long time, combined with El Nino, it could prove to be a double whammy for India.

This war may have been fought thousands of miles away, but its heat reached every home in India. The 30 sailors who could not return to their families are its biggest cost. The economic shocks that hit the pockets of the common man are a reminder that the flames of fire in any corner of the world do not leave anyone untouched in today’s connected era.

Iran has such a weapon that neither a missile nor a nuclear program is needed to operate it. Just one threat and major economies of the world will come to their knees. Iran first threatened the Strait of Hormuz, then targeted it and finally closed it ‘until further orders’ on July 12, 2026. So has Iran made an ‘economic bomb’ that can destroy the entire world’s economy without a nuclear explosion?

Why is the Strait of Hormuz so special?

This is not a common sea route. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the open Indian Ocean. Its width at its narrowest point is only 33 kilometers. The oil passing through this small strip of water is the heartbeat of the world economy. According to reports from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the Congressional Research Service (CRS):

Importance of Hormuz Strait

oil passing every day

total oil flow per day

about 20 million barrels

Share in total world oil consumption

20%

share in world marine oil trade

33% (one-third)

Share in world’s total LNG supply

20%

Apart from this, a large part of the world’s uranium and food grain trade also passes through this route. If this route is closed, not only will the prices of petrol and diesel start skyrocketing across the world, but food items will also become expensive.

What is this ‘economic bomb’?

According to TIME magazine, ‘Controlling the Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s real nuclear option.’ It is being called ‘economic bomb’ because its method of destruction is unique:

Effect without firing: When Iran threatened to close Hormuz for the first time in March 2026, not a single missile was fired. Yet the insurance companies immediately withdrew the insurance cover given to the tankers. As a result, tanker movements fell by 70% and the price of Brent crude oil crossed $100 per barrel for the first time in four years.

Cheaper and faster than a nuclear bomb: It takes decades to build a nuclear bomb and costs billions of dollars. All Iran has to do is threaten to close Hormuz with its navy and missiles and the entire world economy gets shaken.

Losses worth bearing: This is also a kind of ‘suicide bomb’ because if Hormuz is closed, Iran itself is not able to sell its oil. Iran estimates that the harm it will cause to other countries is much greater than its own loss. That’s why he is ready to take this risk.

Who will be hit by the economic bomb?

Foreign affairs expert and retired JNU professor Dr. A. Of. According to Pasha, the closure of Hormuz will affect everyone, but its impact on Asian countries will be no less than an economic earthquake. Asia’s major economies are most dependent on Gulf oil for their energy needs:

1. Biggest blow to China

37.7% of the total oil passing through Hormuz goes to China alone. China fulfills 80% of its total energy needs through this route. If this route remains closed for a long time, China’s factories may come to a standstill and its economy will be deeply hurt.

2. A plate of food is also expensive in India

14.7% of the oil passing through Hormuz comes to India, but India’s helplessness is much greater. India imports 85% of its crude oil and 50% of its LNG requirement. According to the report of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), India’s GDP and domestic income are certain to decline due to the closure of Hormuz. The biggest hit will be on farmers and common families. India imports 60% of DAP fertilizer and the entire potash requirement is also met by imports. The effect of closure of Hormuz will not be limited to petrol pumps only, but will also increase the prices of vegetables, pulses and bread.

3. Industrial shock to Japan and South Korea

10.9% of the oil passing through Hormuz goes to Japan and 12% to South Korea. Both countries import most of their energy and their industries run on oil. The closure of Hormuz would mean slowing down of their factories and increase in inflation.

4. Oil exporting countries also in trouble

The interesting thing is that not only the oil buyers but also the oil sellers will fall prey to this bomb. Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Iraq send their oil out through this route. When Hormuz closed in March 2026, Iraq and Kuwait had to reduce their oil production within a few days because they ran out of space to store oil. On the other hand, countries like America and Russia benefit from expensive oil.

How much will prices rise and how much will growth fall?

Retired JNU professor and economist Dr. Arun Kumar has given three different results:

Estimates of oil prices:

state of war

Average price of oil (in 2026)

If the war ends in April 2026

$82 per barrel

If the war lasts till July 2026

$100 per barrel

If the war continues for a whole year

up to $125 per barrel

According to The Economist, if Hormuz remains closed till the last quarter of the year, then global GDP growth in 2026 will be 1.9%, which is called recession. Whereas in 2027, global GDP growth may be around 1.4%.

The World Bank estimates that due to the closure of Hormuz, the global inflation rate may reach 4% in 2026, which will severely affect the purchasing power of the common people.

What is the situation now after the closure of Hormuz?

By the beginning of July 2026, the situation was such that only about 2 tankers were passing through Hormuz every day, whereas on normal days 60 tankers used to pass. So now:

Relief path: If a diplomatic agreement is reached between America and Iran and Hormuz is opened, then there will be a huge fall in oil prices and the world will heave a sigh of relief.

stop way: Hormuz remained closed, but the scope of the war did not increase. In such a situation, the price of oil may remain between 80-90 dollars per barrel, due to which inflation will increase but the whole world will not be in the grip of recession.

