This tour is being considered a big opportunity to stabilize relations between the two countries, although the environment is a bit complicated due to the Iran war. The Trump administration alleges that China is providing economic support to Tehran by purchasing Iranian oil on a large scale, while China is calling it a matter related to its energy needs. On the other hand, American farmers are also keeping an eye on this visit, because they hope for a strong trade deal. Trump is saying that as soon as the war ends, oil prices will ‘fall like a rock’ and there will be a ‘Golden Age’ for America, but at present the situation remains tense.

• If US-China relations improve too much and there is a major trade reset, India’s strategic value (as China’s counter to the US) may reduce.
• India is also affected by the energy crisis because we import oil. If oil prices increase due to the Hormuz problem, inflation will increase.
• If there is a US-China deal on rare earth minerals and supply chain, then India may also get new opportunities or challenges.
• India wants to take advantage by balancing the US-China tension – neither too much enmity, nor too much friendship.
