Trump tarifs: The US has imposed an additional 25 percent fee on Indian goods, due to which the total tariff rate has reached 50 percent. However, some Indian goods have been given temporary relief. These goods will not be targeted only when they fulfill certain conditions. For example, if the goods were in a transit before entering the US before (EST) on 27 August 2025 at 12:01 pm (EST), it would not be tariff.

Similarly, if the goods were recorded for consumption before (EST) on 17 September 2025 at 12:01 pm or removed from the warehouse, it would come under the scope of discount. Also, the importer has to prove that the goods are eligible for this exemption and for this the new normal generalized tariff schedule will have to be declared.

Some goods exempted from tariff

Apart from this, some special products are also kept separate from 50 percent tariffs. These include iron and steel, aluminum, copper, passenger vehicles, light trucks and automobile parts.

Rating agency Crisil says that uncertainty over American tariffs can become a major obstacle in the decisions of capital expenditure in FY 2025-26. According to the report, this tariff can affect the notion of Indian corporate investment, even if the financial condition of companies is strong.

Crisil believes that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) can increase the trust of investors, as they create a stable and predetermined commercial environment by reducing fees obstructions. The report also said that the American fees levied on India are much higher than the fees levied on countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam and Indonesia. Challenges such as increasing geopolitical stress, disruption in global supply chain and high costs at the domestic level are preventing the enthusiasm of private investors.

The distance between America and India has increased. US President Donald Trump is not happy with him. Meanwhile, the response of the Trade Advisor Peter Navaro of the White House has come to light. He has once again justified India. Navaro said that the Ukraine war is getting funding due to India. He directly justified India in the matter of buying oil from Russia.

In an article written for ‘The Financial Times’ on Monday (August 18), the Trade Advisor of the White House accused India of converting the banned crude oil into high -value exports and working as a global clearing house for Russian oil.

Navaro said, ,India’s dependence on Russian crude oil is opportunistic and Putin’s war economy is extremely harmful for the world’s efforts to isolate., They said, ,In fact, India works as a global ‘clearing house’ for Russian oil. The restricted crude oil is converted into more tariff exports and gives Russia the dollar according to its need.,

India accused of supporting Russia in war

Navaro said, ,Russia is constantly attacking Ukraine with India’s financial support, so American (and European) taxpayers are being forced to spend billions and billions of dollars and spending to help protect Ukraine. Due to all these reasons, India is closing the doors of American exports through more tariffs and trade barriers.,

America’s false claim – India takes more tariffs

He has said that India imposes the most tariffs in the world on average. Also, it also raises non-tariff barriers. This causes damage to American workers and companies. ” Navaro said, “As a result, America’s trade deficit with India has reached around $ 50 billion annually. And the biggest thing is that India is using dollars obtained from those American trade to buy Russian oil. ”

India termed the US move to impose an additional 25 per cent of altitude on Wednesday (6 August 2025) as unfair and unfortunate. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying that India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests. The Ministry of External Affairs said that other other countries are also purchasing oil from Russia, but America wrongly targeted India. India’s sign was about China and Turki, which buys oil from Russia and no action was taken on it.

‘Other countries are also taking such steps with national interests’

The Ministry of External Affairs said that we have already clarified our position on these issues that our import is based on market factors and is done with the overall objective of ensuring energy security of 1.4 billion people of India. The Ministry of External Affairs said, “This decision is very unfortunate because the US has opted to impose additional fees on India for such steps, which many other countries are also taking up in view of their national interests.”

China is the biggest buyer of Russian oil

The Ministry of External Affairs was a sign of countries like China and Turki, who buy a large amount of crude oil from Russia. According to reports from Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, China bought 47 percent of the total crude oil exports of Russia in June 2025. After this, India is 38 percent, UROPIOI Union (EU) 6 percent and Turki 6 percent. The Turki is the largest buyer of oil products from Russia. It has bought 26 per cent of Russia’s oil product exports. It is 13 percent and Brazil is 12 percent located.