Path of Destruction: Hormuz remains closed and the war spreads on a larger scale. In this situation, oil will cross $100 per barrel and there will be a danger of serious economic crisis and recession from Asia to Europe.

Which trump card does Iran have?

Dr. A. Of. Pasha says, ‘By controlling Hormuz, Iran has actually acquired a weapon with the help of which it can force the world’s major powers to obey its wishes. Iran’s economic bomb has the power to bring the enemies to their knees economically without any major attack. The real question is how America and its allies respond to this unique challenge. How do countries like India and Japan find their way out of this fire?

The US attacked Iranian targets, which included boats trying to lay mines and missile launch sites. He has called it a defensive action.

US Central Command said in a statement that these attacks were carried out to protect our troops from threats posed by the Iranian military. CENTCOM spokesman Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said, ‘US Central Command is protecting its forces by exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire.’

These attacks came at a time when Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqai said that some progress has been made in talks with the US, but no deal to end the fighting is going to happen soon.

Iran did not respond to America’s attacks

According to the New York Times, Captain Hawkins said the target of the attacks was an area near Bandar Abbas, a southern port city and an Iranian naval base located on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s state media had earlier reported that local authorities were investigating after hearing explosions in Bandar Abbas. Iran has not yet responded to the new US attacks. It is not clear what impact these would have on any potential peace deal between the US and Iran.

Trump had said – close to deal

Recently, Donald Trump had said that both the sides are close to a deal, but later he said that he has asked the negotiators not to make the deal in a hurry. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said that an agreement could probably be reached on Monday.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, ‘It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large part of the issues under discussion, but to say that this means that an agreement will be signed soon – no one can make such a claim.’

It is reported that the Memorandum of Understanding being discussed includes plans to extend the ceasefire by 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and further talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

US and Iranian armies have maintained ceasefire since April 8. Iran maintains control over Gulf shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the US Navy has tried to block Iranian ports.

The war in the Middle East is becoming more fierce. US President Donald Trump on Monday (April 6) threatened Iran that if it does not reach an agreement by Tuesday (April 7) night, it will destroy Tehran within four hours. Trump’s ultimatum has increased the heartbeat of the world. At the same time, Tehran has also retaliated against the threats of the US President.

Zulfikari targeted

IRGC spokesperson Ibrahim Zulfikari called Trump’s threats baseless and warned of continuing aggressive action. He said, ‘US President Donald Trump’s ‘vulgar rhetoric’ and arrogance are born out of a stalemate and are aimed at justifying US military failures.

Zulfikari said that ‘these statements will have no impact on the ongoing aggressive and decisive operations against America and Israel and such rhetoric will not be able to compensate for America’s defeat in West Asia. He warned that every step taken by America and Israel will add another defeat to their previous defeats.

Khamenei hit back

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei posted on Telegram and said, ‘Military attacks in Iran and efforts to weaken the army will never succeed. He also made it clear that Iran’s military operations will not be affected by murder and crime in the country.

Trump had threatened

Trump had threatened yesterday (April 6) that if Iran is not ready for an agreement by Tuesday (April 7) night, he will completely destroy Tehran within four hours. Trump said in the press conference, ‘We have a plan, with the help of our army, under which every bridge in Iran will be demolished by 12 o’clock tomorrow (Tuesday) night, every power plant in Iran will be closed, burned, exploded and will never be used again. I mean it will be completely demolished by 12 o’clock, and if we want it will be done within four hours.

Today (April 3) is the 35th day of the Middle East war. Iran has claimed that it shot down an American fighter jet. Although America called Iran a liar. The US-Iran war has reached a fatal point and it does not seem to be stopping at the moment.

Trump (US President Donald Trump) Gave his address to the nation. He said, ‘Operation Fury will continue to protect America. We are continuously registering victories. He said, Iran has been punished for its wrongdoing, it wanted to make a dangerous missile.

Donald Trump’s repeatedly changing stance on the Iran war has created confusion across the world, including America. Iran war (Iran War) But Trump is also facing criticism on social media for his constantly changing stance. Some people are making fun of him by posting under the hashtag ‘Trump Always Chickens Out (Taco)’, that is, Trump withdraws or postpones his decisions due to pressure. US President Trump and his Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said that the war against Iran could end very soon.

Trump had earlier threatened Iran that attacks on Tehran would be intensified if it did not accept the 15-point US proposal. For this, Trump had given time of first 5 days and then 10 days. He has admitted for the first time that American operations in the Middle East have severely weakened the country’s capabilities.

Meanwhile, in an interview given to the Daily Telegraph, Trump said that the US is considering withdrawing from NATO after not helping America in military action against Iran. He described NATO as a paper tiger and said that he had doubted the credibility of NATO for a long time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu) Said that Israel’s campaign against Iran’s regime is not over yet. He claimed that joint operations with America have shaken the roots of the Iranian regime. Netanyahu said, ‘Within a month of joint operation with America, we are crushing the reign of terror which was shouting slogans of ‘Down with America, Down with Israel.’

