The US has imposed a huge tariff of 50% on India, causing a major loss to India’s exporters. According to the report, this decision was not part of any general trade policy but is the result of President Donald Trump’s personal resentment.

The report of the US multinational investment bank and the financial services company Jefferies has claimed that Trump wanted to mediate the India-Pakistan conflict in May. However, India made it clear that it would not accept any third party intervention. This refusal angered Trump and decided to put a huge tariff on India.

Trump wants Nobel Prize!

Trump has claimed many times that he has ended many struggles in the world. The White House had given a statement that Trump should receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In July, Press Secretary Caroline Lewitt had said that the time has come to give the Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump. At the same time, Trump even wrote on Truth social that he can find a thousand years old solution of the Kashmir issue. However, India’s refusal shocked this ambition.

US finance minister told India stubborn

The report said that the US wanted India to open its agricultural sector for imports. India refused to do so to protect the interests of farmers. About 25 crore farmers and laborers in India are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood because 40% of the total workforce is in agriculture. Because of this, US Finance Minister Scott Besant had called India a little stubborn.

India’s response to Trump’s tariff

India said that this move of America is unfair and unfair. India warned that such an attitude could bring it closer to China. Especially because India and China are going to start direct flights after five years from September.

America has implemented a 50 percent tariff on India. This decision has been taken by President Donald Trump under the Executive Order 14329 of 6 August 2025. According to the order, the already existing tariffs on imported goods from India were increased by an additional 25 per cent, due to which the total duty has increased to 50 per cent. The US administration decided to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff because India buys oil from Russia.

According to the ANI report, US National Economic Council Director Kevin Haset has given a big statement on the matter. He said that India is adopting a stubborn attitude in opening its market for American products. This relationship is complex. A part of it is associated with putting pressure on Russia so that there can be peace agreement in the Ukraine conflict. He said that trade talk with India is like a marathon. There will be ups and downs in it. Haset indicated that if India maintains its stance, President Donald Trump can take strict steps.

Russia-Ukraine War related aspect
The US has directly linked the decision to impose an extra 25 per cent tariff to the Russia-Ukraine war. The US wants India to put pressure on Russia and reduce oil imports, but India is continuing oil imports from Russia for its energy security and affordable supply. Due to this, commercial and diplomatic tension between America and India is increasing.

Stress in Indo-US relations
Although the strategic partnership remains between the two countries, the differences over trade and energy policy are seen deepening. The US wants India to open markets for American products. However, India’s attitude is clear that it will give priority to domestic industry and energy security first. Regarding this, PM Modi has also given a statement that he will keep the farmers of the country first. Meanwhile, it is feared that this dispute may also affect FTA (Free Trade Agreement) and Indo-Pacific cooperation in the coming months.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone on Monday (18 August 2025). During the call, he shared information about the meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. The main agenda of Putin and Trump’s meeting was to find out the way to permanently eliminate the Russia-Ukraine war. The President of Russia told PM Modi that this conversation was clear, peaceful and meaningful.

During the telephone call, Prime Minister Modi said about the war that India has always been in favor of a peaceful solution to the Russia-Ukraine struggle and will support every effort even further. PM Modi posted on X (East Twitter) and wrote that my friend thanks President Putin for sharing information about his phone call and his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has constantly called for a peaceful solution to the Ukraine dispute and supports all efforts in this regard. I hope for our continuous exchange in the coming days.

Main things of Putin-Trump meeting
After meeting with Trump on Saturday (16 August 2025), Putin said that he discussed ways to end the war on a fair ground. This meeting was very useful according to the time. Trump also described the meeting as effective, but said that no final agreement has been reached yet. He also pressured Ukraine to accept Russia’s ceasefire conditions.

American tariff and India’s displeasure
A few days before the call, the US announced a new 25% tariff (fine fee) on India. The reason for this was to buy crude oil from Russia at concessional rates of India. On this, Trump alleged that this oil trade is providing financial help to Russia-Ukraine War. However, India strongly opposed this and said that western countries can buy energy at an expensive price, but India needs cheap supply in view of the energy needs of 1.4 billion people. India described this tariff as unfair and irrational.

We will also do not have any party threatening and any number of threats on India, we also repeat the same statement. There is no disagreement. “