EU, the largest buyer of LNG gas from Russia

The European Union was the largest buyer of LNG gas from Russia. In June 2025, the European Union bought 51 per cent of Russia’s LNG exports, followed by China 21 per cent and Japan 18 per cent. EU was also the largest buyer of Russia’s pipeline gas. Its total exports were bought by EU 37 percent alone, followed by China 30 percent and Turki 27 percent.

According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited the national security and foreign policy as well as trade laws to increase the tariff on India. It said that buying oil from Russia on behalf of India directly and indirectly pose a threat to America.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (5 August 2025) that he would increase the tariff on India in the next 24 hours. Trump again reiterated that India is buying Russian oil and promoting the Russian -war machine. Meanwhile, Nikki Haley of Indian origin, who is in the race of former US Ambassador to the United Nations and presidential candidate, has advised Donald Trump. He said that America should not give exemption to China at all, it only buys the most oil from Russia.

Do not spoil relationships with India- Nikki Haley

Former US Ambassador to UN Nikki Haley posted Trump X and advised Trump not to spoil relations with India. He said, “India should not buy oil from Russia, but China, which is our opponent and is the biggest buyer of Russian-Irani oil, has been relaxed in tariffs for 90 days. Do not discount China and do not spoil your relations with strong colleagues like India.”

Trump again talked about increasing tariffs on India

In an interview to CNBC, American President Trump said that he would increase the tariff on India and amend the rate of 25 percent earlier. He said, “India has the most tariffs. We do very little business with India. We had compromised on 25 percent, but I think I will increase it a lot in the next 24 hours.”

Russia openly came in support of India

Trump had earlier threatened to increase the tariff on India on Monday (4 August 2025), after which Russia openly stood up in India’s support. Russia reacted strongly, calling the US a strategy to create such pressure as illegal. Russian President’s spokesman Dimitri Peskov said, “We know about American threats against India. Russia does not accept such statements.”

Russia said, “Sovereign countries should have the right to choose partners in their business partners, trade and economic cooperation and to choose business and economic cooperation system in the interest of a particular country.”

US President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on India to buy oil from Russia and also threatened to increase it. When the war started between Russia-Ukraine, America wanted India to buy Russian oil. An old statement of former US Ambassador Eric Garcéeti in India is becoming fiercely viral on social media in which he said that we are appreciating New Delhi for buying Russian oil.

The US wanted India to buy oil from Russia

“India bought Russian oil because we bought oil from Russia at a fixed limit price during Biden’s tenure, former US Ambassador to Delhi Eric Garsety said in 2024. Completed the order.

The then American Treasury Secretary supported

At that time, there was a dispute over Eric Garcheti’s statement. Later, the US Finance Department also issued a statement in early 2024 saying that the US has not asked India to stop crude oil imports from Russia. Garcheti is not the only example that supported India’s oil trade with Russia. In the year 2022, the then American Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that Washington is happy that India should continue to buy as much Russian oil as he wants.

In an interview to the news agency Reuters, Janet Yellen said, “When the European Union stops buying Russian oil, it will be very difficult for Russia to continue sending as much oil as they have been doing so far. They will be looking for a lot of buyers and many countries are dependent on Western countries for this.” However, it is now the same America which is claiming India’s Russian oil imports responsible for the Ukraine War.

Why does India buy Russian oil?

India has become the largest sea oil buyer from Russia, which is facing the ban of Western countries due to Ukraine War. Ever since Russia started attacks on Ukraine, many countries doing business with Europe started cutting due to war. With this, Russia got a big market. This has led to a huge change in energy relations, which has saved billions of dollars and also increased the treasures of Moscow.

Between January and June this year, the Indian refiner imported 1.75 million barrels of Russian oil daily, which is one percent more than last year. In 2023, Russia contributed more than 35 percent to India’s total crude oil imports.