At the same time, Iran has now declared itself the gatekeeper of the Strait of Hormuz. This means that Tehran will charge a huge amount from any ship passing through this route. Before this, Iran had never used this route to earn money.

Iran-Israel Conflict: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katj has said that Iran will have to refund the uranium enhanced to dangerous levels. This is the same uranium from which atomic bomb is made. Katj clearly stated that a message has been jointly given to Iran by the US and Israel that it will have to hand over its enric uranium.

Iran does not have a nuclear bomb
Katj said in an interview that the attack on Iran recently was aimed at weakening its atomic capacity. He claimed that now Iran has no way left that it can convert uranium into a solid form for atomic bombs, as that transfer facility has also been destroyed.

Israel does not know where is the entire uranium reserves of Iran?
Defense Minister Katj also admitted that Israel is not aware of where Iran has hidden its entire enrich uranium. This has increased the concern that Iran is not secretly preparing its nuclear preparation. According to the Financial Times report, European intelligence experts believe that despite the US attacks on Iran’s main nuclear centers, its enhanced uranium reserves are still largely safe.

The report stated that Fordo saw the movement of trucks before the US attack, which suspects that Iran had already removed uranium from there. European countries also believe that Iran has about 408 kg of high-grade uranium, which is enough to make weapons and recently not present in the Fordo Center.

Israel wanted to kill Khamenei
Israeli’s Defense Minister Israel Katj has made a big disclosure, saying that during the recent struggle with Iran, the Israeli army plan was to kill Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei. However, he also admitted that there was no such opportunity during the war to carry out this scheme.

Was permission from America?
When Katj was asked whether Israel had taken permission from America for such action, he clearly said that in such cases Israel does not need anyone’s permission. He said that the decision to target Khamenei was already taken, but as soon as he hid in a safe bunker, it became difficult to find and action could not be taken.

Us Attacks Iran: When the whole world was sleeping on the night of 22 June, there was a blast in West Asia that shaken the foundation of the entire global system. There was a time when America was seen in the role of ‘mediator’, but now it has gone into this war itself. On the orders of US President Donald Trump, the US targeted the three most important nuclear bases of Iran with ‘bunker buster’ bombs, causing the war to reach a very dangerous turn.

What is ‘Bunker Buster’ weapon
In this attack, the US used a huge ordnance penetrator called GBU-57, which is called ‘Bunker Buster’.

Weight: 30,000 pounds (about 13.6 tonnes)

Length: 20 feet

Why special: This bomb is capable of penetrating bunkers and concrete structures hidden at several hundred feet depth. It can only be taken to B-2 stealth bomber. This bomb is designed to completely destroy inaccessible locations like Fordo.

Attack on three big nuclear bases:
On Saturday night, American bombers bombed Iran’s Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan at three extremely sensitive nuclear bases in Isfahan. Confirming these attacks, President Trump himself wrote on social media that “full payload has been dropped on Fordo. All our aircraft have returned safely.”

Fordo -An extremely enthusiastic uranium enrichment center located below the mountains, which was considered invincible till now.

Natanj – The largest and active uranium enrichment plant in Iran.

Isfahan’s hideout -Where there were reports of bomb-level uranium being stored.

More than 400 deaths, 3,000 injured
Iran’s Health Ministry said that more than 400 civilians have died in the Israeli attacks, including 54 women and children. The number of injured has crossed 3,000. Many missiles have fallen on residential areas, apartments and citizens living normal lives. Also, there is a situation of internet blackout in Iran, due to which the general public’s interaction and association with the world has come to a complete standstill.

Ayatollah Khamenei in danger
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is feeling a serious threat to his life. According to the information, they are constantly changing their hideouts and are in touch with their trusted colleagues instead of communicating directly. Three top commanders of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have also been killed in attacks.

Things in Israel
Iran on Saturday carried out ballistic missiles and drone attacks on Israeli cities like Haifa and Berceva in retaliation. Many buildings collapsed. Golan heights and sirens in northern Israel rings continuously. Cluster bomb was used in Yehuda, which was seen for the first time in this war. However, Israel’s state -of -the -art air defense system was able to destroy most of the attacks in the air. But now the situation is that Israeli’s interceptor missiles are being consumed more than production.

Trump’s revenge stance
Till last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had clearly stated that America is not involved in this war. But Trump’s strategy suddenly changed. Gradually, after the aggressive rhetoric, now the US itself has landed in this fight. Experts say that weapons such as bunker buster are only with the US, and only America is capable of completely destroying bases like Fordo.

Is this the beginning of a global war?
This struggle, which started on June 13, is now gradually taking the form of a global crisis. After America’s military partnership, it is no longer a fight between Israel and Iran. Many Arab countries in West Asia have warned that such attacks can also threaten their border areas. The attack on Iran’s nuclear bases has increased the risk of radioactive leakage in the entire region, which has created a new challenge in front of humanity.