Now Trump threatened to increase the tariff

Now Donald Trump has threatened to increase American tariff on goods coming from India for the purchase of Russian oil. Trump said, “India is not only purchasing a huge amount of oil from Russia, but is also earning huge profits by selling a large part of that oil at high prices in the open market. India does not care about how many people are killing Russia’s war machine in Ukraine. That is why I am going to increase the fees paid to America.”

India has given a strong reply to the criticism being made by the US and European Union for oil imports from Russia. Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement on Monday that India started oil imports from Russia after the Ukraine crisis began, as traditional oil supply was diverted to Europe at that time.

‘An example of double standards targeting India’

Randhir Jaiswal said, “At that time the US itself encouraged India to buy oil from Russia so that the global energy market remains stable. This step was national needs for India, but the countries which are criticizing India today, they are trading with Russia themselves. To target India is an example of inappropriate and double parameters.

‘Western countries are doing business with Russia themselves’

Giving data, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the bilateral trade of goods between the European Union and Russia in 2024 was 67.5 billion euros. Apart from this, in 2023, there was a trade of 17.2 billion euros between the two in services. This trade is more than India-Russia trade. In 2024 Europe imported a record 16.5 million tonnes of LNG (LNG) from Russia, which is more than 15.21 million tonnes of the previous record of 2022.

US President Donald Trump’s close and Deputy Chief of the White House accused India of imposing heavy tariffs on American goods and cheating on the US immigration system. He said that India is giving financial help effectively to Moscow in Ukraine war by purchasing oil from Russia.

‘India cheats in immigration policies’

According to a Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, Trump very clearly stated that it is not acceptable for India to fund this war by buying oil from Russia. He said that it is surprising that India is especially associated with China by buying oil from Russia. Stephen Miller alleged that we also know that India is very cheated in immigration policies, which is very harmful for American workers.

‘Great relationship between PM Modi and Trump’

In an interview to Fox News, he said, “President Trump wants a great relationship. He has always been a great relationship with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but we have to think really to deal with the funding of this war (Russia-Ukraine). We have a diplomatic, financial and other ways to teach the war going on in Ukraine so that we can find peace.”

America angry at having better relations with Russia

This statement from the Trump administration came only a few days after imposing 25 percent tariff on Indian exports. The White House has also threatened India to take action on continuing the purchase of oil from Russia. US President Trump targeted India last week for joining BRICS and maintaining better relations with Russia.

Donald Trump said, “I don’t care what India does with Russia.” They can take their dead economy into the trough together, I don’t mind. “He said,” America’s trade deficit with India is very high. India is our friend, but we have done relatively less trade with them in the last several years, because their charges are very high which are the highest in the world. “

US Trump Tariff News: US President Donald Trump has imposed a 26% tariff on Indian goods, but instead of responding to this, the Government of India is focusing on completing the trade agreement with the US as soon as possible.

Trump had said in his order that if the countries which take the right steps to improve the disturbances related to trade, then they can be given some relief. The government is currently expressing confidence in this.

Big claim made in the report

Talking to the Reuters, a government official said that after the US imposing 26% tariff (fee) on Indian goods, India is currently planning to impose any retaliation on America. Instead, India is now focusing on completing the trade agreement with America quickly.

The official also said that the government is relying on the order of Trump, which says that the countries who are trying to balance trade can get some relief from the tariff. This decision of Trump has led to a decline in the world markets as well as India’s stock market. The Sensex fell down 1.6% in just two days.

India is satisfied with this

Another government official told the Reuters that India is satisfied that it is one of the first countries to start a trade agreement with the US. America’s tariff decision has affected many countries in Asia. China has a 34% tariff of 34%, 46% on Vietnam and 32% on Indonesia. China has said in response that it will impose 34% tariffs on all goods coming from America from April 10.

At the same time, Indonesia has made it clear that it will not take any retaliation. Vietnam, which is now becoming a new manufacturing and export center instead of China, has agreed to completely eliminate its tariffs under a possible trade agreement.
